Thurs 2nd June SIGNATURE 1ST BIRTHDAY FUTURE GARAGE SPECIAL!

WHISTLA / SUBMERSEMS. ANTHROPE / GILES / KRISPFACE / KAPTIN / BROMANCE / MAXX:ROACH / STEVE FRENCH & LOADS MORE10pm-4am £free entry

It’s been a whole year since Signature began its mission to bring experimental and the future sound of electronic music to Cardiff. Guests have included JAMES BLAKE, SBTRKT, FANTASTIC MR FOX, FALTY DL and MARTYN – and this time we bring you a free entry Future Garage party with two of the most prolific producers in the game!

EATS BEATS & TREATS JUNE 201110

WHISTLA WHISTLA is a name that’s been in the Dubstep scene from the very beginning. For those who don’t know him, he is the man credited as coining the term “Future Garage”, the hybrid garage and dubstep sound tearing up dancefl oors all across the UK at the moment.

CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF?

I’m Whistla. I run Sub.FM and L2S Recordings and play Future Garage music.

HOW DID L2S RECORDINGS COME TOGETHER?

I had started to become disaff ected with Dubstep when it turned all half steppy and then wobbly, and started to look for music that fi tted more with what I wanted to play and make. During this time there was no outlet at all for “diff erent” garage,

normal UKG was pretty non-existent at the time let alone more experimental stuff ! But there were lots of producers in the same boat as me who had a similar aesthetic so I thought why not put a label together that focussed on Future Garage and L2S was born.

WHY DIGITAL ONLY, HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED PRESSING VINYL?

Th ere are a few reasons for this. Firstly in my opinion underground music moves so fast that when putting out vinyl by the time the

release is in shops its usually at least 6 months old. With digital, the label can be fresh and up to the minute. It also means we can put out a release every 2 weeks and really move the scene forward.

WHAT MAKES AN L2S RECORDINGS TRACK, AND HOW DO YOU FIND THE ARTISTS FOR YOUR LABEL?

Any number of things, primarily it must have some degree of garage swing, that shuffl e that makes your feet want to move. Th ere is no set

Page 11: Eats, Beats & Treats - June 2011

VENUE: 10 Feet Tall LOCATION: 11a - 12 Church Street, Cardiff WEB: www.10feettallcardiff .com

www.eatsbeatsandtreats.com 11

criteria I follow when signing tracks, they just need to be part of the FG aesthetic, fresh and exciting. We fi nd artists in all sorts of ways - hearing a random tune in a rave, browsing Youtube, Soundcloud etc

IS THERE ANYTHING IN THE PIPELINE AT THE MOMENT THAT’S REALLY EXCITING YOU?

I’ve had a stream of releases over the past few weeks on various labels which has been a very exciting time, some of

them are: Darlings Of Th e Tripstream (L2S), Mike Hindle - Sleep Paralysis (Whistla Remix), Needle (Dual Signal), GSUB - All I Want (Whistla Remix). We also have a load of exciting things coming on L2S including a BunZer0 and Juakali release, Jup1ter’s forthcoming E.P, new material from M2J as well as loads of new artists debuting!

YOU’VE BEEN CREDITED WITH COMING UP WITH THE TERM ‘FUTURE GARAGE’ - WHERE DO

YOU SEE THE SCENE GOING NOW?

Future Garage is still in its infancy, there is still a lot more to come. As it grows and takes in more infl uences branches will break out into there own areas and even more scenes will be born. Right now it’s early days but the support has been immense and lots set to grow more and more!

FEED THE DJ8pm-12am £free entry

FEED THE DJ is a completely new concept. No longer do you have to sit and listen to what the DJ wants to play. You now Feed Th e DJ. Any style of music is cool, it’s all about YOU. You give the DJ a memory stick of tunes before 8pm (at least an hour’s worth), you book a timeslot (fi rst come fi rst served), the DJ plays your tunes for the hour, during which time you and your party get drinks promos for that hour. Th e DJ mix is then polished, uploaded online the next day, and you’re given instructions to download your own personal mix.
