ecologically sound lime mortars & plasters

introductionEcoright, part of the Owlsworth Group of companies, manufactures a comprehensive range of ecologically sound lime basedbuilding products. The portfolio of products provides a solution for virtually every lime building application.

All of our products are manufactured, assembled or produced by ourselves and abide to our high ethical principles of sustainabilityand longevity. We use the highest quality natural ingredients and the mixes have been developed by our own experiencedcraftsmen for maximum flexibility and ease of use.

The raw materials are sourced as close as possible to the manufacturing facility to cut down on the carbon footprint of trans-portation. All materials and ingredients come from sustainable sources. The finished products are low in CO2, some having acarbon neutral life cycle such as lime mortars and plasters, others utilising recycled materials; some using both lime and recycledmaterials!

We don’t sell to the general public. EcoRight products are distributed in bulk to authorised dealers who stock the products andcan give advice on their application.

The quality of our mortars has seen us supply numerous premier construction companies, who have used them on thousandsof of properties throughout the UK and beyond. Projects are wide ranging, from high specification ecobuilds, to renovationsand to conservation projects. The traditional nature and the use of only natural sands has meant they have been used extensivelyon English Heritage projects.

The Benefits of EcoRight MortarsThe EcoRight range has been developed to allow users to prepare highly durable lime mortars, plaster and renders without spe-cialist knowledge.

EcoRight products are suitable for almost any application, with the exeption of gypsum plasterboard and other non porous back-grounds.

The key benefits of using LIME-RIGHT include:- The ability to use it for mortars, renders and plasters- It saves time as there is no mixing, gauging or sourcing additional materials- It is suitable for period properties and new ecobuilds- It is easy to use, just add water and mix in a normal drum mixer- It has excellent performance characteristics- It ensures consistent mortar quality and mix ratios- It gives prolonged workability, reducing waste and allowing modifications- It has been tried and tested by craftsmen in site conditions

The benefits of using LIME-RIGHT instead of cement mortars include:- It gives superb flexibility, vapour permability and building longevity- It reduces requirements for expansion joints- It breathes, allowing for the use of other ecological materials- Its manufacture uses less energy than cement- It reabsorbs CO2 during curing- It enhances the appearance of masonry and makes masonry recyclable

LIME-RIGHT 350 ModerateLIME-RIGHT 350 Moderate is by far our biggest seller and is often seen by our customers as the panaceafor building with lime. Developed jointly by tradesmen and our product development team, it is widelyused as a plaster, render and mortar. The product is equally at home on new builds and periodproperties.

The mortar is exceptionally easy to use and the amount of aggregate provides an outstanding finishfor mortar and render where aesthetics are important. LIME-RIGHT 350 is often used as a finish coatplaster where a more rustic feel is required, however due to the aggregate content, where a smoothfinish is required, particularly on ecobuilds or renovations, LIME-RIGHT finish plaster is used as a skimcoat.

LIME-RIGHT 350 Moderate sets over a period of 15 to 20 days, but like all lime building productscontinues to grow in strength over a much longer period. The product remains workable for up to 12hours after being knocked up and its workable nature makes it a favourite with lime building profes-sionals, plus it is easy for the novice to adapt to.

LIME-RIGHT 500 EminentLIME-RIGHT 500 Eminent is a very hard, durable mortar used where high strength and fast setting is required.

Typical applications include footings (all work below the damp proof course), gable ends, chimney stacks, exposed brickwork and any area which is likely to be subject to inclement weather conditions. This product maybe used as a mortar, render or plaster.

Where a complete ecobuild or lime construction is required throughout, LIME-RIGHT 350 and LIME-RIGHT 500are often used on different aspects of the project. Whilst the products are interchangeable, utilising theappropriate products is important to ensure the long term building integrity. If you are unsure which productto use please call our office for expert advice.

LIME-RIGHT Finish PlasterLIME-RIGHT Finish Plaster has been designed to complement the use of our other hydraulic products. Thisis principally used to make up the finish coat on three coat plasterwork where LIME-RIGHT 350 has beenused as a base coat. Typically good plasterwork will consist of 2 layers of 9mm backing plaster (LIME-RIGHT 350) and a 4mm skim coat of LIME-RIGHT Finish Plaster, providing an overall thickness of 22mm.

For a more traditional look LIME-RIGHT 350 is often left as a finish, as its higher aggregate content pro-vides a coarse, rough surface. LIME-RIGHT Finish Plaster provides a perfectly smooth finish which cannotbe achieved by use of a single lime mortar product. Typically this is used on renovations to a periodproperty where the smooth appearance of plaster is required, but with all the advantages of flexibilityand an ability to breathe, which are characteristics of our hydrualic lime range.

EcoRight Fat Lime MortarsEcoRight Traditional Fat Lime Mortars are suitable for many applications from period properties to ecobuilds. The only exceptionis gypsum plasterboard and other non porous backgrounds.

