Behavioural Economics

Upendra Kunwar

About the Book

Contents

Behavioural economics studies the effects of psychological, cognitive, emotional, cultural and social factors on the economic decisions of individuals and institutions and how those decisions vary from those implied by classical theory. Behavioural economics is primarily concerned with the bounds of rationality of economic agents. Behavioural models typically integrate insights from psychology, neuroscience and microeconomic theory. The study of behavioural economics includes how market

decisions are made and the mechanisms that drive public choice. In the context of behavioural economics, time inconsistency is related to how each different self of a decision-maker may have different preferences over current and future choices. One common way in which selves may differ in their preferences is they may be modelled as all holding the view that “now” has especially high value compared to any future time. This is sometimes called the “immediacy effect” or “temporal discounting”. This comprehensive book will be a valuable resource guide for students, professionals and researchers of economics and management.

Preface 1. The Ascent and Dissent of Economics 2. Labour Supply in the Real World 3. Nature of Behavioural Economics 4. Foundations of Behavioural Economics 5. Recessions and Depressions 6. Experimental Economics

Shashi Kiran Nayak

About the Book

Contents

Experimental economics is the application of experimental methods to study economic questions. Data collected in experiments are used to estimate effect size, test the validity of economic theories, and illuminate market mechanisms. Economic experiments usually use cash to motivate subjects, in order to mimic real-world incentives. Experiments are used to help understand how and why markets and other exchange systems function as they do. Experimental economics have also expanded to understand institutions and the law (experimental law and economics). A fundamental aspect of the subject is design of experiments. Experiments may be conducted in the field or in laboratory settings, whether of individual or group behavior. Variants of the subject outside such formal confines include natural and quasi-natural experiments. Economic experiments are not simulations or role-playing exercises. They involve real people who make serious choices. Through their efforts, participants stand to make or lose substantial amounts of money. The simplest form of economic transaction—and the simplest experiment to conduct—is a two-person exchange. This experiment addresses how a single buyer and seller of an item reach, or fail to reach, mutually agreeable terms of trade for that item. This book provides the comprehensive analysis and critical discussion of the methodology of experimental economics. The book will prove invaluable for both students and academics working in these areas.

1. The Emergence of Experiments in Economics 2. Conducting an Experiment 3. Neuroeconomics 4. A Selective Survey of Experimental Results 5. Experiments in Market Design 6. Experiments in Political Economy 7. Experimental Economics across Subject Populations 8. Gender 9. The External Validity of Experimental Results 10. Learning and the Economics of Small Decisions

The book outlines the dynamics, issues and concerns of food security, sustainable development in agriculture, soil nutrients and water use efficiency, equitable distribution of gains, income and employment, etc. The book makes an attempt to describe the contribution of biotechnology in agriculture. It focuses on the major problems that have continued to plague Indian corporate farming like poor availability of quality seeds and planting materials; limited adoption of modern cultural and

cultivation practices; delay and poor application of irrigation and technologies; scattered use of crop protection techniques; slow development of harvest and post-harvest technologies; inadequate storage and logistics and dearth of transport and road network. Both government and industry level initiatives have been discussed for developing future strategies. An endeavour was made to deliberate on corporate farming and contract farming – a vehicle for the transfer of technology, modernization of peasant small-holdings and the creation of a stable and politically conservative class of family. As for organic production, it requires highly focused attention to specifications, monitoring, procurement system and payment.

About the Book

Contents

'This excellent and carefully written text explains and demonstrates the relevance of economic thinking for management. The authors cut through the hype which characterises so much of modern management fadism and through carefully explained concepts show how clarity of thought can greatly assist management decision making. No prior knowledge is assumed but by the end of reading this book a considerable amount of economic knowledge will have been acquired.' - Professor Peter M. Jackson, Director, University of Leicester Management Centre

'It is well written and makes the subject accessible to readers. The chapters are appropriately ordered and divided and it would be easy to use this text for teaching purposes.' - Chris Britton, Principal Lecturer, De Montfort University.

'The authors are to be congratulated for having achieved their goal of producing an authoritative text which is well formulated and accessible.' - Geoffrey Thomas, Teacher in Economics & Business Studies, Ernest Bevin School.

Economics for Business offers an interactive and illuminating interpretation of the economics that anyone studying business needs to understand. The book explains how firms, consumers and government interact in markets, and how, from a business perspective, the economy as a whole operates.

