The raid made tothe warehouse located at JalanTrenggana No. 114, Denpasar, lastWednesday (Sep 15) afternoon, did not only reveal the illegal busi-ness of refilling the subsidizedLPG, but would also reveal an-other case, namely motortheft.

It was discernible from the evi-dence found at the scene. In addi-tion to hundreds of LPG canistersalong with other equipment, po-lice also found dozens of motor-cycle wreckages in the warehouse.Allegedly, those wreckages werethe result of crime. “There are 20motorcycle wreckages found at thescene. Unit III of police detective for special crimes (Tipiter), Directorate of Criminal Investigation,Bali Police led by IB Megeng managed to disclose an illegal business operated by Nyoman Sukantaand Nengah Subagia. The two men were known to have been proven to illegally refill the subsi-dized LPG from 3 kilogram into 12 kilogram canister. The illegal refilling warehouse was finallyraided by troops of mobile detective of Bali Police, last Wednesday (Sep 15) afternoon.

in truth the Bali Police had sus-pected the scene since three daysago. Based on information gath-ered from the public, the ware-house was used for illegal LPG re-filling business. “Police had madesurveillance for three days. Afterthe investigation categorized to beA 1 (definite), police then raid thescene,” he explained.

As soon as the police enteredthe warehouse, two employees(Sukanta and Subagia—ed) wasencountered to be ‘injecting’ thecanister of 3 kg size. Accordingto the officers, such injection wasintended to remove the gas fromcanister of 3-kg into 12 kg. “Aswe entered, the two employeeswere distraught. They were fi-nally secured and interrogated onthe spot,” said the officer whileasking not to mention his nameon the newspaper.

Well, the police then performeda search and found 200 gas canis-ters sizing 3 kg and 12 units of can-ister sizing 12 kg. Both types ofcanister remained to contain fullgas. Allegedly, the canisters wouldbe refilled and then sold in thecommunity. “There are also someother evidence secured by police. They had been brought to BaliPolice for further process,” headded.

Spokesperson of Bali Police,Gde Sugianyar, stated that his partyremained to deepen the refillingcase of the subsidized LPG. Twoemployees found to inject the can-ister on the scene were still under-going an intensive investigation.“We are still investigating the caseand pursuing the existence of Eka,”said former Chief of BalikpapanPolice at the headquarters of BaliPolice last Wednesday. of them were found to have licenseplate of outside Bali. Even, there werelicense plates of Java and Lampungand other regions. It was unknownwho the owner of those evidenceswas and police stayed to perform thetracking. “Such evidences are stillkept in the warehouse. Police havesealed the warehouse by installingpolice lines. Surely, police would beable to trace the discovery of suspi-cious evidence,” he explained.

Spokesperson of Bali Police,Gde Sugianyar, when asked for hisconfirmation last Wednesday con-firmed that his party found a doz-ens of motorcycle wreckages in thewarehouse touted to belong to Eka.Condition of those evidences wasnot intact and alleged to have beenstripped down by the perpetrators.“Police investigators were still in-vestigating the evidence findings. No suspects are secured up to thistime,” he told journalists lastWednesday. an area hospital, he said.He added that the announce-

ment has actually been taped toban smoking in all rooms and stra-tegic locations in the largest hos-pital on the island of Bali. Sincethe ban was not accompanied bysanctions, then the bulletin boardthat was not unlike like the tigertoothless alias ignored by thesmoker. Creating special smokingareas in addition to great expense, will also take the room that shouldbe utilized for patient rooms orspaces other supporting facilities. If this is enforced for the procure-ment of the area or space forsmokers, there is a place that mustbe sacrificed for the suckers thatnicotine, he criticized.

As reported earlier, the Headof Public Relations DivisionSanglah Hospital, dr. IGN A PutraWibawa complained today manyvisitors who smoke around thehospital area. In fact, the sign wastaped to ban smoking everywhere. This shows awareness of the visi-tors still less to keep the hospitalarea free from pollution smokerssmoke. The defendants, now frail octo-genarians, deny any guilt for theirroles in the radical communist ruleduring which about a quarter ofCambodia’s population died due tostarvation, overwork or execution.

