Removal of asbestos insulation debris from within major high street retail outlet in the heart of London’s West End.
Client: Clements Retail Ltd Location: Regent Street, London W1 Contractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: November 2010 Sector: Retail
About the project:
The project involved the removal of asbestos insulation debris from pipework and low level wall surfaces. The asbestos debris is likely to emanate from a previous asbestos removal project carried out to a poor standard. The debris was identified during a refurbishment and demolition survey carried out in advance of the shop re-fit work commencing.
Project challenges:
This project was undertaken in the heart of London’s West End on one of the busiest shopping streets in the country.
All plant and equipment was delivered outside normal working hours to minimise contact with the general public. Waste was also removed from the building on an out-of-hours ‘wait and load’ basis. Deconstruct Operatives had to ‘transit’ to the decontamination unit that was sited on the adjacent road, whilst wearing their respiratory protective equipment (RPE). This required careful planning and timing was of the essence so as to avoid unnecessary alarm to the public.

Removal of asbestos containing thermal insulation from a redundant plant room within the basement.
Client: High Street Retailer Location: Surrey Contractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: July 2008 Sector: Retail
About the project:
The project involved the removal of asbestos containing thermal insulation and decontamination of a redundant boiler room beneath a major high street retailers premises in Surrey.
The project was completed over a period of ten days and required a full-time supervisor and three operatives. The works were conducted with full regard for the high street trading environment and in conjunction with the normal operation of the business premises above the work area.
Project challenges:
Given its high street location the works had to be completed with full and due regard for the general public with waste removal scheduled for before 7am so as not to block the high street or cause unnecessary disruption to the local traders.
The project involved the use of specialist injection techniques to remove the insulation materials from the redundant boiler and pipe work. Personal air sampling undertaken during the works indicated that the control measures implemented on this project were extremely effective.

Removal of asbestos contamination from within ceiling void of a high street store in Huntingdon.
Client: Environtec LtdLocation: High Street Retailer, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire Contractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: September 2011Sector: Retail
About the project:
As part of the refurbishment of the a high street store in Huntingdon, Deconstruct were chosen by the clients consultant to remove the mineral fibre ceiling tiles and associated asbestos contamination from within the ceiling void. The store had been temporarily closed to allow the refurbishment works to be completed and the asbestos had been identified during a refurbishment and demolition survey undertaken previously.
Project challenges:
This asbestos removal project was carried out inside a shop located on a busy high street in a town centre location. Live electrical services were know to be present within the ceiling void and care had to exercised when working around these. Due to restrictions on space, it was necessary for our operatives to utilise a modular decontamination unit that was sited in the adjacent courtyard. With no room for a skip on site, all waste had to be removed on a ‘wait and load’ basis outside normal working hours.