Using numerous examples and case studies, Economics for Business brings economic ideas alive in a real world setting. Each chapter concludes with a series of questions and reflective exercises designed to reinforce and deepen the reader's understanding. The book gets right to the heart of the central economic debates shaping our society: Is the Euro a good idea? Can politicians be trusted to run the economy? Designed specifically to show the real-life relevance of economics to business students, Economics for Business provides a stimulating and flexible core-text for undergraduate and HND students.

Preface, Economics and Business, The Market, The Firm, Firms' Costs and Revenue, Market Concentration and Power, Investment Policy and Appraisal, Business and Government, Factor Markets, The Macroeconomy, Macroeconomic Policy and Business, Unemployment, Economic Growth and the Business Cycle, Stabilising the Economy, International Trade, Balance of Payments and Exchange Rates, Transnationals, Globalization, Answers to Self-Test Questions, Glossary, Bibliography, Index.

Environmental and Economic Sustainability

Paul E. HardistyAbout the Book

Contents

Never before has the quest to balance the needs of people, the environment, and the economy been so important. While sustainability has been widely taken up by governments and business, the world has continued to move in increasingly unsustainable directions, from continued dependence on fossil energy to rising greenhouse gas emissions, and erosion of biodiversity. We know what the right thing to do is, but somehow we cannot make the changes that are needed, and so we continue with business as usual, producing business-as-usual results.

Based on more than fifteen years of research and practice, Environmental and Economic Sustainability introduces the environmental and economic sustainability assessment (EESA), a new way to make decisions that meets the challenges of the 21st century. Incorporating elements of life-cycle analysis, risk assessment, cost-benefit analysis, and comprehensive sensitivity analysis, EESA provides a fully quantitative, objective, and rational way to include all of the social, environmental, and economic issues relevant to a decision into one comprehensive analysis. The author demonstrates how to apply EESA using examples across a number of major industries, including petroleum, mining, and public utilities, and covering key issues such as water, greenhouse gases, waste, contaminated sites, and renewable energy.

Introduction, Sustainability in the Twenty-first Century, Quantifying Sustainability for Improved Decision Making, Water, Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change, Energy, Contaminated Sites and Waste, Best Practice for the Twenty-first Century, Index.

About the Book

“ The International banking and currency crisis, and the advent of the European Union, have made the subject of international finance one of the most important areas of economics for research and policy. Unfortunately, the older theories have been disappointing in their explanatory power. Both graduate students, researchers and staff economists in the European Central Bank, the independent central banks, the IMF and the World Bank will greately benefit from an evaluation of the state of the art. Professor Gandolfo has written what will be a classic in international finance. His erudition, expository and technical skills are combined to fulfil these needs, He explains with great lucidity the strengths and weakness of various approaches. The exposition is carried out at several levels, similar to the way that Irving Fisher wrote his celebrated books. The literary part is clear, and the underlying intuition of the arguments is stressed. This is followed by a mathematical analysis, which uses the state of the art techniques. In this manner the reader can go from the intuition – literary argument to the formal derivations and proofs.

Preface, Introduction, I. The Basics, II. Flow Approaches, III. Stock and Stock-Flow Approaches, IV. The Exchange Rate, V. The Intertemporal Approach, VI. International Monetary Integration, VII. Problems of the International Monetary (Non)System, VIII. Appendices, Index.

Game TheoryAn Introduction 2nd ed.

E.N. Barron

About the Book

Contents

The thoroughly expanded Second Edition presents a unique, hands-on approach to game theory. While most books on the subject are too abstract or too basic for mathematicians, Game Theory: An Introduction, Second Edition offers a blend of theory and applications, allowing readers to use theory and software to create and analyze real-world decision-making models.

With a rigorous, yet accessible, treatment of mathematics, the book focuses on results that can be used to determine optimal game strategies. Game Theory: An Introduction, Second Edition demonstrates how to use modern software, such as Maple™, Mathematica®, and Gambit, to create, analyze, and implement effective decision-making models. Coverage includes the main aspects of game theory including the fundamentals of two-person zero-sum games, cooperative games, and population games as well as a large number of examples from various fields, such as economics, transportation, warfare, asset distribution, political science, and biology. The Second Edition features:

Ÿ A new chapter on extensive games, which greatly expands the implementation of available models

Ÿ New sections on correlated equilibria and exact formulas for three-player cooperative games

Ÿ Many updated topics including threats in bargaining games and evolutionary stable strategies

Ÿ Solutions and methods used to solve all odd-numbered problems

Ÿ A companion website containing the related Maple and Mathematica data sets and code

Ÿ A trusted and proven guide for students of mathematics and economics, Game Theory: An Introduction, Second Edition is also an excellent resource for researchers and practitioners in economics, finance, engineering, operations research, statistics, and computer science.
