entertaining engaging visually appealing
Objective:
-
Our goal for this project was to create an adventure for entire family by making the map entertaining, engaging and visually appealing to children primarily as well as adults.
-
We made it something that could be a keep sake for years, while encouraging the kids to explore and learn about the sculptures.
-
Heres our strategy: Print everything on a neckerchief, reminiscent of scout neckerchiefs. As a keep sake, fabric lasts longer. Crinkles and smudges arent deal breakers when you can put something in the wash.
This is what the neckerchief looks like folded up for its first presentation.

The color pallet has bright points and neutral tones to help with navigation as well as appeal to kids and feel fresh to parents used to kid targeted products.
Here, you are introduced to the characters of our map. If you want to run around and ignore them, it doesnt hurt your experience. If you want to sit down and really study it, you can get some fun out of them.

This is what the map looks like completely unfolded.
To get kids exploring with their families, weve designed a sculpture challenge. When handed the neckerchief, each family is given the challenge to go to each of the marked sculptures. When they arrive, kids and adults can make a drawing of the sculpture (abstract references such as elmo are acceptable). They receive a stamp on their neckerchiefs as prizes. This process gives a personal connection to way finding.

This allowed us to be more clear about the placement of the Haas sculptures as well as giving people a bit more of a clue which sculpture was where.

The last thing we did was add the date and time of the event to all the printed material. Yes, guests had to know what day it was to get there and receive a copy of the map, but a user pointed out during testing that they might not know the end time. This also brought back echoes of concert poster making for the Folly. During that project we learned that a keepsake is a connection to the memory of that place and time, so marking it with that place and time can only help.

We also experienced a lot of personal growth during this project. Working together, we keep each other on schedule, as well as keeping each others spirits up. Happiness and timelyness seam to be very important to each other.
We also made sure to keep up communications. Every day we would take a walk, throw out stress and ideas about other things we have to do, get map plans on the mind and get in the zone. Each walk resulted in a detailed to do list. This was the most important part of both feeling productive and being productive.
