3. Operating Modes
EC2 PLUS operates in one of the three modes as describedbelow. The operating mode can be selected from frontkeypad. The three modes are:
1 . Automatic
2 . Manual3 . Test
The three operating modes are described below:
3.1 Automatic Mode
In Automatic mode starting and stopping of the engine andon/off control of circuit breakers is governed by sixconditions: Availability of healthy mains supply, the roomtemperature (analog i/p) ,room temperature (digital i/p),*BTS2 voltage , *BTS3 voltage and the Exchange battery
voltage. If mains supply is healthy, genset is not started orswitched off if running. If mains supply is unhealthy then alow Exchange battery voltage as compared to lower setvalue or a high room temperature(digital i/p) or low roomtemperature (analog i/p) as compared to set value or low*BTS2 voltage or low *BTS3 voltage start the genset.Gensetwill be stopped when mains recovered.
NOTE: *BTS2 voltage and *BTS3 voltage areavailable only in version 1.1
3.2 Manual Mode
In this mode EC2 PLUS ignores mains voltage. It onlyresponds to STARTand STOP commands from the keypad.Similarly generator and mains CBs are also operated fromthe keypad.
Precaution:Before giving Start command to generator, one must ensure that the generator CB is open. Start keyshould be held down until the engine reaches thresholdspeed. The generator CB may now be switched on fromkeypad provided that the Mains CB is off. Stop key turns offthe engine (remove this line).
When stop key is pressed, the generator CB is switched offand then the generator is stopped.
The mains CB can also be activated from the keypad.Interlocking of mains and generator CBs is built into thefirmware.
3.3 Test Mode
In this mode no-load and load test run of the Gen-set is
possible. In TEST mode, the engine is automatically startedand supervised and it is checked whether the generatorhas reached its rated voltage. Should a mains failure occurduring test mode operation, the mains emergencyoperation is initiated automatically.
Mains CB open/close switches are active. Similarlygenerator CB open/close switches are also active.
4. Mains Supervision
EC2 PLUS continuously monitors three phase mains supplyvoltage and detects unhealthy conditions. If unhealthy
conditions are detected, then it trips mains CB and initiatesstarting of genset depending upon thermal managementcondition. Unhealthy condition shall be defined by user inEdit mode.
Unhealthy conditions are defined as follows:
If voltage of any phase falls below a lower set limit orexceeds a higher set limit.
If difference between voltages of any two phasesexceeds a preset limit (% unbalance)
If frequency falls below a lower set limit or exceeds ahigher set limit.
If Single phase enable is selected then all thephases must become unhealthy for a valid unhealthycondition.
4.1 Parameter Selection
4.1.1 Voltage
User selects lower and upper limits of line voltage inparameter setting mode. EC2 PLUS can be used for singlephase / 3 phase systems. However the user can set theunder and over voltage values.
If mains voltage in any phase either exceeds the upper setlimit or falls below the lower set limit, then it is deemed tobe an unhealthy condition. In Auto mode the relay tripsmains CB if the condition prevails continuously for the userdefined time delay.EC2 PLUS is also provided with mainsvoltage unbalance monitoring.
4.1.2 Frequency
User selects lower and upper limits of acceptable frequency. If the frequency is beyond the limits then it is considered tobe an unhealthy supply condition and the mains CB must
trip if the condition prevails longer than user defined timedelay.

4.1.3 Frequency Blocking Voltage
Frequency supervision is disabled below this voltage.
4.2 Circuit Breaker Supervision
The unit is also equipped with Circuit Breaker Supervision. For supervising the healthiness of circuit breaker thefeedback is to be connected at terminal 19 & 21 fromnormally open contacts of Mains & Gen. Circuit Breakerrespectively.
After issuing closing command, if the feedback signal fromNO contact of breaker is not received, the unit will indicatea fault by displaying message on the LCD (16*2) displayfor Mains & Generator respectively.
5. Generator Supervision
While the genset supplies power, it can also show all thoseabnormalities which were anticipated in mains supervision;there are however two added parameters: engine speedand battery voltage.
5.1 Parameter Selection
The voltage/frequency limits for the DG set can be setindependently. The setting procedures are similar to themains parameters settings.
The over-speed is sensed through the frequency of the
generating set. In case of high frequency the relayaccordingly trips the generator CB and proceeds to shut-down the engine.
5.2 Overload, CT Ratio, Run Time, Rest Time,
Room Temperature, Exchange Battery Lower Setting
Min Max Increment in Step
Over Load 10A 30A 0.5A
CT Ratio 1 10 0.5
Run Time 1Hr 10Hr 0.5Hr
Rest Time 1Hr 10Hr 0.5Hr
Room Temp 30deg 100deg 5deg
Exchange Battery 40V 48V 1V Lower Setting
*NOTE: Editable through serial comm. port
5.3 Run Time and Rest Time
Generator will continuously run till the set Run Time elapsesafter that generator will shut down and LCD(20*4) will
display REST_TIME in its status(screen nos 1,last line).Itwill remain in the off state till the set Rest time expires.
