Thus, this brochure is a snapshot of what the Vaucluse and its natural territories (Luberon, Ventoux, Rhône Valley, plateau of Sault, Comtat Venaissin, Popes’ Enclave...) offer committed “responsible” visitors, as well as “responsible” neo-tourists, all in search of breaks, relaxing or active, unusual stays or Zen holidays in tune with Nature.

“Sustainable organic” tourism in the Vaucluse means accommodation with the eco-responsible label, organic farms and restaurants, festivals and activities around biodiversity, farmers’ markets in symbiosis with the Earth, 100% natural sites or in harmony with Nature, gentle, environmentally friendly outings and sporting activities ...

All over the département, men and women, supported or incited by local institutional partners, have understood that tomorrow’s tourism should mean balance, respect for people, values and a smaller ecological footprint.

Within easy reach of major European tourist markets by high-speed train or TGV (Paris-Parisian Region, UK, Benelux, Germany...), the Vaucluse is determined to be a part of the sustainable trend towards modern tourist consumption.

NB: Some sites in the Vaucluse are fragile and sometimes overcrowded in summer: the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, Fontaine de Vaucluse... sites that are really worth visiting and deserve their popularity. This is why we should all incite visitors to take full advantage of them - in the off-season.

Experienced riders only! This new, highly tech-nical blazed trail, with 5,750 m vertical gain, will make keen mountain bikers ecstatic. It takes the most beautiful trails over Mont Ventoux through landscapes of lavender and vineyards to the Lu-beron foothills and villages perched on high. No less than 232 kilometres long!This circuit has now been listed as an FFC Grande Traversée, linking the village of Savoillans on the north face of Mont Ventoux to Fontaine de Vau-cluse. The landscapes are not only breath-ta-kingly beautiful but incredibly varied often with spectacular panoramas. This is no smooth ride, since it takes you on tough single tracks. Most people will need five days to complete it, al-though seasoned riders can get it done in three. This huge «new generation» water park should open its doors in the Beaulieu area of Monteux in June 2015, one year before another neighbouring project «Spirouland».

This area already comprises of a 10-hectare water stretch in the heart of a landscaped 35-ha wooded park. Among the activities on offer are: pedalos, swimming, canoeing, fi-shing, fitness trails, fitness areas, water slides, trampolines, zip wires, cycling on bikes or electric mopeds, bird watching, or simply lazing on a on the beach . On a 4.7 hectare site, there will be dozens of giant waterslides and attractions, such as rafting, most of which have never been seen before in France, and the largest surf simulator in the world!The project adheres to the principles of sustainable deve-lopment with water consumption in particular 80% less than that of a classic water park.

Founded in 1977, the Luberon Regional Natural Park is a well preserved area of life covering 185,000 hectares around the Luberon Massif (Mourre Nègre 1,125 metres above sea level). It includes 77 communes, 51 of them in the Vaucluse. The differences in climatic conditions, exposure, soil and al-titude contribute to the wealth and variety of the natural environments in the Luberon and its excep-tional biodiversity: 1,800 plant species (35% of French flora), 135 birds (50%), 2,300 butterflies (40%)

The Luberon Park was listed by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 1997, in recognition of this terri-tory’s essential role in the regional ecological balance, the value of its heritage from an international

standpoint as well as the initiative for its protection and management.With its well known natural, geographic and architectural heritage, the Park has the role in particular of greeting the public to raise awareness to environmental conservation. Thus, visitors are invited to La Maison du Parc in Apt, with its permanent and temporary exhibitions on the riches of the territory, with the Luberon Geology Museum. Another feature: once a month the Luberon Park organises creative workshops to discover the heritage of the Luberon. It is also at the origin of initiatives in favour of “sustainable tourism” (Panda “gîtes”, “hôtel au naturel”...).

The park organises the “buissonnières” – guided walking tours around the themes of nature, heritage and environ-ment. These excursions are free of charge but participants need to register at “La Maison du Parc” – [email protected] also proposes “Luberon Rendez-vous Nature” from April to October, a selection of guided tours and outdoor sports.

With over 1,000 plant species ranging in altitude from 200m to 1,900m, 120 species of birds and large mammals like deer, wild boar and Corsica mountain sheep, Mont Ventoux stands out as a sanctuary for biodiversity. Result: in 1990, UNESCO recognised Mont Ventoux as a Biosphere Reserve, a status that pays tribute to its extraordinary natural inte-rest and highlights the need for its protection.

