Step 2

The floral base coat. Now take a small flat brush and paint in the elements. If you refer to the First image in this PDF you will get some reference in regards to the rough order of where to place the flowers. But there is no wrong way to do this step just try to make sure when the flora is all in, there is consistency in regards to spacing, and be careful not to be to symmetrical. You want the design to be a little ‘busy and sporadic’.

Step 1

Painting the background. Into a deep well plastic palette squeeze out some Titanium White, Turquoise, Monastral Cerulean and Monasteral Green all in the Dimension Series Acrylic. Onto each colour squeeze a little bit of Acrylic Retarder to the ratio of 1 part medium to 5 parts paint. With a 50 mm wide artists brush lay a thin coat of White over the entire surface. While this is still wet dip the corner of the brush into the Turquoise and then the Cerulean and paint in the left side of the canvas. Now dip the brush into the Green and paint in the right hand side. Clean the brush and then smoothly blend the two tones so the transition is smooth. Let this dry.

The step to add retarder isoptional but it does make

the blending easier. This is because it keeps the paintopen for longer. This way

one isn't trying to dragpartialy dry paint.

Step 3

The topcoat. Squeeze out the colours you wish to use into a round plastic palette. You can use what ever colours you like, in fact I always encourage this. If you want to use the same colours as me, lay out these colours:Flesh Tint Orange RedFast Light Yellow BurgundyLight Green Olive GreenLavender Cobalt BluePink PurpleIn to each colour add the same amount of water and mix.

There is no real right or wrong colours to use in this step but the basic order of colours is to first lay the stem in with Light Green and into this drop your chosen colours. Do the same with the flower buds. While the paint is still wet use a pencil to drag the paint to suggest fine petals coming out from the end of each bud.

It is very important to havethe paint mixed with the correctamount of water so that it is very

fluid. The ratio is 1:1. This way the pigment will

consolidate a lot easier whenit is dropped in to another

puddle of paint.

Step 4

Adding the flower petals. Let us now turn our attention to the petals of the flowers. Use the small flat brush for this and lay the petals emitting out from the base of each flower. Use lots of paint to get that impasto feel.
