1. STUDENT CHAPTER OFFIGERS
During the curent academic year, the UMass ITE Student Chapter restructured the officer
position terms to match the calendar yeat as opposed to the academic yezr. This format will
allovr for more consistency and improved operations in the student chapter leadership as it more
closely mirrors the typical academic prograrn for members who typically graduate in January.
Our student chapter officers and members meet monthly to discuss and schedule chapter events.

7. SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT
Follovring the philosophy of the Student Chapter systern within ITE, this chapter works to introduce
studen8 to the transportation profession and supplement their classroom leaming experiences
througlr a mixture of technical and professional evenb. These events are supplemented with real-
world projec6, transportation facfities site visits, outreactS and social events.
i Technical Events
Improving those technical skills outside the realm of university studies helps to better prepare
UMass ITE students for their entrance into the transportation profession.
Resume Workshop
A resume workshop was held during the fall semester of 2A04 on TuesdaR October 12. Ginger
Goldsbury, an employee of the University's Career Development departmeng led the workshop.
Ginger grve a presentation describing the ideal stnrctufe of a resume. She provided her opinions
on what kinds of information should be included what types of language to use, and how to
arrange the information on a single page. The appropriate use of cover pages was also discussed.
In addition, there were questions asked about submitting resurnes online and about interviewing
both over the phone and in person.
Site PIan Technical Sessrbn
On February 23, 2ffi5, Adam Kwartouritz, a transportation
graduate studentwith a background in architecture, held a technical
session on reading site plans. Firsg he discussed different items
found on typical site plans and the types of site plans. He then
analyzed a specific site plan for an elemetrtary school in nearby

Sunderland MA. The school asked our chapter to come up with ideas for designing a student
drop-off/pick-up area. Adam discussed some of the limitations of the site and requirements that
the school had. All who attended were asked to submit their ideas for a design.
Sunderland School Traffic Flow Design
The Student Chapter conducted a site evaluation of pedestrian and trafficcirculation at Sunderland
Elementary School. School officials contacted the student chapter with concems regarding a
number of operational issues that occur during the morning and aftemoon arrival and departure
times. The Student Chapter assembled a research team and conducted a number of site visits.
Information gathered during the site visits was analyzed and used to generate trvo potential
altemative mitigation schemes. During the site visits, not only was special attention paid to the
concerns that the representadves had oudined a number of general observations were also made.
A number of alternatives were generated to address the findings, from both an operational and z
geometric perspective.
Transpo rtation Sem i nar
Each week during the academic year, the student chapter co-hosts a transportation serninar with the
Transportation Engineering graduate prognm on campus. The topics vary widely from roadway
reclamation techniques with cement stabilized bases to transit operations to pricing theory for higlr
occuparicy toll lanes all of which offer students a broad perspective of the transporation profession.
Some of the professionals that have been invited to dre thirty seminars held lzst year include:
Dr. Edward Sullivan - Investigztion of Median Trees in Collisions on Urban and
Suburban Conventional Highways
Gary Ritter - Professional Opportunities at the Volpe Center
Dana Roscoe- The PVPC Plan for the Merrick Memorial CSX Rail Redevelopment

Transportation Rsearch Symposium sponsored by the MAITE and ITS/ Mass
The University of Massachusetts ITE student chapter was a proud participant in the first annual
MAITE and ITS/Mass Transportation Research Symposium held in Czmbridge Massachusetts.
The conference took place on FridaR February 18, 2005 from 9am to 5pm. Doctoral Students
Daniel Dulaski, Kevin Heaslip, Rana Al-Jammal, and Masters Student David Hurwitz presented
their current research interes8 at the symposium. Two tracks of presentations were scheduled,
such that two presentadons were taking place simultaneously throughout the day. During the
scheduled breaks and lunch the UMass ITE, representatives had the opportunity to mingle with
students from MIT, UMass-Lowell, and Northeastern University to exchange ideas and ask
quesflons about the work that had been presented.

to Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut to see how the
casino man€es their daily trafftc and how it accommodates
their customers. The students got a chance to see the ITS
automated valet parking system operations and hovr it actually
works. The valet parking system services approximately 4,000
vehicles per day. The systun encodes barcodes and digiul rrnags of the vehiclm along vith pertinent
information nto a daa"base to farthtate retrieval and help limit frardulent damage claims. The mernbers
in attendance were inspirited by the complocity and engrreering involved in institutional parking.
i Projects
Second only to academic work, real world experience is the most important asset a student can
bring to a potential employer. This chapter partners with the community and local engineering
firms to offer labor for transportation related studies.
Town of AmhersVAmherst College
The ITE Student Chapter performed data collection for the
Town of Amherst in May and September of 2004. The data

Similar to the traffrc calming project that was perFormed on
Route 9, officials at Amherst College were also concemed with
pedestrian safety on Route 116 in Amherst. The student chapter
performed data collection, througlr traditional methods
(automatic taff,c recorders) and used video cameras to record
pedestrian compliance at tear-by crosswalks. Members of the
student chapter arnlyzed datz and reported the findings to Amherst College. The data were used to
generate a number of altemative taffrc calmingmeasures on the route.

requested at three intersections for a period of trvelve hours each on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This work was coordinated by the chapter's consultant liaison and was conducted by graduate
student members of ITE.
Tawn of Amherst
In August and September of 2004, the chapter performed an
