ABOUT THE KIMBERLEY ECONOMIC FORUMIn 2015 the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) will host the Kimberley Economic Forum, an opportunity for business leaders across the Kimberley and other areas to come together, discuss the future of the region and ways to expand agriculture, aquaculture, mining, tourism and logistics.

The Kimberley Economic Forum was inaugurated in 2007 by the BCC&I to provide an opportunity for the business sector to obtain the very latest information on industry trends and major developments in the Kimberley region. Since, it has alternated annually between Broome, Derby and Kununurra, and is well supported by large and small businesses as well as government officials.

New economic conditions mean that most stakeholders are operating in a dynamic new business environment. What business operators now need is grass roots input, the opportunity have questions answered and discuss possibilities with other successful operators. This year the forum promises to shoot straight to the heart of issues affecting our region’s businesses. Devised entirely of interactive panel sessions, attendees can steer discussions on various topics with some of the nation’s leading experts.

At the beginning of each session, some of the panel will deliver very brief relevant presentations on the session topic. The main body of the session will then be thrown open to discussion and questions around the way the topic impacts on regional business and delegates will be able to bring their own situations to the discussion.

The ultimate goal of the 2015 Kimberley Economic Forum: to balance unity and diversity for the Kimberley’s future.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome on behalf of the Committee for the Kimberley Economic Forum and its host body the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In creating this year’s event we have moved away from traditional one speaker presentation sessions to a more dynamic and interactive format. This reflects the new business environment, where speed of response, access to information and structural flexibility drive effectiveness. Delegates from business big and small, industry and all levels of Government can expect useful and rapid outcomes from both the sessions and the networking opportunities they generate.

This website features a broad program outline, and speakers and sponsors are being added as they confirm their involvement. We look forward to seeing many members from Kimberley Chambers of Commerce at the Forum, and to meeting those of you who will visit Broome to attend. As we have a set capacity there will be a defined number of seats available to other attendees. We would encourage you to register now, and secure your accommodation and vehicle if necessary.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERKEEPING PERSPECTIVE Michael Pascoe

Michael Pascoe is one of Australia’s most experienced and thoughtful finance and economics commentators with four decades in newspaper, broadcast and on-line journalism, covering the full gamut of economic and business issues, as well as occasionally straying into more whimsical matters of the human condition. Despite being a reporter of the “dismal science”, he maintains a sense of humour and the ability to speak and write entertainingly about the state of the nation and world. “I’ve sat through too many boring economics and business presentations to think anyone else should have to,” he says. Increasingly, Pascoe’s body of work represents a fight for keeping perspective amidst the noise and haste of a news cycle with a painfully short attention span and sometimes dubious motives. “There’s more data but less information, more opinion but less thought,” he says. “The low ebb of Australian politics has reduced debate to three-word chants and name calling. Both sides of politics have put the pursuit of power ahead of the best interests of the nation, ahead of being honest with the electorate. It’s never been more important to look through the headlines and political prejudices to find the facts.” Michael Pascoe is a contributing editor for the Fairfax Media BusinessDay web sites, a regular commentator on Channel 7’s Sunrise and news programs, a columnist for Yahoo7 and Mining Monthly and in demand as a speaker and facilitator.