The trial, due to start by mid-2011, will bring to the stand NuonChea, 84, the group’s ideologist;former head of state and public faceof the regime, Khieu Samphan, 79;former Foreign Minister Ieng Sary;and his wife Ieng Thirith, ex-min-ister for social affairs, both in their80s.

Each face four charges: crimesagainst humanity, genocide, warcrimes and a combined charge ofmurder, torture and religious per-secution, co-investigating judgeYou Bunleng told a news confer-ence.

The indictments follow the con-viction in July of the regime’s chiefjailer, Kaing Guek Eav, also knownas Duch, on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity, tortureand murder. He was sentenced toserve 19 years in prison — a termcriticized by many Cambodians astoo lenient.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Cambodia’s U.N.-backed genocide tri-bunal has indicted the four top surviving leaders of the Khmer Rougeregime blamed for 1.7 million deaths in the 1970s, paving the way forthe panel’s long-awaited second trial next year.

prison where as many as 16,000people were tortured before beingexecuted.

While Duch’s trial was assistedby his cooperation with the tribu-nal and the meticulous record-keeping of S-21, marshaling evi-dence against the Khmer Rougechiefs, could prove more compli-cated. Their trial will also likely bemore politically sensitive becausesome current Cambodian leaderswere once lower-level KhmerRouge cadre themselves.

The devastation to Cambodiacaused by the shadowy regime’sradical policies during its 1975-79is beyond doubt. Towns and citieswere depopulated in a disastrousagrarian experiment that shunnedtechnology and persecuted thenation’s educated classes. Per-ceived opponents of the regime, even within its own ranks, wereruthlessly purged. But the opaquenature of the regime’s workingsmay make it harder to establishcomplicity of the accused.

“Given the magnitude of thecrimes committed under the Demo-cratic Kampuchea regime” the newcase would focus on “a specific se-lection of sites and criminal activi-ties,” the tribunal said in a state-

ment.Several other major Khmer

Rouge figures have died, includ-ing the supreme leader, Pol Pot, in1998 — a factor that only adds tothe pressure on the tribunal to ex-pedite proceedings against the fourindicted Thursday. You Bunlengsaid the four have been interviewedby investigating judges 46 timessince being detained at the tribu-nal in 2007.

Their case file also extends toover 350,000 pages that include11,600 documents, more than1,000 written records of interviewswith witnesses and civil parties.

None of the four defendants hasshown any sign they may breakranks or speak openly, and someexperts said Duch’s relatively lightsentence could be an incentive for

him to testify. The judges presiding over

Duch’s case said they took into con-sideration the historical context ofthe Khmer Rouge atrocities: The re-gime — which took power as thewar in neighboring Vietnam wasending and in the wake of massiveU.S. bombing of Cambodia — wasthe product of the Cold War times.

They also recognized that Duch— unlike any of the others in de-tention — was not in the KhmerRouge’s inner circle, had cooper-ated with the court and shown ex-pressions of remorse, however“limited.”

But they flatly rejected Duch’sclaims that he merely was acting onorders from the top or that he wasa “cog in the machine” who couldnot get out. Prosecutors are appeal-

ing for a longer sentence him, whileDuch has filed his own appeal, seek-ing acquittal for what he says werelegal errors made by the tribunal.

Though the tribunal — more than10 years and $100 million in themaking — has been credited withhelping the traumatized nationspeak out publicly for the first timeabout atrocities committed threedecades ago, it has been criticizedas well.

The government insisted Cambo-dians be on the panel of judges, opening the door for possible inter-ference by current leaders — in-cluding the prime minister — whowere once low-level members of theKhmer Rouge. It also sought to limitthe number of suspects being tried— rather, some say, than implicateits own ranks.

Mideast peace talks rich in symbolismholy city of Jerusalem in a series ofcarefully choreographed meetingsrich in symbolism.

In Middle East peacemaking, symbolism is often just as importantas substance. Each venue in the re-cently renewed talks, the first in

nearly two years, has been carefullychosen — a set of gestures meantto send important messages to keyconstituencies.

Launched on the lawn of theWhite House on Sept. 2, the peaceefforts moved this week to theEgyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh,the Israeli prime minister’s officialresidence in Jerusalem, the WestBank and then to Jordan.

Obama has made Mideast peacea top priority in his foreign policy.Bringing the sides together at theWhite House after months of pains-taking mediation underscored thepersonal commitment of the U.S.president to the peace process whilegiving him an important boostahead of key midterm elections.