As a rule of thumb our fat lime products are used internally; for external use we recommend the LIME-RIGHT hydraulic limerange which sets faster and is slightly more durable. However fat lime mortars have been used externally since Roman timesand indeed many of our period properties would have originally have been built using fat lime products of this type.

Internally the highly workable nature of our fat lime products ensures that you can achieve a superb finish with Fine Stuff which, when applied in the correct manner will be superior to modern gypsum plasters. Coarse stuff is used internally as backingplaster or where a more rustic, rough finish is desirable. This finish, with aggregate of up to 5mm, is also suitable for use as atraditional render.

If you are in doubt which product is appropriate for your project simply call our office for free advice.

Using Fat Lime MortarsOther than lime putty, which is normally mixed with sands, all other products can be used directly from their packaging. Itshould be noted that lime mortar is a thixatropic material, which means that the more you work it the more workable it becomes(ie. softer and wetter).

COARSE STUFFEcoRight Coarse Stuff is a 3:1 mix of selected sharp and builders sands plussieved slaked Buxton quicklime (lime putty). The quicklime is slaked by EcoRightat our production facility and matured for at least 3 months prior to blending.

Coarse Stuff can be used for plastering, rendering, bricklaying and pointing. The blend dries to a beautiful buff/cream colour and the aggregate content isperfect for period properties. Gentle stippling of the mortar prior to its dryingreveals the aggregate and provides a stunning finish for mortar or render.Coarse Stuff is also commonly used as the backing coats in three coat plasteringwork, with Fine Stuff being used to provide the perfect finish. Often howevera rough coarse finish is required and the Coarse Stuff is left as the final coat.

HAIRED COARSE STUFFEcoRight Haired Coarse Stuff is used to provide greater flexibility and strengthin the dried finish product. The hair effectively bonds the plaster and as suchwe use horse hair approximately 1.5” long. We can however supply HairedCoarse Stuff with goat hair should it be required. Haired Coarse Stuff shouldalways be used when working with lath and wood. It should also be consideredon smooth stone backgrounds.

Please note: the hair will dissolve in the mix over a 6 month period and so thisis freshly made and should be used soon after purchase or you will end up witha supply of expensive coarse stuff!

FINE STUFFWidely recognised as the best quality lime finish plaster available, EcoRight Fine Stuffhas been used extensively on thousands of properties throughout the world and itsreputation is welll founded.

The recipe for EcoRight Fine Stuff is a mix of 2 parts sieved soft sand and silver sand toone part matured sieved lime putty. As with any product it is a combination of thequality control in production and the use of high grade materials that affords aconsistently excellent end result. This product has been extensively developed in thefield by our own expert lime plasterers for a decade; as such it not only produces aperfectly smooth and beautiful white finish it is also extremely easy to apply .

LIME PUTTYFor those who wish to mix their own fat lime mortars, repair the finest of cracks orwish to make their own lime wash, EcoRight Lime Putty provides the answer. For theinexperienced however it is advisable to use our ready mixes to ensure the consistencyand quality of the end product.

EcoRight Lime Putty is a high calcium fat lime, slaked and sieved at our productionfacility and then matured for in excess of 3 months. We use the finest Buxton quick-lime; the same product used in all our fat lime products. Our mature Lime Putty istested by Buxton Lime to the European EN459-2-2011 standard and is available in 15litre, 1/2 tonne bags and 675kg bulk bags.

ECOFILLEREcoFiller is a traditional lime based filler suitable for all small cracks and gaps in modern and period properties. It is specially formulated not to show through paint or lime wash. EcoRight EcoFiller is fully breathable and, with several applications, is capable of filling larger cracks. The product is quick and simple to use andprovides a viable ecological solution with no VOCs.

AVAILABLE COLOURSThe production of LIME-RIGHT hydraulic lime mortars utilises natural kiln dried sands and as such our standard range is colouredby the sands used. Our standard colour is a light buff, however we have other colours as part of our range - please ask fordetails.

We always advise customers to purchase requirements for a project at a single point, as sand is a natural product so may besubject to colour variation. By purchasing all requirements at once you ensure sand from a single seam from the quarry, whichhelps to ensure minimal colour variation.

SPECIAL MIXESWe batch produce project specific mixes and can offer both a colour matching service and advice with regard to aggregatecontent. Where this is offered each mix is carefully controlled and the exact proportions are recorded as part of our qualitycontrol system should additional material be required.

AVAILABLE QUANTITIESAt EcoRight we cater for all requirements and our fat lime products and our LIME-RIGHT products are available in a variety ofsizes and configurations to suit your project. Starting with 22kg tubs, 25kg bags, 1/2 tonne and 1 tonne bags.

Gauging the exact amount of product required for a particular job can prove tricky so please feel free to call our advice line ifyou need assistance. We can also advise on the most appropriate mix of product sizes to minimise costs.