On 90,000 hectares, three protected zones were targeted: central, buffer and transition. All are privileged areas for hiking, cycling, discovering the landscapes, flora and fauna...

The ochre of the Luberon can be seen from Roussillon to Rustrel, dubbed “Le Colorado Provençal”. The change of scene is radical; it feels as if it were thousands of kilometres away in the Ameri-can West. The better to understand the industrial adventure of the area around Apt, the “Conservatoire des Ocres et Pigments Appli-qués de Roussillon” in the former Mathieu factory is a must, with its washing tanks, pipes, settling tanks, kiln…

Guided visits of the site (50 min.) Classes on dyeing, rendering, patina, etc, are organised year round for professionals and private individuals.

Established on the terraces of the castle of Lauris, this botanical garden makes it possible to discover more than 250 species of plants with chromophoric properties. It reveals another side of the environment: how to produce colours, defence methods to neu-tralize harmful radiations and capturing infra-red rays in case of freeze or concurrent germination. You learn that that in between food additive codes like E160, E163 or E170 are hidden nettle, paprika, annatto or nettle...and thousand other fascinating things.This garden is both a conservation area for plants used in dyeing and an educational centre open to all. Open from mid-May to the end of October. A session timetable is available on the website. This beautiful property received the label ‘Jardins Remarquable’ in August 2011.

The naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre, who is now more famous in Japan than in France, was in the late 19th century a scientist of many talents, with a passion for nature and insects in particular. He settled in Sérignan in 1879 and for nearly 40 years, until his death, maintained a skillfully preser-ved wilderness (Harmas means «fallow ground» in Provençal French) in order to encourage the presence of many species of insects. This is also where he wrote his famous «Entomological Me-mories», painted more than 600 watercolours of fungi and established a herbarium of about 15,000 pages. You can visit his house with its collection of nature-inspired watercolours, his herbarium and garden, today owned by the Museum of Natural History.

For the centenary: The permanent exhibition has been given a makeover with new exhibits, the exhibition of about 60 original watercolours depicting mushrooms by Jean-Henri Fabre, a temporary exposition of photographs of the Harmas site, concerts of ancient music and dramatic performances in connection with Fabre’s literary output, nocturnal scree-nings of Henri Diamant-Berger’s film «Jean-Henri Fabre», guided tours of the grounds on Thursday mornings, tours of the grounds with commentary in the local Provençale dialect, conferences and excursions with a guide to Mont Ven-toux to appreciate Mediterranean flora and fauna, and wicker craft workshops for children and adults.Open from 1 April to 31 October, every day except Wednesday (except July/August). Mornings only on Saturday and Sunday.

What a wonderful idea to have created a trail dedicated to the naturalist, under the summit of Mont Ventoux. At the level of the Mont Serein resort, 1,400m above sea level, a 6-kilometre loop with some fifteen theme panels with infor-mation on the natural wonders of the surrounding slopes that Fabre used to explore. Flora, fauna, peasant tradition…, an easy trail, ideal for an afternoon with the family, winds through a landscape of short grass and dry stone through a wooded relief. Visitors are captivated by the information on the stands, and by the fabulous landscapes that unfold: those of the southern Drôme, the Alps, Les Baronnies, the “pays de Sault”… All under the “sacred” protection of the Ventoux’s bare summit.

Some people leave a mark on their times, and there are others who leave their mark in the places where they stayed. The entomologist Jean Henri Fabre is one of those. A naturalist with many talents, an eminent man of science as well as a poet and win-ner of a prize from the Académie Française, his discoveries are recognized in Russia and Japan, but often ignored in France.In Sérignan-du-Comtat, where he lived from 1879 until his death in 1915 and wrote his famous “Souvenirs entomologiques”, his home and garden have been restored. Nearby, the new Naturoptère is a centre dedicated to the observation and knowledge of insects.This vast structure (1,000m²), designed and built in harmony with Nature, features exhibition areas that are both fun and of great scientific quality. The museography includes games, the use of new technologies, live animals rather than fixed collec-tions and a clear varied discourse for several levels of interpretation.It offers: - a 30m² area to learn about the famous naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre:

- three theme areas dedicated mainly to insects and plants: In parallel, two 4m² areas dedi-cated for three months to a specific plant and insect, such as the cicada and the olive tree. Numerous animations are also organised according to the seasons. Among them, evening outings to find night insects are a big success!