The high-profile stage of theWhite House also provided a bumpto Israeli Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu and Palestinian Presi-dent Mahmoud Abbas. It helpedNetanyahu — widely seen as ahard-liner by the international com-munity — portray himself as apeacemaker, and aided the em-battled Abbas in shoring up his po-sition at home. But it was impor-tant to shift the talks quickly backto the Middle East.

All sides agreed to launch thelatest round of negotiations in Egypt

— a nod to the first Arab country toreach peace with Israel and a keymoderating force in the region.Sharm el-Sheikh, a frequent site ofMideast summits, was a naturalchoice.

The summit at the Red Sea re-sort town, which was anchored bySecretary of State Hillary RodhamClinton, was a clear sign of appre-ciation for Egypt’s 82-year-oldleader, Hosni Mubarak, and gaveAbbas an important “Arab” endorse-ment at a time when he has comeunder criticism for returning to thenegotiating table.

“We appreciate very much therole of Egypt, the leader of the Arabworld, in supporting the process ofIsraeli-Palestinian reconciliation,”said Mark Regev, a spokesman forIsraeli Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu. “Their providing avenue was a very tangible way ofexpressing support.”

On Wednesday, the talks movedto Jerusalem — the epicenter of theconflict and potentially the thorni-est stop on Clinton’s sweep throughthe Middle East.

“This is a city that holds suchdeep meaning for Jews, Christiansand Muslims,” Clinton noted duringan appearance with Israel’s presi-dent, Shimon Peres.

Israel claims the entire city as itscapital, while the Palestinians seekeast Jerusalem, which Israel capturedin the 1967 Mideast war, as the capi-tal of a future independent state. Theeastern sector is home to key Jew-ish, Christian and Muslim holy sites.

The main event of the day — ameeting between Clinton,Netanyahu and Abbas — took placeat Netanyahu’s official residence. While the Israeli and Palestinianleaders warily shook hands, eachtook pains to put the other at ease.

Netanyahu, who only a year agoendorsed the idea of creating a Pal-estinian state, made sure to place aPalestinian flag alongside U.S. andIsraeli flags at a joint appearancebefore their meeting — following acustom begun by his predecessor,Ehud Olmert. Abbas, who paid manyvisits to Jerusalem for peace talkswith Olmert, left a conciliatory notein the residence’s guest book.

“Today I returned to this houseafter a long period of absence in or-der to continue talks and negotiationsand with the hope of reaching eter-nal peace in the entire region andespecially peace between Israel andthe Palestinian people,” he wrote.U.S. State Department spokesmanP.J. Crowley said such interactionswere valuable.

CANCUN, Mexico – Tropical Storm Karl dumped heavy rains on the Yucatan Peninsula onThursday as it moved toward the Gulf of Mexico, where it is expected to pick up steam and be-come a hurricane threatening Mexico’s central coast by the weekend.

Violeta Pineda, who has oper-ated thatch-roof bungalows knownas the Hotel Kabah Na for 13 years, said waves were rolling about 25yards (meters) onto the beach andeating away at a stretch of road thatruns along the coast. “There is a lotof wind,” said Pineda, whose hotelis about 5 miles (8 kilometers)south of Majahual.

Electricity went out brieflyaround Majahual. But the towntook an almost-direct hit from Cat-egory 5 Hurricane Dean in 2007 —the third most powerful Atlantichurricane ever to hit land — and“this is nothing in comparison,”said Pineda.

Karl’s center passed close to thestate capital, where there were re-ports of heavy rain and wind, downed trees and power outages. The storm then moved inland overtiny rural hamlets and its winds de-clined to about 40 mph (65 kph).

It is expected to move back overwater and into the Gulf of Mexico

on Thursday. Assistant state Pub-lic Safety Secretary DidierVazquez said security forces hadtaken some people from coastaltowns to shelters, while others pre-ferred to ride out the storm in theirhomes.

The storm threw doubt over thearea’s celebration of Mexico’s bi-centennial anniversary of indepen-dence from Spain, although therewas no immediate decision to can-cel festivities.

But Mexico issued a tropicalstorm watch for the west coast ofthe Yucatan peninsula — where thestorm is expected to re-enter theGulf — from Ciudad del Carmennorth to Celestun.

