Ecuador on a platter TRAVEL Those who go off the beaten track, write for us. Going off track Q uito, the capital city of Ecuador, was supposed to be only a pitstop as part of my six-month South American adventure. It held me back for a whole month, given the amazing weather, wonderful people, vibrant nightlife and the fact that it’s a foodie's paradise. The magnificent city, flanked by volcanic peaks and set in the Andean valley, was declared the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978 for having the best preserved and least altered historic centre in Latin America. The capital is best viewed from atop El Panecillo, a statue of a winged Virgin Mary, which overlooks Quito from a beautiful hill. Getting here and back is a fun ropeway ride away called the TeleferiQo. Set in the misty Andean mountains, statistical- ly, Quito is the second highest c apital in the world after La Paz, Bolivia. The colonial meets the contempo- rary in this capital city. The north is the modern, commercial Quito, the old centre carries the colonial and artistic legacy. Back in the city, in the very heart, lies Plaza Grande in Old Quito. Fascinating historical buildings abound, this is the Flora Fountain of Quito, with every square foot telling a tale of the yesteryears. TASTE OF THE ANDES The best kept secret of South America perhaps, is the fact that Quito is not only a great place for local Andean cuisine, but is also a host to excellent gourmet and world cuisine. Head to the Mariscal and La Floresta quarters for wining, dining and dancing. Typical Ecuadorean cuisine consists mainly of rice, pollo asado (grilled chicken) or fish, ensalada (salad), ceviche (a tangy soup filled with fish, mostly shrimp and/or veggies) and some exotic jugos (fruit juices) - it's quite a wholesome meal. QUITO BY NIGHT Personally, I think Quito has a better nightlife than most cities I've visited. There are tons of clubs and bars to choose from in the La Mariscal (or 'Gringo landia' as it is referred to) dis- trict. Most clubs have unbeatable offers like a $7 open bar. The parties spill over into special 'afterparty' spots into wee hours of the morning. GREEN PIECE By day, this place is busy too - lots of businesses, chic restaurants and the best Spanish and Salsa schools in the world. The city is a green paradise with demarcated lanes for bikes and walkers . The cultural scene is buzzing with street artists and exhibitions. Quito, a great example of a 'green city', makes for good walking tours. Stop at Parque Itchimbia, which offers a magnificent view of the city and acres of lush green for biking and walking, a picturesque walk down the valley to the satellite city of Cumbaya and a heritage walk around Centro Historico, the city center. HOW TO GO THERE ARE no direct flights to Ecuador. Plan your route. First, you need to decide whether  you'll connect via UAE, US, UK or South Africa. Next, you will need a port of entry into South America, like Brasil or Argentina or P eru. I flew to Brazil (Sao Paulo) via Dubai and then took another flight to Quito. EATING OUT » Cafés - Coffee is a staple drink in all of South America, so they never get it wrong. Ecuadorean coffee is subtle yet aromatic with great flavour. » Geladarias - Ice-cream parlors. Sure we have ice-cream parlors in India too, what's the big deal right? The flavours are fantastic and I was addicted to the Passion- fruit (Maracuya) ice-cream. » Ceviche - This is a tasty, tangy soup in a bowl mixed with toma-  toes, onions and some veggies/ fish (mostly shrimp). An Ecuadore- an specialty and delicacy. » Dark Chocolate - Ecuadorean dark chocolate is world famous - with upto 80% cocoa, this sugar-free variant is the best chocolate you'd have ever had. HOW MUCH? ALWA YS ASK for 'almuerzos' and 'me- riendas' - full meals that cost just be-  tween $1 to $3. A meal for 2 would range from $25 - $50 (minus the booze) in finer restau- rants. Check www.kayak.com for best flight rates. Hostel: $7-20 per night / Mid-Range Hotel: $35-80 per night. Check www.hostelworld.com for best prices.
