Reconnecting the Pipes Lakeview Public Schools

A Systems Approach to Educating our Students P-20

Who’s to Blame?

  The college professor said:

" Such a shame, lack of preparation in high school is to blame.”

Who’s to Blame?

  Said the high school teacher:

“Good heavens! That boy’s a fool. The fault of course is the middle school.”

2

Who’s to Blame?

  The middle school teacher said:

“From stupidity be spared. They sent him in so unprepared”

Who’s to Blame?

  The primary teacher huffed:

“Kindergarten blockheads all. They call that preparation why, it’s worse than not at all.”

Who’s to Blame?

  The kindergarten teacher said:

“Such a lack of training I ever did see. What kind of woman must that mother be?”

3

Who’s to Blame?

The mother said:   “Poor helpless child.

He’s not to blame. His father’s people were all the same.”

Who’s to Blame?

Said the father at the end of the line:

“I doubt that rascal is even mine!”

Goals for Presentation

Use of a systems approach of data collection and analysis

Alignment of K-12 RtI framework  Understanding roles of individuals in the

P-20 pipeline  Individually  Collectively at each level

Lakeview’s Demographics

  3,580 Students P-12  Six buildings (4 elementary, 1 middle

school,1 high school)   12.5% Special Education   38%Free and Reduced Lunch

Mission Statement

Lakeview Public Schools, in partnership with our community, is committed to students achieving their full academic potential and becoming responsible citizens prepared for global diversity, today and tomorrow.

(approved by Board 4/9/2009)

5

The Need for Change   Lack of consistency in instruction across

grade levels and content  Everyone working hard with low results  Not making AYP at the secondary level  Failure rates increasing  Culture of average performance  Special Education referrals increasing  Hiring teachers to address failure and

caseloads   Lack of programming for accelerated

learning

In the Beginning:

Funded the development of the RtI framework with IDEA/ARRA funds

Two professionals to work as researchers and leaders in the process

Developed building RtI Teams  The work was based on our District’s

Strategic Plan

Through the IDEA Partnership Work. . We developed overarching themes:  RtI is a Framework to improve instruction

at the core  Consider other educational agendas that

help shape the framework (UDL, Common Core Standards)

 P-20  Educational departments/roles/agencies

must collaborate in this model

6

Definition of P-20

“P-20 is short for an integrated education system that extends from pre-school through higher education”

P-20

Is a system   It requires deliberate planning pre-school

through college and intentional transition activities throughout school years

Particular attention needs to be placed on partnerships with the community

It requires a heavy emphasis on college readiness
