• Established in 1991• Named after Edith Cowan, the

first woman to be elected to an Australian Parliament

• Her life was dedicated to the belief that education was the key to growth, change and improvement insociety.

• More than 27,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 5,000 international students, originating from more than 100countries



Our School

• 2,142 EFTSL of which over 2,500 are in our Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree

• We graduate over 576 nurses and midwives each year• We retain 89% of our students• Our students rank us in the top 10 nationally for

quality of the educational experience, teaching quality, learning resources, student support and skills development

• 22 % of our students are international• Our research is recognised as well above world

average having achieved the maximum ranking of 5 in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment.

What we aim to do

The objective of the clinical placements is to provide the opportunity for nursing students to immerse themselves in an alternative culture and health care system and to have demonstrated clinical competence as part of their undergraduate program assessment. Students will have the opportunity to combine both traditional and western medicine and health practices linked with their nursing theory and practice.

Fundraising at a glance

• Fundraising efforts have resulted in much needed resources for the communities including a water well for a hospital in Tanzania.

• Solar panelling for the pharmacy in Tanzania.

• Bathrooms facilities for a school in India as well as school equipment and resources.

• Midwifery equipment for the community birthing centres throughout the Philippines and medical and equipment for community health facilities.

• In addition the fundraising supports students to undertake post graduate qualifications in midwifery.

Nursing text books already sent to nurses at Soviet Friendship Hospital, Phnom Penh

Students will fundraise money to provide re-usable dressing packs and train nursing staff in aseptic techniques and wound care.




A water buffalo (Carabao) who will contribute to a local community with production of milk for

What we learn

This program provides students an insight into the provision of healthcare with limited resources and across cultural and language barriers as they have the opportunity to assist with patient consultations and offer educational, primary healthcare workshops to local communities.
