Customising your product listings is an important part of selling on Amazon. Many

sellers don’t take the time to do it and yet it can be hugely beneficial for you and

your customers.

The most important reason to edit your listings is to provide customers with the

information they need to make a purchasing decision. If customers have all the

information they need without having to contact you they are far more likely to make

a purchase.

Editing your listings can also make them much more visible within Amazon’s

marketplace. Adding keywords (and ‘keyphrases’) as well as browse nodes to your

listings can make your products far easier to find by customers and this can have a

positive impact your sales.

In this guide we’ll take you through this process and show you where and how to

edit your listings.

Before we start there are two important points to make regarding your product

listings.

1. If you’re selling a product that has an existing listing on Amazon, the changes

you make to the listing won’t necessarily be accepted. Amazon will consider

the changes you’ve added to the listing and will make a decision on what

information to display to the customer. If you want to make changes to an

existing listing you have to justify to Amazon why you want the changes to be

made.

2. Amazon doesn’t prevent sellers from adding their own keywords and browse-

node descriptions to existing listings – this means there’s no excuse for not

adding them!

Through ProfitSourcery, every product you find in our database has a listing on

Amazon so keep in mind that the changes you make to the listing need to be

justified. Whatever changes you suggest to a listing ultimately have to benefit the

customer.

Editing Your Product Listings

To edit your product listings you need to head to the “Inventory” tab on your Seller

Central page and click the “Manage Inventory” button.

From here you will be taken to a list of the products you have already added to your

inventory.

You can edit your individual listings by clicking the “Edit” button on the right of the

page. You will be able to edit your listing through 6 tabs.

The “Offer” Tab

The “Offer” tab (see below) is the first page you will come to after pressing the

“Edit Details” button. The “Offer” tab is the first tab you are directed to when you

first list your product, so some information should be on the tab. At that time you

would have been required to provide the condition of your products as well as the

selling price.

Additional information can be added or edited such as the quantity of units you’re

selling, a sale price if you wish to discount your products, your handling time (time

between order and dispatch to customer) and the start date of your listing. You can

also change your fulfilment method.

The “Vital Info” Tab

The “Vital Info” tab allows you to edit your product title as well the brand and

manufacturer details. This tab is especially important if you are listing a new product

onto Amazon’s website. It’s very important to get the title right and provide accurate

manufacturer and brand details.

The product title is an essential part of the overall product description. If you are

editing an existing listing a title will already be in place. If you feel that the listing title

is inaccurate, misleading or inappropriate you can contact Amazon to request that

the title is changed.

Alternatively you can enter your own product title within the “Vital Info” tab in the

hope that Amazon uses your information for the listing. Here are three crucial things

you need to include within the title of any product.

1. Exactly what the product is (e.g. laptop, mobile, t-shirt, etc, etc, etc.)

2. The brand (e.g. Fujitsu, Samsung, Nike, etc, etc, etc.)

3. The details that matter most to the customer e.g. the colour, the size, the material

etc. This varies from product to product.

The rest of the information on this tab varies depending on the category the

product is in. You should fill in as much as you can to make sure your product

appears in relevant searches.

The “Images” Tab

This tab is where you can add images for your product. If the listing is already on

Amazon, you cannot change the images here; you can upload your own which will

be considered if the original image is taken down. If the image shown does not

meet any of the image requirements (you can see these in the image below) you

can report this to Amazon through Seller Support and submit your own images for

consideration.

If you are adding images to a new listing you need to follow Amazon’s seller policies

(highlighted below). We highly recommend you use multiple pictures for your listing.

The more images the easier it is for customers to make purchasing decisions.

The “Description” Tab

Through the “Description” tab (see below) you’ll be able to add a product

description and the key product features. It’s important you make use of this tab to

provide the vital information customers need about a product.

The Key Product Features appear as five bullet points below the price information

on a listing. This is the first opportunity beyond the image and title to provide the

customer with more information about the product and convince them to buy.

If you’re editing a current listing the key product features and description will

usually be provided. If you feel these are inadequate or are missing important

information you can provide your own information and ask Amazon to make

changes to the current listing, or if there is no description you can add your own.

