Thoughts and Prayers List Changes
It has long been the policy that names added to the Thoughts and Prayers list
would be automatically removed after 3 months unless requested to be removed
sooner. Unfortunately, this policy has not been followed to the point that the list
continues to grow and names are seldom if ever removed. To better manage the list
the following changes are being implemented:
1. A database of names has been created and will be used to remove names after
three months.
2. Requests should be made online or through email. If that is not possible you
may contact the office but please do so only if the other methods are unavaila-
ble to you.
3. All names on the current list will be removed as of March 14-15th bulletin.
Please (re)submit any names now for addition to that bulletin.
We realize how important this list is for those whose names are on it and trust that
God will bless them all with his love.

RCIA group celebrates the Rite of Sending and Rite of Election
On Sunday, February 22nd at the 10 am mass, Father Honesto celebrated the Rite of Sending for the
RCIA/RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults/Children) catechumens and candidates. The RCIA
participants have been meeting faithfully every Wednesday since October 1st. Lent begins their final pe-
riod of Purification and Enlightenment as we draw
closer to celebrating the Sacraments of Baptism, First
Communion and Confirmation with them at the Easter
Vigil on Saturday, April 4th.
The Rite of Sending included testimonials from each
person’s sponsor on the study and prayer to which our
soon to be new Catholics have been committed. It also
prepared the participants to be sent to meet Bishop
Randolph Calvo for the Rite of Election at St. Rose of
Lima that same afternoon. The Rite of Election is al-
ways an inspiring event. It’s quite a sight to see all of
people from the whole Diocese of Reno who are pre-
paring to join the church (it must have been close to 100
people).
Below are some group shots from the Rite of Election, if
you can’t quite see everyone, you can find their individ-
ual pictures in the church entranceway. The RCIA team
asks you to please keep them in your
prayers – here’s a prayer list for you.
Thank you for your continued support
and love!

Candidates for
First Communion & Confirmation:
During the Christmas season each St. Albert the Great family should
have received a copy of the book Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew
Kelly. If you were unable to obtain a copy then, please ask for a copy af-
ter any Mass and we will be happy to provide your family with a copy.
Rediscover Catholicism was written as a guide for personal and small
group reflection and as a means of delving deeper into our Catholic faith.
As such it should be used as a study text with a focus on enriching one’s
understanding of what it means to be Catholic. If you haven’t done so
already, please read the Prologue and Introduction and then together as
a family or with friends discuss and answer the following questions:
1. Describe the moment in your life when you most enjoyed being
Catholic.
2. How did the story about the epidemic and the little boy change the
way you think about Mass? What else did the story challenge you to
reflect upon?
3. In the Introduction of Rediscover Catholicism the author shares
many ideas about where we are as a Church and possibilities for the
future. Which idea most struck you from that section? Why?
4. This is a very hopeful book, and yet the author is not afraid to con-
front the very real challenges we face as a Church at this moment in
history. As you reflect on the future of Catholicism:
A) What are you most concerned about?
B) What are you most hopeful about?
5. It seems the first Christians lived differently, loved differently, and
worked differently, and in the process captured the imagination of
the people of their time. How can you live, love, and work so as to
intrigue the people in your own place and time?
6. In what ways is God calling you to a bigger future at this time in
your life?
7. What makes you proud to be a Catholic today?
In the coming months we will continue to probe and discuss what is
found within the pages of Rediscover Catholicism.

ALL IN PERSPECTIVE
GIVING IT ALL AWAY
Deacon Chuck Lanham
The Roman Emperor and stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius is widely known for his words describing a philosophy of
service and duty. In his book Meditations he wrote much on that which makes for a good life. He wrote “The happiness of your life
depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and
reasonable nature.”
A few years ago a friend, upon returning from a mission serving the poorest of the poor in a South American country,
remarked how amazingly happy those who had nothing were. Living in abject poverty, they would offer literally anything and
everything they had, and the joy they displayed when their gift was accepted was both genuine and heartfelt. Those who had noth-
ing cared little, if at all, for what others might have. For them, life was good and they entertained “no notions unsuitable to virtue and
reasonable nature.”
All that was of true value to them was living their lives for the glory of God. Neither fame nor fortune was of any im-
portance for the simple truth was they had no understanding of either. Life was as they lived it and it was enough. Marcus Aureli-
us, a pagan, wrote of the only true value of wealth in saying, “The only wealth which you will keep forever is the wealth you have given
away.”
What is often difficult to learn is that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least. Jesus
described this attitude and approach to life with great gravitas when he related the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
When we reflect on what Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” we are often forced into
a paradigm shift, changing our perspective with respect to wealth and poverty. What we must come to understand is that two peo-
ple can look at the same thing and see it quite differently. But what is paramount is that no matter how we see things, it is for
whom we are living our life that is of utmost importance.
Our lives are not our own for they belong to our God who gave us life. If we live solely for ourselves, striving only for
earthly treasure and pleasure, we will forfeit any and all eternal reward and we will most assuredly die poor. As St. Paul writes,
“None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether
we live or die, we are the Lord’s” we must live our lives for the glory of God alone.
Marcus Aurelius wrote that “the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts,” a
compelling metaphor for how our lives can be shaped and bent by what we perceive to
be of value and importance. A life focused on the accumulation of things (money, power,
fame) for the sole benefit of oneself is a life poorly lived. Indeed, it could be said that
such a life is one that has not been lived at all.
