Bikes, cars and trafc are prevalentthemes in Gerardos art, encouraging

the viewer to consider their eects

on the modern world. For Gerardo,

art and bicycling are both outlets by

which to express his views on politics,

consumerism, and environmental and

social issues. Art is such a powerful

political tool,

says Gerardo,

explaining

that, to him,

riding bikes

is not just

a casual

activity, but

a political

statement

as powerful

as his art.

In his 20s, Gerardo moved to San

Diego and opened an art studio called

Acamonchi, where he creates commercial

and fne art in many orms. Tucked ina mixed residential-industrial block

o San Diego, Acamonchi is a speck o

color in a crowd o apartments, thrit

shops, hip neighborhood caes and the

occasional abandoned building.

Gerardo is known or his skills in

stencil-making and screen printing,

and makes posters, t-shirts and other

collateral or

his clients

mostly action

sports brands,

bands and

a variety

o other

businesses.

His fne art,

primarily

collage-like

paintings, is

resplendent in

color and takes shape across a canvas

o recycled and ound objects. An

expert in mixed-media, Gerardo uses

stencils, photographs, block prints,

ree-drawing and painting techniques

to create urban, grafti-like pieces

that have been shown in museums and

galleries worldwide.

Driving is something Gerardo

knows little about. Although

his let bicep is inked with a

lime-green Volkswagen Beetle

tattoo, hes never owned a car

and doesnt have a drivers

license. I know how to

drive; I just choose not to

drive, says Gerardo. His

health, environmentalism and

Gerardo was born and raised in

Ensenada, a small town 70 miles

south o the Caliornia-Mexico border where, as a

teenager, he discovered commercial art working

at print shops screening t-shirts and posters.

Bike riding has great potential or

riendship and community, says

Gerardo, as he talks about the purpose

o these mass ridesto laugh, have

un, meet new people and get crazy

on bikes in a peaceul expression o

individuality. But in the original spirit

o critical mass, these rides harbor an

undercurrent o grassroots activism

as well. Theres a political statement

behind them, says

Gerardo. Reclaiming

the streets, making it

sae or everyone to

ride and reminding

motorists to be more

aware and drive saely.

Gerardo Yepiz is in a gang. But

dont worry, they practice non-

violence. Its a bike gang, actually,

and they call themselves the

Cretins. Gerardo rode with the

Cretins the other night and into

the early hours o the morning.

Aboard a variety o bicycle types

mountain bikes, cruisers, low-

riders, fxed gears, tall bikes, road

bikes, custom-built bikes and

others150 riders dressed in a

wild array o outfts took to the

streets o San Diego or a pedal-

powered party on wheels.

her upbringing and interests. My

dad was a minister, so I grew up

around religion. But my religion is

my arts and my passions, and one

o those is sewing, Erica says. A

but the idea has grown

to leverage action sports

stars, celebrities, musicians

and a diverse group

o designers to bring

breast cancer awareness

to younger generations

through hip, youth-directed

educational programs

and events with an eye

on prevention.

As the ofcial Music For Awareness

director with KAB, Erica travels

much o the year to attend music

tours and events worldwide

promoting the oundations mission.

I pretty much live on a tour bus,

laughs Erica, as she talks about

being on the road

or months at a

time. But the long

hours and hard

work have all been

worthwhile or

this pretty, copper-

haired activist with

kind eyes and an

easy sense o sel-

confdence. My dad always asked

me the top three things I wanted

out o lie. My answer was always,

I want to travel, I want to meet as

many people as I can, and I wantto create art, says Erica. With

KAB, Ive got it all covered and

more in a really cool, un way.

True to her passions, Erica volunteered with the

organization or three years and even quit a paid position

as a product developer with a skateboard company to

pursue her volunteer work with KAB. I wanted to

dedicate all my time to KAB. It involved everything

I ever wanted to do: art, music, travel, people, un

and all or a good cause, says Erica.

When asked about the powerul

motto emblazoned across her chest,

Erica answers, Whatever I do, I

just want someone to be inspired

by it. I have this tattoo to remind

mysel that what I do on a daily

basis is done to beneft others.

body shape, she has leveraged

them as inspiration or the

largely autobiographical songs

she writes with titles such as Hey!

Toughen Up! and Work What

You Got I Its A Little Or A Lot.

These songs are my ammunition

against the trials and tribulations

o the world, declares Candye. I

try to use meaningul words and

positive airmation to write

songs that heal me as I sing them,

and empower others as they hear

them, she explains. Reerring

to a line rom her song, Im The

Toughest Girl Alive, Candye says,

When I sing the line, Im the toughest

girl alive/Ive walked through the

re and Ive survived, the more

times I sing it, the more powerul

it becomes. It heals me as it healsthe listener.

And healing is something Candye

knows quite intimately. Diagnosed with pancreatic

cancer, she recently underwent a major surgery

and long recovery to bounce back with a renewed

spirit and a cancer-ree body.

Fueled by a lietime o overcoming obstacles, Candye taps into her

resulting strength to help others overcome their own hard-

ships. Through the nonprot organization she co-ounded and

acts as spokesperson or, United By Music (UBM), Candye teaches

physically and mentally handicapped people songwriting and stage-

perormance skills to bolster their conidence and celebrate their

unique abilities. United By Music uses the blues as a metaphor to

help special-needs people transcend their daily challenges,

says Candye. UBM has toured the Netherlands and Belgium,

and appeared at the IASSID World Congress (or people with

disabilities) in Cape Town, South Arica, and the World Down

Syndrome Congress in Dublin, Ireland.

Every time we look past our own limitations and the limitations

of those around us, we become a little bit stronger. Music heals,says Candye, with all the authority in the world to make such a claim.

I could sing, says Candye. When I was

being abused at home as a kid, I ound

out I could get attentionkind words and

love rom strangersby singing. I wrote

my rst song when I was 11. Music and

writing gave me condence and a glimpse

o what my lie might be like.

When a career in music seemed impossible,

Candye decided to go to college. Through her

studies, she discovered the blues and unearthed

a passion or a musical tradition rich with

characters similar to hersel. I saw a worldull o large-sized women with colorul pasts

who overcame hardship to celebrate their size

and sexuality, Candye says, talking about her

introduction to women blues

musicians like Dinah Washington,

Big Mama Thornton and Bessie

Smith. Right away she related

to their stories, to their earthy

voices ull o alternating

tones o joy and suering, and

connected with the prevalent

theme o surmounting adversity

that winds its way through

many blues songs.

With a lot o hard work and an overwhelming

desire to succeed, Candye pulled hersel

rom the limiting world she had been born

into, and in her 20s, began a new lie as

a musician. Perorming around L.A., she

caught the attention o a major record label,

and ater recording her rst demo, she

was poised to embark upon a new career

as a country music singer when her pastresuraced to haunt her. When the record

label executives learned o her questionable

history, they dropped her. Agents and

managers encouraged her to lose weight

and completely change her image. She

was heartbroken.