If you’re writing the description for a new listing you should include both the product

features and product benefits to the customer. Think about the target audience of

the product and tailor your message to suit them. Here’s our product description

template:

Paragraph 1 - Write a promotional description of your product. What exactly

is it and what is its main function?

Paragraph 2 – Emphasize the key features and their benefits for the

customer.

Paragraph 3 – Provide a product feature that differentiates it from competitor

products, why is the product you sell better? Does it have a better quality

material or a unique feature? Does it come with a manufacturers guarantee?

Your description and key product features should be concise and clear for the

customers.

The “Keywords” Tab

Keywords are best described as common terms for the product you’re selling; these

are likely to be words customers use to find your product. You can edit your listings

keywords in the “Keywords” tab (see below).

The objective of including keywords into your listing is simple; to make your product

more visible to customers. For this reason we highly recommend that you add

keywords to your listing.

Simply write your keyword or ‘keyphrase’ into “Search Terms” (“Platinum-

keywords” are for ‘Platinum’ Amazon merchants only) and when customers type

those into Amazon’s search bar, your product will be shown (alongside products

that have been listed with similar keywords).

Using Amazon’s search bar is a great way to find suitable keywords for your listing

as it helps you understand what customers are searching for. Type your product

into Amazon’s search bar and see what results come up. You can then add these

within your “Search Terms”. In the example below you might wish to add edition,

questions, cards etc. to your keywords.

If you are still struggling to find keywords just think about your potential customers.

Try and relate with them and think about the sort of terms they would type into

Amazon’s search bar to find your product. Take the example of Trivial Pursuit Kids,

you may wish to add family nights in, party, general knowledge and educational to

your search terms.

Somebody might be looking for family activities and if they hadn’t considered board

games or they do not know this game exists they won’t buy it, if it comes up in their

search because of the keywords you have added then there is a chance that they

might.

Do not add unrelated keywords in the hope of appearing in more searches as this

will annoy customers and Amazon will not be very happy with you!

Also note that you do not need to add any words from the product title as these

already count as keywords, you do not need to repeat words e.g. trivia game, board

game. You do not need to write in full sentences, when a customer types a

sentence into the Amazon search bar Amazon will pick out keywords and match

them to your search terms regardless of their order.

The “More Details” Tab

If you have any additional information you would like to provide for your product,

you can do so through the “More Details” tab (see below).

Here you can add product dimensions and weight as well as adding product age

recommendations, the product colour and any hazardous material that can be

found within the product.

If you are creating a new listing and the product you’re selling contains hazardous

material we highly recommend that you inform Amazon. This will ensure that you

don’t break any Amazon seller policies.

The more information you can input here the better, it may be the case that the

person who originally listed the product did not input any information in this tab

and you adding it yourself could prove very useful for potential customers.

For all existing listings it is highly recommended that you edit the ‘Category (item-

type)’ for the product. Editing this browse node ensures your products are found

within the right categories making them easier for customers to find.

When you press the “Edit” button a pop up window will appear (as above), here

you can select the category and subcategories you think apply to your product.

You can only choose one in each column. Think about where you would look if

you wanted to buy the product yourself.

Asking Amazon to Change Listing Information

If the listing you want to use has information on it which is incorrect, misleading or

violates Amazon’s policies you can contact Seller Support. The link to do this can

be found by scrolling to the very bottom of any page on seller central. As you can

see in the image below, to request a change to a product listing you need to select

the “Products and inventory” and select the “Fix a product page” option. You can

then search for the listing you wish to report with an ASIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN, one

of these will be the quickest way to find the listing but you can search by product

name.

Once you’ve found the listing you can select which aspect of the listing you want to

change.

If we select “Product Description” the current description will appear for you to edit

as you see appropriate.

You will need to justify why your changes should be made either with a link to an

authoritative website which shows your information to be accurate, with an image of

the product itself or you can select other, this will usually be used if the current

description breaks Amazon’s rules.

Amazon will review your suggestions and will contact you if they need further

information. If your suggestions are accepted by Amazon they will change the listing

with the information you provided.