And, since the Naturoptère aims above all to be educational, three study rooms are equipped with binocular magni-fiers, microscopes and computers to enable children and adults to observe Nature and better understand Nature. Lec-tures and documentary films will be shown year round in Espace Imago.

The semi-subterranean building respects HQE (High Quality Environmental) standards: omnipre-sence of wood, brick walls, insulation with plant materials (hemp), green roof... Energy expendi-ture is controlled, with a boiler room using wood chips, the adoption of hyperventilationat night rather than air-conditioning. Recycling of rainwater for watering and phytofiltration of was-tewater are other major points. One small room in the building is dedicated to its design on the theme of eco-architecture.

Llamas to clear the land and check forest fires: what an original idea! In 1979, a fire devastated dozens of hectares of forest near the farm, saved just in time... In 1984, Pierre Scherrer consulted the Museum of Natural History in Paris and acquired a few animals. This was the start of the “Ferme expérimentale d’élevage de lamas”, for the purpose of clearing the brush. Today, a herd of some thirty llamas graze peace-fully on the land. In addition to their role in prevention, they delight children and adults thanks to explanations of Marie Scherrer, now an expert on this animal from the Andes. The tour also includes an arts and crafts workshop where wool is used to weave tapestries, shawls, garments, etc. Reservation required.

Le Carbet Amazonien’ is an 1150-m² farm that raises tropical and Palaearctic butterflies. With their colour-ful and sometimes surprising hues, the masters of the tropical greenhouse number over 500. In his rare plant nursery, Patrick, a landscape gardener by trade and enthusiastic entomologist, raises over 40 spe-cies of these amazing lepidopterans and understands their reproduction completely. At the hatchery, visi-tors can observe egg laying, birth and the first hours of a butterfly’s life and, in this way, understand their complex and magical metamorphosis. A little tropical paradise that brings nature nearer... The butterflies develop, feed and reproduce naturally in complete li-berty in their huge aviary. The visitors’ route follows the course of the butterfly’s development: egg laying, different stages of the caterpillar’s development, stages in the production of chrysalises, birth, mating... visitors can see everything and stimulate all their senses.

In the hottest part of the day, the colourful flight of the butterflies creates an ever-moving ballet. If you would like to know how long a butterfly lives, what it feeds on or why one should not touch the powder on its wings or if you simply want to delight in the wonders of nature, this enchanting, educational farm is now open from April to November.

Epicurium is a fun educational institution inviting visitors to sensory, scientific and cultural discovery of fruits and ve-getables.The exhibition changes with the seasons and is completed by a discovery trail in the vegetable garden and orchard that takes visitors to the heart of the living world of fruits and vegetables. Man or woman, we all tend to use natural products more and more to take better care of ourselves and of our envi-ronment. The creation of home-made cosmetics is part of this trend: economical made-to- measure products with the pleasure of creating!

« One hour for me », is the title of the natural cosmetics creation workshops, offered by the laboratory Centiflor of Entrechaux. Located close to Vaison-la-Romaine, it is specialised in essential oils and bio-cosmetics manufacturing.

In their workshop, a cosmetics specialist proposes to learn how to create creams, body milks, deodorant and other cosmetics. One to four workshops are proposed per day. Each session has a different theme with the creation of 1 beauty product per workshop. For example, there are different workshops about the theme « Normal Skin » such as « Body Pealing, Sugar & Spices », « Hydrating Face Vegalift Cream – Camomile & Geranium » or «Silky Body Milk – Verbena & Rose », «Mother & Baby» and hair treatments. The schedule is been updated regularly and available on the Internet where you can register directly. Workshops over 3 days are available too.

The closing down of railway stations can have a posi-tive side! Thus, the General Council of Vaucluse took the initiative of converting the former rail track which used to cross the Luberon into a “Véloroute”, a bicycle track 33 km long now between Les Beaumettes and Saint Martin de Castillon. It is a continuous secure track, separate from the road, made with a coating that reduced CO2 emissions. The backbone of the northern slopes of the Luberon Massif, along the Ca-lavon River, this bicycle trail places the treasures of Provence within pedals’ reach (Pont Julien, former railway station of Goult, town of Apt...), along the old track of the SNCF (French National Railway).

In the end: over 70km will eventually link Cavaillon to Forcalquier!

Dedicated to cyclotourists, the discovery trail “Around the Luberon” covers 236km in the foothills of the massif. Marked in both directions, it provides a chance to discover, easily, step by step, the re-sources of this exceptional site thanks to its small, quiet roads and welcoming stopovers in villages.

