What is Ecology?

Biology

Botany

Climatology

ChemistryHydrology

Eco = oikos = house -logy = logos = study

By definition: the study of the interrelationships between the non-

Living (Abiotic) &living (Biotic) factors

of our Biosphere (house), the Earth!

The Simple Definition: The science of the relationships

between organisms and their environments.

Environmental Literacy

“Reading the Landscape”

Deciphering Nature’s Storiesand Creating Eco-Citizens!

NAAEE Definition:

1) Developing inquiry, investigative, and analytical skills.

2) Acquiring knowledge of environmental process & human systems.

3) Developing skills for understanding & addressing environmental issues.

4) Practicing personal and civic responsibility for environmental decisions.

Three-Dimensions:

• Scientific and Engineering Practices

• Crosscutting Concepts

• Disciplinary Core Ideas

Next Generation Science Standards

A Framework for K-12 Science Education

Page 21: Ecosy STEM s. u sing Ecology. as an Integrating Context. for STEM Education. Meg Edstrom, Outreach Director Ferry Beach Ecology School NEEEA Conference,

1. Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)

2. Developing and using models

3. Planning and carrying out investigations

4. Analyzing and interpreting data

5. Using mathematics and computational thinking

6. Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)

7. Engaging in argument from evidence

8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Scientific and Engineering Practices

Ecosystem Study Provides an Integrative Approach

Page 22: Ecosy STEM s. u sing Ecology. as an Integrating Context. for STEM Education. Meg Edstrom, Outreach Director Ferry Beach Ecology School NEEEA Conference,

1. Life Science

2. Physical Science

3. Earth & Space Science

4. Engineering and Technology

Disciplinary Core IdeasEcology = the Science of Making

Connections

Page 23: Ecosy STEM s. u sing Ecology. as an Integrating Context. for STEM Education. Meg Edstrom, Outreach Director Ferry Beach Ecology School NEEEA Conference,

1. Patterns: looking at different species (leaves, stems)

2. Cause and Effect: Mechanism and Explanation: relationships between soil nutrients and diversity/productivity

3. Scale, Proportion, and Quantity: plot studies/sampling; compare/contrast factors & between ecosystems; productivity/diversity

4. Systems and System Models: Ecology is the study of the interrelationships between living and non-living things

5. Energy and Matter in Systems: Flows, Cycles and Conservation input=sunlight; output=biomass (photosynthesis)

6. Structure and Function:

7. Stability and Change of Systems: disturbance = change (the lawn gets mowed) Diversity near border, diversity near middle

Crosscutting ConceptsAddressed through Ecosystem Study

Page 24: Ecosy STEM s. u sing Ecology. as an Integrating Context. for STEM Education. Meg Edstrom, Outreach Director Ferry Beach Ecology School NEEEA Conference,

Ecosystem Pattern Survey

DiversityA measurement of the number of different species in an area*

ProductivityA measurement of how much an ecosystem is able to produce – what size are the plants and how dense are they? Nutrients

A measurement of how many nutrients and how much organic matter is in the soil/substrate. Darker soil means more nutrients.

DisturbanceA measurement of how often and how much an ecosystem is affected by abiotic change.

Using ecosySTEMs to Solve & Design

Brainstorm need-based projects in schools, communities and/or neighborhoods.• Projects should be student designed, led, and implemented.

Refer to ecological principles to inform need and

design process.

Projects should reflect “smarter solutions” (David Orr)• Don’t cause other problems

• Solve for pattern/Security by design (Wendell Berry)

• Technically feasible

• Competitive

• Quickly deployable

• Resilient, redundant, repairable

(1) We do Ecology Education.

(2) We use the ABCs of Ecology® to teach ecology & sustainability.

(3) The ABCs of Ecology® allow us to Read the Landscape.

(4) The best way to Read the Landscape is through Hands-on Field Ecology.

(5) We use Narrative Education to teach Field Ecology.

(6) We are systems educators creating healthy & happy sustainable communities!
