" 0 no mORE mOURD lnli"The literature of people's musicincludes, in addition to many fightingsongs, a host of dirges and remem-

brances for fallen martyrs. Songs like"'Joe Hill", "Kevin Barry", "WillieMcGee's Goodbye". and many othersmust be sung in memory -- and inwarning. But it is the job of song-writers and composers and all musi-cians to join with millions of peoplethroughout the world to stop the needfor future dirges,

Today, two people sit in the deathhouse at Sing Sing awaiting executionfor supposedly stealing atomic sec-rets. brilliant page in the history of strugg-les for justice, In every inhabitedplace on the globe, the voice of thepeople in a cry for justice and mercyhas been heard. The conscience of theworld has been stirred by the issuesinvolved in the Rosenberg case as ithas not been for generations.

It would seem that a campaign ofthis breadth .and urgency would havestirred our composers and song-writers to produce hundreds of musi-cal works -- songs, cantatas, chorales, hymns, marches -- which would re-flect and inspire this world-wide move-ment, But this has not happened. Thenumber of songs written in the UnitedStates as past of this struggle is in-finitesmally small when contrastedwith the scope and depth of the pro-test movement.

We know that hundreds ofAmericanmusicians have lent their names andvoices to this campaign. But the cre-ative worker must do more than Sign apetition or join in the many actions ofsuch a movement. The composer andsong-writer must give musical voiceto this movement with songs whichwill stir the hearts and minds of mil-lions. This is a truly heroic respon-sibility today -- a responsibility whichmust be faced and accepted and livedup to by our creative musicians if theyWould truly consider themselves thecreator-s of the people's Songs,The struggle for clemency for theRosenbergs is grOWing in tntenstty as

the time allowed for action growsshorter. It is not yet too late for ourmusic makers to join this strugglewith the full wealth of their talentsand energies,

Songs alone will not save the livesof the Rosenbergs. But an army ofmillions, armed with and inspired by afighting mUSiC, will make the sound oftheir protest penetrate the walls ofhatred and fear and injustice.