On the other side of the Atlan-tic, Julia briefly intensified into apowerful Category 4 storm earlyWednesday before weakening to aCategory 3 with sustained winds ofnear 115 mph (185 kph.) AndIgor’s top winds also lost steam to135 mph (215 kph).

Even tough the number of tour-ists is decreasing but it did affect thediving activities on the beach. “Div-ing can not be limited by time. Thetourists want to dive at any givenmoment especially on the sunnyday,” Suta said.

He added that the tourists whodive in Amed are usually brought bytravel agent from Sanur, Nusa Dua,or Denpasar. “Some of them choose

MUMBAI - India’s central bankraised its main interest rates morethan expected on Thursday, spring-ing the fifth hike in six months totame inflation in Asia’s third-biggesteconomy.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)raised its main repo rate — the rate atwhich it lends to commercial banks —by 25 basis points to 6.0 percent, amove that was in line with analysts’forecasts.

But it hiked the reverse repo rate —the rate it pays to banks for deposits —more aggressively than forecast, in-creasing it by 50 basis points to 5.0percent.

“Inflation remains the dominantconcern in macroeconomic manage-ment,” the bank said in a statement.

Inflation dipped to a seven-monthlow in August, but is still seen as too

“The appreciation of the renminbicannot solve the US trade deficit againstChina and it cannot solve the US do-mestic unemployment issue,” foreignministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu toldreporters.

“The issues in China and US eco-nomic relations and trade should beproperly solved through consultationson an equal footing. Exerting pressurecannot solve the issue. Rather, it maylead to the contrary.”

The People’s Bank of China onThursday set the central parity rate —the middle of the yuan’s allowed trad-ing band — at 6.7181 to the dollar, thestrongest level since Beijing in Junepledged to let the yuan trade morefreely.

It was trading at 6.7335 at the dollarlater in the day, according to Dow JonesNewswires. The yuan can move up ordown 0.5 percent from the central par-ity rate in any given trading day.

The currency has appreciated 1.6percent since the summer promise andgained 0.7 percent over the course ofthis week as US lawmakers readied forhearings on the sensitive issue.

WASHINGTON - Trade tensionsbetween the United States and Chinaratcheted up another notch Wednes-day, as Washington called on the WTOto probe unfair Chinese trade prac-tices.

The United States asked the WorldTrade Organization to investigateChina’s allegedly unfair treatment ofUS steel and electronic payment pro-viders, the first step toward sanctions.

“We are concerned that China isbreaking its trade commitments to theUnited States and other WTO part-ners,” US trade representative RonKirk said in a statement.

Amid mounting US anger aboutChina’s trade policies, Kirk’s officesaid it would ask the WTO for “con-sultations” about Beijing’s policies, astep that could lead to retaliatory mea-sures.

US authorities said China slapsunfair duties on US electrical steel andhas not opened up its market in elec-tronic payments.

Beijing claims that US steel hadbeen dumped onto the Chinese mar-ket and is subsidized.

The announcement comes on theeve of what is expected to be an acri-monious appearance by Treasury Sec-retary Timothy Geithner before the USCongress.

Facing November elections shapedby voter anger at the sour economy,US lawmakers will grill Geithner onwhat they charge are China’s unfairpolicies.

BEIJING - China on Thursday warned outside pressure on Beijing to change its currencyregime would not work, as US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner prepared to address law-makers angry over the yuan’s value.

China has a history of allowing theyuan to strengthen slightly ahead ofevents at which it expects to come un-der heightened pressure over the valueof the currency, which Congressionalcritics say is grossly undervalued.

Geithner, who will testify beforeboth House and Senate lawmakers onThursday, told the Wall Street Journallast Friday that Beijing had done “verylittle” since vowing to loosen its gripon the currency.

When asked whether he was satis-fied with China’s progress on the is-sue, Geithner replied: “Of course not.”

World Bank president RobertZoellick threw his support behind callsfor a strengthening of the yuan onWednesday, telling reporters in Beijingthat it would be “appropriate to havean appreciation of the currency.”

China made the June pledge follow-ing intense pressure from the UnitedStates, Europe and other trading part-ners for a stronger currency. The yuanhad until then been effectively peggedat about 6.8 to the dollar since 2008.

