People are exposed to chromium in these four basic ways:

Breathing (inhalation) Eating of contaminated food) Drinking of contaminated water Skin contact (with chromium compounds/salts).

MOST DANGEROUS COMPOUNDS OF CR6+ Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) is a danger to human

health, it is carcinogenic. The most dangerous compounds of Cr6+ are:

NON-OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE TO MERCURY This is exposure that occurs outside the workplace. The

high vapor pressure of mercury encourages vaporization or volatilization. Inhalation of such air introduces the metal to man.

The filling of the teeth with Hg-amalgam can release the metal during normal chewing.

Fish consumption: This constitutes the largest source on non-occupational exposure to the general population. Methyl mercury accumulates in fish body and bio-accumulates up the aquatic food web.

Exposure to medicine that contains Hg such as laxatives and disinfectants etc.

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM:Micromercurialism or asthemic-vegetative syndrome

occurs. This is a non-specific condition of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by the following symptom:

Tremor in fingers, eyelids, lips Enlarged thyroid Increased radio-iodine uptake by the thyroid Labile pulse Increased mercury excretion in urine. Hematological changes etc. Increased emotional excitability (erethism).

ZINC Zinc is the 23rd most abundant element in the earth

crust. It occurs naturally in air, water and soil but the mineral ores give more of the metal. The dominant ore is zinc blende, known as sphalerite. The other ore are wurzite, smithsonite and hemimorphite. Zinc is largely mined in:

occupational exposure This occurs principally from industrial sources or

workplace. Hence all workers that have to do with zinc as earlier stated are exposed to it occupationally. Examples are miners, coal and waste combustion workers etc.

Non-occupational exposure This occurs essentially through many foodstuff and

contaminated drinks which may be higher when it is stored in metal tanks.

HEALTH EFFECTS Stomach cramps Skin irritation Vomiting Nausea Anemia Respiratory disease Eye irritation Fatigue Very high level of zinc can cause: Damage the pancreas Disturb the protein metabolism

Environmental effect of zinc Zinc in water (from wastewater of industrial plants)

increases the acidity of waters. Some fish can accumulate Zn in their bodies, when found in zinc contaminated waterways. Zinc in fish can bio-magnify and eater in food chain.

Insoluble zinc in soils can contaminate groundwater. Large concentrations of zinc in soils of farmland pose health threat to animals and plants also (apart from groundwater contamination).

PROBLEMS WITH FERTILISERS Fertilisers enable farmers to grow more food

as they are replacing the nutrients removed from the soil by plants

However, if too much fertiliser is added and it then rains, the fertiliser finds its way into rivers and lakes

This causes the water plants to grow and as there is competition for light, some will die

PESTICIDES Pesticides kill insects that will damage crops They also kill harmless insects or can get

washed into rivers and pollute the water They may even end up in the food chain

BURNING FOSSIL FUELS IN CARS AND POWER STATIONS PRODUCES CARBON DIOXIDE, SULPHUR DIOXIDE AND OTHER GREENHOUSE GASES

carbon dioxide traps heat in the atmosphere and causes the temperature of the earth to rise.

This leads to disruption of the weather patterns eg drought, floods

Some weeds may thrive on the extra carbon dioxide while other plants are killed

SULPHUR DIOXIDE WILL DISSOLVE IN RAIN PRODUCING ACID RAIN Acid rain damages trees and pollutes rivers

and lakes.

AIR POLLUTION AFFECTING CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

AIR POLLUTION Diseases of the heart or blood vessels, or

cardiovascular disease, and in particular coronary heart disease (harm to the heart resulting from an insufficient supply of oxygenated blood) are leading causes of death in the US.

Spikes in the concentration of other air pollutants – especially the combination of fine particulate matter and nitrogen oxides – correlate with increased hospital admissions for potentially fatal disturbances of heart rhythm.

What we have found is that these tiny particles are inhaled and enter deeply into the lungs where they induce inflammation in the lung tissues. This inflammation spills over into the bloodstream and inflame the blood vessels, which allows cholesterol and other substances to easily build up, a condition known as atherosclerosis, one of the main causes of heart attacks and strokes.
