Proactive Recovery
As we gradually return to work, the partnerships
we have forged over the last few years are more
important than ever.
In the face of pandemic and social unrest,
representatives from the Arapahoe/Douglas
Workforce Development Board,
Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, local and regional
economic development and chamber partners,
business and industry associations, educators and
other stakeholders are working together to ensure
a full economic recovery.
We cooperate so that our businesses can compete!

National Outlook
National unemployment in June 2020 went
down 2.2%, and total nonfarm payroll
employment rose by 4.8 million. However, at the
same time COVID cases are curving steeply
upward, and there were 1.4 million new
unemployment claims, a decrease of 55,000
from the week before, but still high.
June unemployment figures are not yet
available for Colorado, greater metro Denver, or
the two-county Arapahoe/Douglas area.

Recovery Progression
These waterfall graphs show the downward trends week over week in both initial
unemployment claims and continued unemployment claims in Arapahoe and
Douglas counties. The fact that continued claims (left graph) have gone down five
weeks in a row suggests people are returning to work slowly.
For perspective, the week of June 27, 2020, there were 40,241 continuing
unemployment insurance claims in the two-county region.

Current Supply/DemandThis graph shows the
number of registrants in
Connecting Colorado (blue
bars, same as the bar graph
on the last slide), and the
number of active unique job
postings by occupational
family during the last 30
days in greater metro
Denver.
By looking at the imbalances
– those areas where
demand exceeds supply, we
can stay informed about how
we can best target workforce
development funds to
optimize business-relevant
outcomes.

Continued Labor ShortagesThis graph is taken from the one on the last slide. It gives a stark view of the labor shortages being
experienced right now. It is difference between the point-in-time number of job seekers available through the
workforce system and unique active job postings in the last thirty days by occupation family. As a result of
discussions with several stakeholders, who felt the number of job listings over the past 30 days gives the
viewer a better perspective, the timeframe on listings was changed from the seven days reflected last week.
![Page 9: Economic Recovery Snapshot · 53-3033 Light Truck or Delivery Services Drivers 1,554 (12.2%) 53-7062 Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand 1,537 (3.9%) 13-1111 Management](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022050208/5f5b4abe9e3278006f4ee33c/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Computer Occupation Shortages
This bar graph shows the
same thing as the previous
slide, except that it drills down
into computer occupations,
which is the grouping with the
greatest labor shortage.
For example, we would read,
“In greater metro Denver,
there are 5,455 more job
postings for Software
Developers, Applications than
there are people to fill those
jobs.”