Critics, led by US lawmakers, thinkthe yuan is undervalued by as much as

40 percent, giving Chinese exportersan unfair price advantage and floodingthe American market with cheap Chi-nese goods — but Beijing has repeat-edly refuted those allegations.

The US trade deficit with China fellslightly to 25.92 billion dollars in Julyfrom 26.15 billion dollars in June, theUS Department of Commerce said lastweek.

China said Friday its trade surplusunexpectedly shrank in August to 20.03billion dollars as imports accelerated— which analysts said would bolsterBeijing’s arguments for a limited ap-preciation of the yuan against the dol-lar.

Jiang’s comments came after theUnited States ratcheted up trade ten-sions with Beijing, asking the WorldTrade Organisation to investigateChina’s allegedly unfair treatment ofUS steel and electronic payment pro-viders, the first step toward sanctions.

“We are concerned that China isbreaking its trade commitments to theUnited States and other WTO partners,”US trade representative Ron Kirk saidin a statement.

India’s central bankhikes interest rates

high.“Though inflation rates have reached

a plateau, they are likely to remain atunacceptably high levels for somemonths,” the bank added.

The measures undertaken should helpcontain inflation without disrupting thecountry’s economic growth, the banksaid.

The wholesale price index — thegovernment’s preferred main inflationindicator — dropped to 8.51 percentyear-on-year in August, from 9.78 per-cent the previous month, official figuresshowed.

India’s Congress-led government hasbeen under intense pressure over highprices that have made life even more dif-ficult for the country’s hundreds of mil-lions of poor.

Food inflation is still contributing toinflation pressures, but about two-thirdsof inflation in August can be attributedto items beyond food, the statement said.

US takes two Chinatrade cases to WTO

bills to impose retaliatory measuresagainst Chinese goods amid accusationsthat Beijing keeps its currency — andthereby its exports — artificially cheap.

The White House’s Democratic al-lies have expressed frustration with bothChina and US President BarackObama’s administration, and warnedthat lawmakers may be forced to actunless Washington wrings some con-cessions from Beijing.

The administration will hopeWednesday’s announcement takessome of the sting out of what could be-come a damaging trade war betweentwo of the world’s largest economies.

“These two cases are critical stepsforward in our effort to enforce ourmarket access rights in China,” saidDemocratic Senator Max Baucus.

Kirk meanwhile echoed complaintscommonly heard on Capitol Hill.

“The duties imposed by China haveraised the price of hundreds of millionsof dollars’ worth of American steelheaded into China, with the practicaleffect of reducing or blocking exportsof our steel to that country. China mustnot abuse WTO procedures to protectits market,” said Kirk.

“This case makes clear that theUnited States will not permit China tothreaten American steelworkers’ jobs byusing anti-dumping and countervailingduty proceedings to harass US exports.”

The US announcement also comesafter the United Steelworkers unionasked US authorities to investigate Chi-nese subsidies to the green energy sec-tor.

US officials denied that the timingof the announcement was politicallymotivated.

WASHINGTON - Arctic sea icemelted over the summer to cover thethird smallest area on record, US re-searchers said Wednesday, warningglobal warming could leave the re-gion ice free in the month of Sep-tember 2030. Last week, at the endof the spring and summer “melt sea-son” in the Arctic, sea ice covered4.76 million square kilometers (1.84million square miles), the Univer-sity of Colorado’s National Snowand Ice Data Center said in an an-nual report.

“This is only the third time in thesatellite record that ice extent hasfallen below five million square ki-lometers (1.93 million squaremiles), and all those occurrenceshave been within the past fouryears,” the report said.

A separate report by the NationalOceanic and Atmospheric Admin-istration (NOAA) found that in Au-gust, too, Arctic sea ice coveragewas down sharply, covering an av-erage of six million square kilome-ters (2.3 million square miles), or22 percent below the average extentfrom 1979 to 2000.

The August coverage was thesecond lowest for Arctic sea icesince records began in 1979. Only2007 saw a smaller area of thenorthern sea covered in ice in Au-gust, NOAA said.

SAO PAULO - Graffiti’s longstruggle to be seen as valid urbanexpression, not vandalism, is be-ing crowned this month with an ex-hibition in Brazil by internationalartists who not only sprayed offi-cial works but also spruced upabandoned corners of Sao Paulo.

