What is an aquifer?
• Any layer of rock or sediment with spaces that hold water, and through which significant quantities of water can move
• Ex.– Sand and gravel layers– Fracture systems in brittle rocks– Cavities in easily dissolved rock, such as limestone
What is groundwater?
• Water contained in aquifer• Used for drinking, recreation, industry, and
growing crops• Obtained by digging wells
Confining Layer
• Geologic material with little or no permeability
• Water does not pass through this layer or at a rate of movement is extremely slow
