I can’t remember if I was reading an article about the size of the universe or watching one of the many scientific space shows my husband tortures me with but apparently, the universe is a

quadrillion times the size of anything we can imagine. One source says that if a galaxy like the Milky Way was the size of a pea, the universe is the size of

an auditorium filled with those peas, which I can’t even begin to

fathom.

After hours of alien debate and racking my brain about trying to grasp how ridiculously vast the universe is I thought about looking at this possibility in a different light. I am reluctantly going to go ahead and say that maybe we can’t possibly be that special. We can’t possibly be the only planet in the sea of peas that happens to have creatures on it. But of course I am going to look at this at the amusing way I look at life and change the focus of the scientific debate. I would like to shift it away from asking “is there life on other planets?” and raise a new, more interesting question: “If there are aliens zipping around out there in the universe, is their world as painfully annoying as ours is?”

For example, are there aliens somewhere out there who have to get up for work on a rainy Monday morning and start their countdown to Friday? Do they sit in spaceship traffic for an hour, or ride a miserable alien shuttle bus to a city full of annoying aliens?

Do they get stuck sitting next to another alien who won’t stop talking? Or who is smelly, obnoxious and or rude?

Do alien sit in a windowless cubicle and spend their days wishing they were somewhere else? Do they daydream about their summer vacation on earth?

Do they count down the minutes to the weekend? Are there alien keggers, dance clubs and all night parties? What is Halloween like do they dress as humans? Do alien men snore? Do they get yellow armpit stains on their undershirts? Do they have to be reminded to take out the trash? Do alien women get really frustrated with alien men because they can’t seem to communicate? Do alien women read the book titled “Alien Men are from Mars”? When the day comes and we land our own spacecraft on another planet and discover a new world crawling with life. Are we going to be accosted by an alien meter maid who raises her antenna and says “Excuuuuse me. You can’t park that piece of junk here!”

Hhhhmmmm…. all good questions I think.

2010 marks 30 years of Las Fiestas de Amarillo, an event that has carved a unique niche in the Amarillo community and has become a hallmark festival! Initiated by Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish members in 1980, Las Fiestas de Amarillo was created to support the projects of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.

In the span of three decades Las Fiestas de Amarillo has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support various church and community ventures. The focus of the 2008-2012 Las Fiestas seasons will be to raise a significant portion of the $2 million dollars needed for the construction of a faith/education center. Members as well as residents surrounding Our Lady of Guadalupe have recognized the need for this community facility and accepted the challenge to raise $2 million dollars for its construction. Thus far, over $387,000 has been raised through grass-root fundraising efforts supported by the Amarillo community.

This landmark anniversary will be celebrated with all of the pomp and circumstance it deserves and we invite the entire Texas Panhandle to join us July 17th & 18th as we commemorate 30 years of community, brotherhood and cooperative effort amongst the people of Amarillo, Texas. Las Fiestas Season 2010 is in full swing! There are several exciting events comprising the 2010 season including a 5K Run/Walk, car show, bike rally and parade.

Ever wondered why you could only pull it off at home once or twice, and then you have a major disaster on your hands? Safest way out--get yourself a stylist. If you insist on trusting your hair color to a box, I think you need the facts. The formula in that box is only catered to maybe fifty percent of the public. A satisfying experience from a boxed hair color is kind of like expecting gourmet flavor from a microwave dinner….when you cook or order a meal, you expect some zest & flavor. Well, boxed color is a “cookie-cutter” business; they are not going to be able to personalize a formula for the individual woman in an $8 box. Here is how it works: A generic boxed color is only for a very small group of people, who start out with the right type of hair, in the right shade. If you are not one of the lucky few with perfect hair before the color, well, you have probably just been screwed out of your money. This is how they make their buck.

