Ecma International
Ecma International is an industry association founded in 1961, dedicated to the standardization of Information and Communication Technology & Consumer Electronics
Originally “ECMA” stood for European….
In 1994 the name was changed to simply “Ecma”.
“International” was added because membership is from around the world, in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

Ecma TC38ECMA-370: TED
Product Related Environmental Declaration
Information tool to facilitate green procurement
After 3 editions of ECMA TR/70, decided to:
• Harmonise with IT ECO declaration
• Publish as ECMA-370 Standard in June 2006
• Also known as TED
Rue du Rhône 114 - CH-1204 Geneva - T: +41 22 849 6000 - F: +41 22 849 6001 - www.ecma-international.org 9
Why did we harmonise?
• Combine the strengths of both successful declarations
• Meet future customer needs e.g. consistent communication to customers EU wide (worldwide, in different languages)
• Save costs: several companies do both or morereduce development/update efforts
EU basis for green procurement (e.g. EKU)
• Prepare for IEC standardisation (TC108) as consequence of eco design standardisation (ECMA-341/IEC 62075)
TR/70

TED benefits
• Internationally agreed standard to communicate
• Corporate Environmental Profil (CEP)
• Product Environmental Attributes (PEA)
• Common & comparable attributes to compete with eco labels
• Synchronised with eco design standard ECMA-341/IEC 62075
• Optimised for B2B/public green procurement
• Applying experience of IT-, telecommunication- and consumer electronics industry

TED Special Benefits
TEDQ: third party quality control through IT Företagen
• Unique feature in Ecma
• Benefit for EU companies – join IT eco declaration system
Freely available
Company declaration (annex A) – also for non-product supplires (software, business partner, integrators, …)
Up-to-date with fast updates possible (every half year!)
German implementation expected by year end
Future „compliance tools“ for EU IPP and EuP

TED Content
Structured by legal & volunatry sections
Company Environmental Profile (CEP, Annex A)
• Environmental Management System & company programs
Product Enviromental Attributes (PEA, Annex B)
• hazardous substances• batteries• electrical safety, EMC and connection
to the telephone network• consumable materials• product packaging materials• treatment information for

ECMA-370 2nd Edition (Dec 2006)
Update Energy Consumption
• New: Typical Energy Consumption (TEC) – ES imaging
• Synch with IEC 62075 CDV – energy consumption – power cannot be consumed
Simplification
• Removed „special“ national legal requirements
• Minor changes due to feedback during implemention
Open Issues:
• How to improve review / change process
• Community like process with WIKI? On Ecma / IT Eco Declaration web?
• Encourage timely input by other stakeholders like customers, IEC, NGO, …

WW Eco Declaration (TypeII) Harmonisation
Target: one set of worldwide attribute & harmonised declarations
Status:TED = ECMA-370: international standard with focus on EU implementation (first)
EPEAT = IEEE 1680: national (US) PC/monitor eco label with US focus and implementation
GPN declarations: Japan only, TED accepted for EU by JP members, TED acceptance in JP to be improved (Mar 2007)

ECMA-370 Summary
• Meets professional public and private purchasers demand for standardized, comparable product environmental information
• Is being continuously improved in a transparent and qualitative process since 1996
• Is used by the majority of IT companies (IT eco)- reduces the need for eco labels- is suitable to answer demand in green public tenders - meets some of the basic principles according to the EU IPP or EuP Directives
So, ask for ECMA-370 (IT eco) declarations …
… let us know what you think and if anything is missing