There are also side trips, including a 15 to 51km loop, “Les Ocres en vélo” (cycling through the ochre landscapes).

“Le Pays d’Aigues à vélo” (cycling around the Pays d’Aigues area) offers yet another 45 to 91km loop (yet to be sign-posted) to explore the territory between Lourmarin and Pertuis via La Tour d’Aigues: 13 villages amid vineyards and olive groves, well worth the detour...And finally, the “Véloroute du Calavon”, mentioned just above, is an ideal family route with 33km of a linear secure cycle track.The “Vélo Loisir en Luberon” network is made up of professionals of accommodation, rental, transport and guides, as well as cultural sights and wine cellars. Yet another example of the preservation of peasant know-how of the past! In short: in the rural Vaucluse in the 19th century, food had to be found for all mouths. Since no saving was too little, the limestone chips and pebbles were removed from the land. What could they be used for? To build bories, dry-stone corbelled structures for storing equip-ment and keeping livestock, and aiguiers, vaulted rock-cut cisterns to collect rainwater. These ingenious, truly ecologi-cal structures can be seen along a trail that starts from the village of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt: a 3-hour (9,5 km) hike to discover how to make the best use of resources in the past.

Or how a 19th-century “ecological” initiative transformed this part of the Luberon into the most fabulous “transplanted” cedar forest in Provence. Over a century ago, it was decided to plant seeds from the Algerian Atlas Mountains in Bon-nieux. Over time, they grew and proliferated to form a cool dark green 250-hectare forest between Bonnieux, Lacoste and Ménerbes. This is an ideal place for outings, on foot or a bicycle. A 2-hour botanical trail with information panels will delight families. And, in clear weather: a breathtaking view on Mont Ventoux!

The Durance, deceptive in its docile appearance, flows in part along the border between the Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône départements. Its relief changes with the floods and rainfall that affect it. With 753 organic farms, the Vaucluse department ranks 1st in the PACA Region for the number of establishments converted to this kind of far-ming.

In the Vaucluse, the Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) for organic far-ming is 15% compared to the national average: just 3.6%. It represents 17 921 ha of organic farming and conversions (+ 10% more than in 2011). Its geoclimatic diversity provides for a wide range of production throughout the département: fruit, vegetables, wine, cereals, aromatic and medicinal plants, stockbreeding...

The Vaucluse is the first organic wine-producing department in France with 9 076 ha of vineyards. Perfume, aromatic and medicinal plants (PPAM) represent 4% of production with 804 dedicated hectares.Stockbreeding is also present, essentially with poultry and some herds of sheep.

‘Agribio Vaucluse’ is an association (1901 Law) that brings together 170 organic farmers from different sectors. Among its missions, the associa-tion aims to encourage local production networks and boost dialogue between consumers and producers. The history of petit épeautre (einkorn wheat) is very much as-sociated to that of Mediterranean civilisations, and it has been so for thousands of years.It is very resistant, to cold in particular, grows at altitudes where standard varieties cannot endure and thrives in poor soil by extracting all its meagre resources. This surely accounts for its survival in a region with harsh winters and soil that can-not support wheat. At present, production represents 300 to 350 hectares, with some sixty producers in the Vaucluse, Alpes de Haute-Provence, Drôme and Hautes-Alpes departments. It requires no pesticide or herbicide and very little water. The nutritional value of einkorn is much higher than that of other cereals; it is rich in protein and minerals and contains the 8 amino acids essential to the body.Today, einkorn producers have received a PGI (Protected Geo-graphic Indication), an official label of quality granted in May 2009 by the European Commission.

In 1985, technicians from the Luberon Regional Natural Park found “blé meunier d’Apt” seeds thanks to a retired far-mer from Buoux. Also known as “touselle blanche de Pertuis”, this wheat was once grown around the town of Apt, the Luberon mountains and Upper Provence and the local elders still remember the taste of the pastry and bread made with it.These old cereal varieties have very interesting properties: adaptation to climatic constraints, regular, if modest yield, organoleptic and nutritional qualities. These wheat varieties are also suitable for people suffering from gluten-intole-rance, since the nature of their protein differs from that of more recent varieties of grain.Thanks to the mobilisation of players in the field (producers, bakers, millers, technicians, institutional partners and consumers) and prospects for development through this theme, Agribio-04 applied to coordinate the creation of a Luberon-Lure wheat-flour-bread network to promote old varieties of cereals.In September 2007, the indication “Parc naturel régional du Luberon” on flour and bread from the Luberon made with “meunier d’Apt” wheat was validated. An application to make the designation “Pain du Luberon” a trademark was filed with the French Patent Office INPI.Specifications to guarantee the authenticity of the final product “farine & pain du Luberon” included:- old wheat varieties, including “meunier d’Apt”, must be grown in the territory of Park;- farms are on a family scale and millers and bakers are craftsmen with traditional know-how;- the environment is protected and nurtured: grain is grown on farms practising a form of agriculture that preserves Nature, biodiversity and landscapes.Partner bakers sign a “partners’ charter” defining the product and studying all the product’s regulatory aspects.