Here are a few guidelines if you still want to gamble on your hair with a losing hand. Hair color runs by levels/colors. Level 1(#1) being blackest. Level 10-12 being blondest. The first number in every color stands for its level of lightness or darkness. The second number stands for the tonal value (copper, auburn, blonde, etc.). Natural heads of hair (virgin hair), level 6-12 are the most successful with boxed colors. As for levels 5 and below and/or previously colored hair, these often flop, or as we stylists say, you get “ghetto gold”. And on this note, dark hair people, colored or natural, levels 1-5, it is time to face the music. You will never, ever result in a natural light blonde. It just doesn’t happen without bleach. If it was that easy, there would be no need for professional colorists. Don’t kid yourself, 9 times out of 10, it will look like crap. And as for blondes, bleached, colored, or natural, it is not as easy as it seems. If you

are too blonde to start with, it can result in unwanted tones or just good old breakage. Either way, I don’t think you should gamble. Boxed color is proven to be successful for only a small amount of those who try it, as for the rest….sucks to be you!

On a less sarcastic note, just cut through the bull and get to a top-notch salon. Like I have said before, nothing kills a kick-ass fashion statement like a crappy hair color. There are a number of great salons in your area. If you are lost on that quest, give me a call and ask. Great hair is only a phone call away. Just be careful. A lot of stylists talk the talk, just make sure they walk the walk…..

It may come as a surprise to hear the foot-stomping strains of Appalachian bluegrass channeled through a rock band from Los Angeles, but heartache, loss and regret have always been the cornerstones of great music and this band has had it’s share.

Singer-songwriter Paul Givant grew up on the disparate array of popular musical styles any late 20th century kid did. And in that mishmash of rock, punk, country, pop, rap, and all the rest, it was American Folk and Bluegrass music that rooted deepest in Paul, transforming him and his songs. Having played in various rock bands since early high school, in 2004 Paul decided it was time to take his growing batch of old style/new school folk songs, and build them into something greater, more ferocious. The songs were there, volatile, almost flammable, but if they were to attain their potential greatness, he was going to need help.

As so many fortuned events unfold, it was through a series of chance meetings, twists of fate, and Craig's List, that Paul met kindred spirits in Sebastian St. John, Derek O'Brien, Bill Clark, Derek Swenson, and John Kraus. And in 2005 they began building the music and the band that would soon be known as Rose's Pawn Shop. This group of young musicians combined in their collective musical melting pot the old style American sounds of Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, and Hank Williams, the high energy punk of The Ramones, and The Pogues, and the melodic songwriting sensibilities of Elliott Smith and The

Beatles. They were creating something musically unique and yet imbued with a familiarity and accessibility.

The final ingredient was added one fateful day when Paul's scorned ex-girlfriend/former band mate in an act of revenge stole the band's instruments and gear and took them down to the local pawn shop. Priceless. Rose's Pawn Shop was born... The match was lit.

In spring of 2006 after months of playing live and breaking ground around Los Angeles, the band recorded and released their debut album "The Arsonist". The album quickly began receiving critical praise from print and online publications as varied as "About.com", "The Daily News", "Miles of Music", and "Music Connection". A month after its release, Rose's Pawn Shop showcased and won the grand prize in Billboard Magazine and Discmaker's: Independent Music World Series. And in the summer of that year, the members of Rose's Pawn Shop dared to quit their day jobs and hit the road, and what had started as a slow and steady burn, began spreading like wildfire.

They have been touring the United States nearly non-stop ever since. On any given day you might find Rose's Pawn Shop playing the Georgia Theatre in Athens, busking the streets of Jackson Square in New Orleans, opening for Jack White and The Raconteurs at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, ripping the walls off the club

in their month long residency at the Parkside Lounge in New York City, or hitting the main stage of Floydfest in Virginia. They're out there, growing their music, igniting their passion, and converting an ever-increasing congregation of loyal fans. And on August 6, they will be here in Amarillo playing at Hoot’s pub.

In early 2010, Rose's Pawn Shop entered the studio with renowned producer Ethan Allen (Patty Griffin, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows, Luscious Jackson, The 88, Gram Rabbit) to record the second album, "Dancing On the Gallows." In recording the new record, Rose's Pawn Shop found themselves rising to new level song craft and sound experimentation, while retaining the same fiery intensity and excitement of their early material. The highly anticipated album is slated for an early August 2010 release.

What do they sound like, you ask?

With an arsenal of banjos, guitars, mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel, upright bass, and thundering drums, their sound is a wholesome mishmash of creek mud, rusty nails and your mom's cookin'. It's sincere, straight-forward and sexy as hell, effortlessly combining such disparate musical styles as rock, country, bluegrass, and punk to create an incomprehensibly smooth and accessible sound for true believers and skeptics alike.

