A Near Trip Down the Yellow Brick Road

What were you doing last Wednesday evening about 8:30? It was aclose call for all of us but we likely didnt even notice that hugefunnel cloud forming just North of town. Luckily, in a period ofabout 11 minutes it began to collapse and disperse.

This summer has experienced unusual weather and there have beenearlier sightings of funnel clouds in the area. Its something that weshould watch for because they form too quickly for local authoritiesand weather departments to give warning to head for shelter. What

looks like dense purple hail clouds could just as easily be a tornadoin the making.

Tornadoes form under a specific set of weather conditions in whichthree very different types of air come together in a certain way.Near the ground lies a layer of warm and humid air, along withstrong south winds. Colder air and strong west or southwest windslie in the upper atmosphere. Temperature and moisture differencesbetween the surface and the upper levels create instability, anecessary ingredient for tornado formation. The change in windspeed and direction with height is known as wind shear. This windshear is linked to the eventual development of rotation from whicha tornado may form.

A third layer of hot dry air becomes established between the warmmoist air at low levels and the cool dry air aloft. This hot layer actsas a cap and allows the warm air underneath to warm fur-ther...making the air even more unstable. Things start to happenwhen a storm system aloft moves east and begins to lift the variouslayers. Through this lifting process the cap is removed, therebysetting the stage for explosive thunderstorm development as strongupdrafts develop. Complex interactions between the updraft and thesurrounding winds may cause the updraft to begin rotating-and atornado is born.

Were seeing these kinds of conditions more often this month sokeep an eye out and have an safety plan it mind. Heading for thebasement is a lot better than hitting the Yellow Brick Road.

Easy ways to tell if a tornado might bea threat are listed below.

Strong, persistent rotation in the cloudbase. Whirling dust or debris on the groundunder a cloud basethis may indicate a tor-nado funnel that is still inside the cloud Hail or heavy rain followed by eitherdead calm or a fast, intense wind shift. Manytornadoes are wrapped in heavy precipitationand cant be seen Loud, continuous roar or rumble, whichdoesnt fade in a few seconds like thunder. Atornado also may sound like a waterfall,

trains, and jets Night- Small, bright, blue-green to whiteflashes at ground level near a thunderstorm, opposed to lightning flashes or strikes. Thesemean power lines are being snapped by verystrong wind, which may be a tornado (aboveinformation from http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/torscans.htm) The sky may be a greenish black color. Clouds moving by very rapidly, whichindicates strong winds

    Debris falling from the sky

A funnel cloud that hasnt touched theground yet is a huge sign of a tornado.

Book Review:The Defector by Daniel Silva(9th book in the Gabriel Allon series)

Over the course of a remarkable career,Daniel Silva has established himself asone of the world's finest writers of inter-national intrigue, a craftsman worthy ofcomparison to John le Carr and GrahamGreene. His latest bestseller, MoscowRules, was not only superior entertain-ment, but a prescient cautionary taleabout the emergence of the New Russia. Now he takes that tale to the next level.

Six months after the blood-soaked con-clusion of Moscow Rules, Allon is inUmbria, trying to resume his honeymoonwith his new wife, Chiara, when a col-

league pays him a shocking visit. Theman who saved Allon's life in Moscowand was then resettled in England hasvanished without a trace. British intelli-gence is sure he was a double agent allalong, and they blame Allon for plantinghim. To discover the truth and clear hisname, Allon must go immediately toLondon - a decision that will prove to bethe most fateful of his career. In the British capital, he finds himselfonce more on the front lines of the secretwar between East and West, where Rus-sian spies and dissidents engage in the

old game of cat and mouse. There, Allonuncovers a much greater conspiracy, aplot by an old enemy to resurrect a net-work of death, to bring the world to theprecipice of a new confrontation, and inorder to stop it, he must risk everything:his ties to an organization he has servedsince his youth, his new marriage . . .even his life.

Filled with breathtaking turns of plot andpopulated by a remarkable cast of char-acters, The Defector is more than themost explosive thriller of the summer. Itis a searing tale of love, vengeance, andcourage created by the writer whom thecritics call 'the perfect guide to the dan-gerous forces shaping our world'.

What to Do if You and Your Family are in a Tornado.

    If you are in: Then:

A structure (e.g. residence, small build-ing, school, nursing home, hospital, factory, shopping center, high-risebuilding)

Go to a pre-designated shelter area suchas a safe room, basement, storm cellar, orthe lowest building level. If there is nobasement, go to the center of an interiorroom on the lowest level (closet, interiorhallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as manywalls as possible between you and theoutside. Get under a sturdy table and useyour arms to protect your head and neck.Do not open windows.

A vehicle, trailer, or mobile home

Get out immediately and go to the lowestfloor of a sturdy, nearby building or astorm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tieddown, offer little protection from torna-does.

    The outside with no shelter

Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depressionand cover your head with your hands. Be

aware of the potential for flooding.

Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

Never try to outrun a tornado in urban orcongested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safeshelter.

Watch out for flying debris. Flying de-bris from tornadoes causes most fatalities

    and injuries.

    The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy: It really was no miracle. What hap-

    pened was just this.

Dorothy: The wind began to swish / The

house, to pitch / And suddenly the hingesstarted to unhitch / Just then the Witch / To

satisfy an itch / Was flying on her broomstick,

    thumbing for a hitch.

Munchkin: and, oh, what happened then was

    rich.

Munchkins: The house began to pitch / The

kitchen took a stitch / It landed on the Wicked

Witch in the middle of a ditch / Which was

not a healthy situation for the Wicked Witch.

Dorothy: Oh, but anyway, Toto, we're home.

Home! And this is my room, and you're all

here. And I'm not gonna leave here ever, everagain, because I love you all, and - oh, Auntie

Em - there's no place like home!