A raid on a dilapidated factory bymany of the 66 artists on the eve ofthe event’s opening was a celebrationof the roots of graffiti, which emergedfour decades ago from New York’ssubway system. It was also a trium-phal declaration that, at last, they be-lieve they have reached legitimacy ascontemporary artists, a status en-hanced by their provocative legacy.

“Maybe that’s why it’s an artform. Because after 40 years start-ing in New York and everything, itstill gets people upset. And it is stillgetting people to think, and it’s stillmaking people happy. It stillmakes people talk,” said one of theartists, Anders Rebentlovlarsen, a25-year-old Dane.

He and the others — aroundhalf of them Brazilian, half for-eigners from the United States,Europe and Japan — are showcas-ing more official works in a firstBiennial of Graffiti Fine Art at SaoPaulo’s Brazilian Museum ofSculpture through October 3.

The designs, which range froma car decked with seductive eyes, though to a Manga-looking girlholding court in front of sinisterdolls, a Frankenstein-like headpierced with oversized nails, or anabstract bird’s nest of strokes andwords, reveal the derivations andreinventions of graffiti as it hasspread around the world.

bring you a special emotion orsomething that you are like ‘Wow,this person is so talented.’ That’sart, and that’s graffiti fine art,”Andrea Luis Carvalho, one of theexhibit’s organizers, told AFP.

Rebentlovlarsen, who regularlyreceives commissions for graffiticommercial projects in his nativeCopenhagen, said graffiti’s para-dox is that “you’re destroyingsomething but you’re actually cre-ating something.”

“I can say this is an art formbecause there’s a lot of colors forexample, or a lot of people doingit, or it’s all around the world, mak-ing many people happy. But it’salso making a lot of people veryangry and nervous, and so that’sthe clinch,” he said.

“I think that’s why I find it in-teresting. Because why is it somepeople can’t see the quality insome non-grey wall for example?”

The curators of the show saidthey saw Sao Paulo as a natural en-vironment for the works becauseof the city’s boast that it is the NewYork City of South America, withits melting-pot population, ebul-lient underground art scene anddizzying, vast landscape of sky-scrapers and industrial zones.

Sao Paulo, they claim, is “the cur-rent worldwide mecca of graffiti”thanks to those factors — and theblind eye police usually show to graf-fiti artists whose “vandalism” is con-sidered irrelevant alongside the ram-pant street crime that poses a muchmore serious threat to the public.

Rafael Calazans Pierre, a 32-year-old Brazilian industrial artistwhose sideline passion for paint-ing walls with interwoven wavesand swirls was on show at the mu-seum, said he could not begin tocount how many graffiti artistswere active in Sao Paulo.

Arctic sea ice shrinks to third lowest area on recordcover at the end of the spring andsummer “melt season” in September, was also in 2007, when ice coveredjust 4.13 million square kilometers(1.595 million square miles).

Mark Serreze, director of theNSIDC, said climate-change skep-tics might seize the fact that Arcticsea ice did not hit a record-low ex-tent this year, but said they wouldbe barking up the wrong tree if theyclaimed the shrinkage had beenstopped.

“Only the third lowest? It didn’tset a new record? Well, right. It didn’tset a new record but we’re stillheaded down. We’re not looking atany kind of recovery here,” he toldAFP.

In fact, Serreze said, Arctic sea icecover is shrinking year-round, withmore ice melting in the spring andsummer months and less ice form-ing in the fall and winter. “The Arc-tic, like the globe as a whole, iswarming up and warming up

quickly, and we’re starting to see thesea ice respond to that. Really, in allmonths, the sea ice cover is shrink-ing — there’s an overall downwardtrend,” Serreze told AFP.

“The extent of Arctic ice is drop-ping at something like 11 percent perdecade — very quickly, in otherwords. “Our thinking is that by 2030or so, if you went out to the Arcticon the first of September, you prob-ably won’t see any ice at all. It willlook like a blue ocean, we’re losingit that quickly,” he said.

Losing sea ice cover in the Arcticwould affect everything from theobvious, such as people who live inthe far north and polar bears, to glo-bal weather patterns, said Serreze.

