Musical Instruments

A musical instrument is a device used to make music. According to how they produce sound, musical instruments are divided into five major groups:

Idiophones- (the word is from the Greek for self-sounding) are made of resonant materials, such as metal or wood, which vibrate and give out notes when struck.

Examples: BELLS, GONGS, CYMBALS (METAL) and xylophones (wood) are all idiophones.

2. Wind Instrument- also called aerophones. Their notes come from air vibrating inside the pipe or tube made of metal or wood. When the tube is blown in different ways, the enclosed air column is set in motion.

ExampleS: FLUTES, WHISTLES, TRUMPETS, and HORNS.

3. Stringed Instruments- also called chordophones, Their notes come from the vibration of stretched strings, which are plucked, strummed, struck or stroke with horsehair attached to the bow.

Examples: HARPS, VIOLIN, BANJOS, and GUITARS.

4. Drums- also called membranophones, have skins or membranes stretched over the frame, as in the tambourine, or over the ends of wooden or metal cylinders, they are played by striking the skins with the hand, with sticks, or with soft-headed mallets.

Examples: KETTLEDRUM, SNARE DRUM, BASS DRUM.

5. Electrophones- are musical instruments with oscillating electronic circuits which originated recently.

Example: ELECTRONIC KEYBOARD-STYLE SYNTHESIZER