Pioneers of direct sale from producers to consu-mers, the nine “Marchés Paysans” (Farmers’ Mar-kets) in the Luberon emerged in 1982, from an initiative of the Regional Natural Park. Only local farmers can have stalls and sell their own seaso-nal production: fruit, vegetables, poultry, cheese, fruit juice, jam, aromatic plants, wine, flowers... Freshness and gustatory quality are guaranteed. From May to November, these markets are held in Apt on Tuesdays, Saint-Martin de-la-Brasque on Sunday, Pertuis on Wednesday, La Tour d’Ai-gues on Thursday, Cadenet and Pertuis on Satur-day. In the vein of farmers’ markets, the “Bienvenue à la Ferme” network and the local farming council (Chambre d’Agricul-ture de Vaucluse) created “marchés du soir”, weekly evening meetings of producers and consumers organised in 17 villages in the Vaucluse, from April to October. Although not all the sellers are organic farmers, all are producers. You will find them on Thursday evenings in Cavaillon, but also in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on Mondays, Pernes-les-Fontaines on Wednesdays, Vaison-la- Romaine on Thursdays, etc. Complete list of markets available from March.

This idea could easily spread. At L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Alexis Fiorucci launched, at the very start of the year 2000, a concept of baskets of fresh produce sold on the Internet. Thanks to the site lepanierpaysan.com, some 5,000 cus-tomers can buy fruit, vegetables and processed products grown locally, most organically. The buyers have no obliga-tions, unlike CSAs (AMAP in French: associations for the maintenance of peasant farming). Anyone can order what they like on the Web, and the products are delivered free of charge within an 80km radius. This local farming with home delivery, a fair trade idea that is profitable for producers since there are no middlemen. The idea is making headway, and can be found in other parts of France.

With the plethora of winegrowing estates in the Vaucluse, Château de la Dorgonne really stands out. Since 2008, the Hôtel La Coquillade has been delighting us with its subtle blend of refined and discreet luxury, a dream environment, out in the Parc du Luberon and an ecological sensibility that makes sense in these protected landscapes As soon as 2010, it earned it the prize for Best Eco-Responsible Hotel from Condé Nast Johansens. La Coquillade delights those who appreciate discreet harmonious luxury, for its direct - respectful - ties with the environment and local vini-cultural traditions. The Domaine has further committed itself to an environmentally friendly approach by taking mea-sures such as only using certified organic products and low energy bulbs. Its investments and actions for the protection of the environment enabled it to obtain the EU Ecolabel in 2012. In 2015, after one-and-a-half years of hard work, the hotel is doubling its capacity – no less than 63 rooms and suites in total – and is adding a 1500m² spa. Among its amenities, an indoor pool, 9 treatment rooms (including hydrotherapy), hammam, sauna with a view, ankle-foot spa, hair-spa (Furterer), Kneipp bath, sensory experience, fitness room and herbal tea bar. Covering 400 m², 4 modular seminar rooms, all with the benefit of natural light, can accommodate all types of corporate events and weddings. And since cycling holds a special place here, the hotel –which is the official BMC outlet and test centre in Provence, offers bike rentals, solo or with a guide. Re-opening 1st April 2015.

Sharing their farming skills in a friendly atmosphere, such is the noble ambition of Evelyne and Richard Arbaud. Settled in Ferme de Lapalud in the Upper Vaucluse since 1989 and having adopted organic farming since 1995, the couple converted the large farm building into four spacious chambres d’hôtes, where stone masonry reigns supreme. A broad swimming pool makes the stay even more pleasant. The 17-hectare farm includes orchards, vegetables and a few ani-mals. Organic products are directly available in a shop: honey, wine, fruit juice, jam and stewed fruits come straight from “Le fruitier des Frémigières,” the establishment’s transformation workshop.