With wisdom beyond their years, they fearlessly confront traditional country music themes of loss, lamentation, and redemption, while throwing in some drinking-songs for good measure. Sure, they're borrowing pages from the books of Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and Johnny Cash, but Rose's Pawn Shop takes those pages, tears them up and sets them on fire with breakneck speed, bluegrass instrumentation, 3- and 4- part vocal harmonies and lyrics that'll break your heart.

Whether it's the dreamy snake-charm-thump of "Lone Rider," the wistful whisky-soaked wisdom of "Down The Line," the honky-tonk ruckus of "Funeral Pyre," or the Gypsy-infused mandolin twang of "Reckoning," Rose's Pawn Shop will hook you. Like catfish from the creek, they'll reel you in. And they won't let you go.

And you'll be glad they did.

Because something happens when you hear these songs. No matter how low you've sunk, something in the music finds you. It picks you up and carries you home.

Come check them out, August 6 at Hoots!

Mexican singer Sergio Vega was murdered while on a national tour at the weekend, just hours after denying reports of his death, local media reported. The 40-year-old singer, known as El Shaka, was driving his red Cadillac to a concert in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa on Saturday when his car was intercepted by unidentified shooters in a truck, reports said.

His murder came just hours after he told entertainment website La Oreja that online reports of his death were wrong.

"It's happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I've been killed, or suffered an accident," said Vega.

"And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her."Fans posted condolences on Twitter after they learned of the death of the singer, who recently boosted his security following the killing of several Mexican musicians.Musicians performing narcocorridos, or songs celebrating the lives of drug barons, have become the targets of rival drug gangs in Mexico with Mexican media reporting several such deaths in recent years.

Ke$ha, who burst on the scene with the drunken party anthem "TiK ToK," wants you to take her seriously.

The pop singer, who is one of the year's top-selling artists and arguably the most successful newcomer, hasn't been recognized for her artistic talents. Instead, she's been bashed for what some see as her vapid lyrical content and party-girl vibe. But the 23-year-old thinks she has been misrepresented.

"I'm responsible. I wouldn't have a No. 1 record or song if I wasn't a hardworking person," she said in a recent interview backstage before a festival performance."People say 'party girl' and instantly you think: DUI, drug problem, (privates) out, no underwear, going to nightclubs every night. Problem. I'm none of the above," she continued.

Ke$ha's not interested in controlling the public's opinion of her, in any case. She's hard at work on where her career is going. And — like her or not — her career is heading in a promising direction.

Her debut song, "TiK ToK," shot straight to No. 1 in the United States, where it sat on top for nine consecutive weeks. Her album "Animal" hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts as well; it's sold about 785,000 units since its January release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

But while many music fans have appreciated her music, critics have not been adoring. The Los Angeles Times, while giving credit to her act, had this description of her: "Ke$ha comes on like a well-worn worst nightmare, her manicure chewed and her morals thoroughly compromised," adding that the singer "offers a thoroughly fleshed-out character to embrace or despise."

And the Boston Globe slammed "Animal" and Ke$ha, saying: "Like the sound Ke$ha's hit single references, you can almost hear the clock counting down her 15 minutes of fame. Tick, tock."

Ke$ha, who's called her personal style "garbage chic," can usually be seen wearing her hair like she just came back from an all-nighter, with ripped clothes to match."It's not all about fancy clothes, it's not all about expensive shoes, it's not about always having every body part hanging out, it's not about wearing cake-on makeup," she said, wearing a Budweiser T-shirt she "bought five years ago at the thrift store for $2" and jean shorts.

Though Ke$ha is unapologetic about her image, she admits she's not always able to dismiss the negative attention: "It can bum you out when your intentions aren't, like, translated properly."

