Having built a reputation on safety, quality, productivity, and providing exceptional levels of customer service, the company is one of Kansas’ most respected and capable contractors. Eby Construction is the principal operating subsidiary of Eby Corporation, a privately owned entity. With 73 years in the construction industry, the company now builds general buildings in the medical, educational and commercial markets, industrial and plant-related work, historical renovations and select projects in the transportation market.

The SituationAdam Dunn is the Chief Financial Officer for Eby Corporation and as part of his role he manages the IT infrastructure for the company. As with many other construction companies, Eby Corporation finds that much of its data growth is driven by the need to retain an ever-increasing amount of rich media in the form of images from multiple sources—accounts payable and receivable invoices, reports and payroll timecards. As Eby Corporation moves towards reducing the amount of paperwork it retains, it is increasingly reliant on a scalable storage system as a data repository for its electronic information.

The Challenge Eby Corporation previously used an optical jukebox as its primary storage for data. The optical jukebox was in place for ten years when the optical drives that read the platters started to break down. As the drives of the optical system increasingly failed, the company’s IT team needed to repeatedly access the optical platters and manually reinstall the image onto the image server. This became an everyday occurrence and caused tremendous inefficiencies in the workflow.

access than finding and searching paper versions for the pertinent data. Eby Corporation needed to replace the optical system with a solution that facilitated a move to a scalable, disk-based retention system capable of accommodating its ever-growing storage capacity needs.

The SolutionEby Corporation evaluated its options for replacing the optical system and quickly decided on the Imation InfiniVault Active Archive Storage Appliance as the ideal platform for long-term retention of its data. The InfiniVault offered a seamless transition to a disk-based system with the advantages of online access and guaranteed data retention.

Eby Corporation utilized JD Edwards World accounting software and EMC ApplicationXtender software to manage the movement of its data, and the Imation InfiniVault capably stepped up to the task. “It’s been a seamless, easy transition for us. There have been no problems; it’s been great for us,” said Dunn.

Eby Corporation is extremely pleased with its decision to use the Imation InfiniVault. As the company moves forward, it is already investigating opportunities to electronically store job-site photographs and scanned images of blueprints, to make the images easily available to sub-contractors. The company feels confident that as its storage repositories become significantly larger, since image files will only become larger and increase in resolution, the InfiniVault will continue to satisfy its storage demands.