“The Arctic acts as a sort of re-frigerator of the northern hemi-sphere. As we lose the ice cover, westart to change the nature of that re-frigerator, and what happens up thereaffects what happens down here inthe middle latitudes,” he said.

The United States, meanwhile,

can boast a record 32 Davis Cuptitles but that legacy will count fornothing if they lose to Colombiain Bogota in one of eight play-offs. Defeat would send them outof the elite World Group for thefirst time since 1988.

“I would like to have a great race and dedicate it to Tomizawa,”said Yamaha rider Lorenzo. Tomizawa’s funeral took place on Wednes-day in Asahi, Chiba, where over a thousand mourners paid their re-spects. Fellow Japanese world championship riders Yuki Takahashiand Tomoyoshi Koyama were amongst those present, as wasTechnomag-CIP team boss Alain Bronec.

The death of 19-year-old Tomizawa has cast a cloud over Sunday’srace, named as a replacement for the Hungarian Grand Prix, whichlost its slot on the 2010 calendar when work on the country’s pro-posed circuit fell behind schedule.

Lorenzo has a 63-point advantage over rival Dani Pedrosa in thestandings although his fellow Spaniard has won the last two races, atIndianapolis and San Marino.

“It’s our third race in Spain but the first time at Aragon and I’mexcited,” said 23-year-old Lorenzo, who has won at Jerez andCatalunya on home soil in 2010.

Pedrosa is aiming for a fourth win of the season and has reignitedhis title challenge with back-to-back victories in his last two outings.

Although he is 63 points behind Lorenzo, there are still 150 to ridefor in the remaining six races. “It’s always very nice to race in Spainand I can imagine that the atmosphere will be incredible; I’m lookingforward to meeting the Spanish fans again,” said Pedrosa, who wassecond to Lorenzo at Jerez and Catalunya.

“The team and I also arrive in a very good mood thanks to the greatjob we have been doing and our good results in the last races.

“Our bike has been working well at very different circuits, so Ihope we can also do a good job. I’m really looking forward to thisGrand Prix.”

JENSON Button is convincedthis year’s championship fight willgo down to the wire judging by howtight the battle at the top is. RedBull’s Mark Webber is leading thestandings, five points ahead ofLewis Hamilton and 19 in front ofFernando Alonso. Button sits justone point behind the Spaniard, withSebastian Vettel two points adrift ofthe Briton with five races left.

The reigning world champion, who finished in second behindAlonso at Monza last Sunday, ad-mitted he finds it hard to believehow close this season has been.

He also conceded the result inItaly was a boost for his champion-ship hopes, despite losing out toAlonso. “Absolutely, because I tookthe opportunity with both hands, and I scored 18 points on a daywhen Lewis scored none, Mark tookhome eight and Sebastian 12,” saidButton on his website.

“Now, you can’t help but look atthe drivers’ championship table andjust think, ‘wow, how can it be soclose?’ It’s funny - after Spa, every-one was saying it was a two-horserace between Lewis and Mark, butI can easily see this championshipgoing right down to the last race.

“I think we’ve seen that no onedriver’s going to walk away with theworld title - there’s going to be afight right to the very end.”

Button says consistency will bekey to take this year’s title, but he

reckons there are times when a driversimply has to push hard and go forvictory. He believes the experiencefrom last year will be useful to himin the final races.

“I think you have to take each raceas it comes,” he said. “I think thatdriving just to score a certain num-ber of points isn’t in a racing driver’spsyche: I felt that a little bit last year,I knew I only had to keep scoringconsistently to take the title, but thatwas probably more mentally taxingthan just putting your head down andgoing for it.

“For instance, at Interlagos lastyear, I had nothing to really lose - Iwas 14th on the grid and my team-mate was on pole. What did I have to

gain by driving steadily and takinghome a handful of points? I just wentfor it, and that was a really liberat-ing race for me, and an experiencethat will be useful this year too.

“I think consistency is importantin some ways though: obviously, you need a car that will get you tothe finish of every grand prix, andyou don’t want to start makingknee-jerk, or radical, decisions onset-up or strategy because you thinkit might give you an advantage.

“We’re racers, so we’ll always beracing - but the pressure’s now onall of us, because none of us canafford another non-finish or a mis-take. And the guy who cracks leastwill be world champion.”