5.4 Exchange Battery Voltage Supervision
EC2 PLUS relay continuously monitors exchange batteryvoltage. If the Exchange battery voltage falls below a lowerset value, it only gives the visual indication by glowing theLED marked Exchange Battery Lowon the front plateof the relay. When the exchange battery voltage returns to
its operating limit, then the LED marked ExchangeBattery Low returns to normal state.
5.5 DG Battery Voltage Supervision
EC2 PLUS relay continuously monitors DG battery voltageand if the voltage falls below a set value, LCD (20*4) willdisplay DG_BAT_LOW in its fault status. Indication of highbattery voltage is also available with fixed settings i.e. iflow battery voltage is set below 12 V high battery voltagewill be automatically set as 14 V & if low battery voltage isset above 12 V, setting of high battery will be 28V.
5.6 Thermal Management
EC2 PLUSrelay will not start Generator even when mainsfail. If exchange battery voltage exceeds higher set valueand room temperature (analog i/p) is more than set valueand room temp (digital i/p) is low and *BTS2 voltage and*BTS3 voltages are high when all these above conditionssatisfies EC2_PLUS will not issue start command and LCD(20*4) will display DG_ON_HOLD in its status (screen nos1, last line). When any of this condition gets violated andmains voltage is not present generator will get the startcommand.
NOTE: *BTS2 voltage and *BTS3 voltage are available
only in version 1.1
5.7 Emergency Stop
The Gen-set can be stopped in the event of an emergencyby shorting terminal marked Emergency to the negativeterminal of battery. In this case the re-cooling phase isbypassed.
5.8 Time Circuits
EC2 PLUS provides a user friendly MMI (Man-MachineInterface) for setting different time circuits for engine startdelay, stop delay, mains restoration, re-cooling etc.All theseparameters can be viewed in MMI-2.
The Table 1 gives the entire time settings.
5.9 Time Elements
5.9.1 Auto Hooter Reset Period
It is related to hooter operation and it can be set by theuser. It starts as soon as hooter starts. If hooter is not silencedwithin auto-silence period, then at the expiry of this periodhooter is automatically stopped.

5.9.2 Generator CB on Delay:
Generator circuit breaker is not closed immediately aftergenerator exceeds ignition speed. A time delay isintroduced. This time delay can be set by the user. Duringthis time EC2 PLUS checks if generator voltage is healthy.
This timer starts after generator voltage reaches safe limit.
5.9.3 Generator Re-cooling Time:
Engine is not switched off immediately after GCB is opened. The Gen-set needs time to cool off. If it is stopped coolingaction also stops and the heat stored in its mass starts raisingits temperature. The temperature can attain dangerouslevels depending on the duty to which Gen-set was subjectedto before GCB was opened. Generator is allowed to runat no load for sometime, this is known as re-cooling time.Re-cooling time can be set by the user.
5.9.4 Generator Cranking Period
Engine is cranked for the duration of Generator CrankingPeriod and then waits for engine to start. If engine starts(generator Voltage > Ignition voltage OR Ignition Oncontact closes), during Generator Cranking Period thenalso cranking is stopped. This period can be set by theuser.
5.9.5 Generator Cranking Wait Period
It is the time interval between two start attempts. During
this period cranking is not repeated.
5.9.6 Mains Restoration Time:
It is the time from mains recovery to closing of mains CB.This timer is started when mains recover. Mains must remainhealthy during this period otherwise the timer is reset.
5.9.7 Generator Start Delay:
Time between mains failure and initiation of start procedure.
5.9.8 Delayed Supervision Time:
Oil pressure takes time to build up and hence low pressurealarm is initially on. Thus the alarm is not meaningful. Wemust give time for oil pressure to build up and then monitorthe alarm. The process is called Delayed Supervisionand this time is user settable. The timer starts after generator voltage exceeds ignitionvoltage.
This is also a form of delayed supervision. When GCB is closed, entire load is taken by the generator. If there are loads which draw heavy starting current, thengenerator voltage will dip as soon as GCB is closed. Thedip will persist for some time. During this time generatorvoltage should not be monitored otherwise EC2 PLUS willdecide to trip generator. The time allowed for this delayedsupervision is Generator tripping delay. It is usersettable.
5.9.9 Generator Off Delay:
This timer is started as soon as generator unhealthycondition is detected and generator is turned off when the
set time elapses. This time is set to Generator Off delay.