The new Korn album comes by its title honestly: Following a pair of efforts on which the pioneering nü-metal band pushed its sound in unlikely new directions, "Remember Who You Are" presents a return to the moody but muscular style that drove such late-'90s landmarks as "Follow the Leader" and "Issues" to combined sales that exceeded 7.3 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"With our last record we just hit a wall creatively with all the experimentation," Korn frontman Jonathan Davis says of 2007's untitled disc, which prominently featured keyboardist Zac Baird. "It was like, 'What more can we add to this fucking motherfucker?' "

Korn recorded "Remember" with Ross Robinson, who also produced the band's first two albums. "We wanted to make a stripped-down record with just the four of us," Davis says, referring to guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer, bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu and new drummer Ray Luzier. "And the idea popped into my head to use Ross again. I knew Munky had been talking to him, so I asked him to ask Ross, and Ross said, 'Hell yeah-let's do this.' "

Robinson says, "They've had songwriters and weird musicians and electronic stuff on the last couple of records. But none of that had anything to do with what created Korn. My job was to make sure none of that was in there. And it wasn't."

Due July 13, "Remember Who You Are" launches the group's new deal with Roadrunner Records, which

signed Korn after the band fulfilled its two-album pact with EMI. Davis says the band and its manager, Peter Katsis, "thought long and hard" about how to issue the new album, including the possibility of a Nine Inch Nails-style online self-release. "But that's not like putting an actual CD out where there's a marketing team behind you pushing the record," Davis continues. "There's certain bands or certain kinds of records that [an online self-release] is good for; it obviously worked well for Trent [Reznor]. But in our eyes it's just not there yet."

"Roadrunner is a rock label that understands rock music and the whole culture centered around it," says Katsis, who points to the label's success with Slipknot as a primary enticement. "They understood the type of back-to-basics record Korn was making and were very enthusiastic about it. It all just seemed to click."

"We clearly see where the band came from and where it's gotten to, and we've been admirers over the years," Roadrunner president Jonas Nachsin says. "So when the opportunity came up for us to potentially work with them in the next phase of their career, we jumped at the chance. And when we heard the music we jumped even faster."Senior VP of marketing and creative services Madelyn Scarpulla says that given the label's profile in the hard rock scene, Korn's signing to Roadrunner "is an almost automatic way to reach the band's core fans." At the same time, she adds, "we absolutely believe there are more fans out there to be had."

Maroon 5 has announced a second leg of its North American tour, this one coming after the Sept. 21 release of the group's third album, the Mutt Lange-produced "Hands All Over."

The quintet's latest set of dates commence Oct. 2 in Denver and wrap up Oct. 29 in Mahnomen, Minn. OneRepublic will open all of the shows, while V.V. Brown and Ry Cumming, who are both on parts of the previously announced July 30-Aug. 29 leg, will split duties during the run.

Keyboardist Jesse Carmichael tells Billboard.com that this is only the beginning of what's expected to be extensive road work to support "Hands All Over."

"As far as I know, the next two years are already pretty much booked -- around the world, several times," Carmichael says, adding that, "I'm in a totally different mindset than I've ever had before. It's much more optimistic, easygoing, just going with the flow. We've been doing this for so long now I think it's finally really kicked in for me to the point where it really doesn't matter where I sleep at night or where we are in the world. I'm going to feel at home."

Carmichael says the quintet is "doing a lot of rehearsals these days, trying to put together new musical moments for the tour, new transitions, new

cover songs, maybe different arrangements of older songs -- just really trying to give people a new, exciting experience, especially for people who have seen us a lot in the last eight years." The keyboardist is also "very excited about the look of the tour," though he's staying mum on details. "It's something new," he says, though pyrotechnics aren't a part of the plan. "I think we're going to focus on the creation of things rather than the destruction of them."

Maroon 5 is currently determining what songs from "Hands All Over" will be played live during the summer leg of the tour, prior to the album's release. The first single, "Misery" -- which frontman Adam Levine calls "the most Maroon 5-sounding song on the album" -- is just out and a likely candidate for the repertoire. Levine predicts that the group will ready "a nice handful to plug in the set," but Carmichael says he'd prefer to keep them to a minimum.

"I really like people to have had a chance to hear them before they hear them live, 'cause I just feel you can connect more," he explains. "Even my favorite bands, when I go to see them, like when Radiohead plays new songs I've never heard before, it's a little hard to hear exactly what's going on in a live setting. So I prefer for people to have heard the recordings first."
