LIFE IS LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE (Author Unknown)

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university

professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of

coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some

expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the

nice looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.

While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your

problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more

expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was

coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing

each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee. The jobs, money and position in society are the cups.

They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor

change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not

the cups! The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of

everything. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Thank you for using your Kroger cards, obtained from the Basket Ministry during the NMI convention, to support the Basket Ministry in Corbin. The

Basket Ministry is a Church of the Nazarene recognized Compassionate Ministry Center. In October, a record 223 families were ministered to with 8 giving their hearts to Christ. In November, that record was broken when 303 families were assisted! Need to obtain more Kroger cards or more information about the Basket

Ministry? Contact Lorie—606.215.6285 or [email protected] All

donations to the Basket Ministry are tax deductible.

Thank you for your generous giving to the World Evangelism Fund through the Thanksgiving Offering and Faith Promise. Your faithfulness provides support for over 700 missionaries

around the world. This holiday season as you gather with your family, remember to pray for our missionaries who are away from their families.

Recognize, Recognize, and Recognize

Have you ever heard the saying “What gets acknowledged gets repeated?” I personally have noticed this to be true. John Maxwell says “Recognition involves indentifying and reinforcing positive work performance.” Its basic premise is that people want to be acknowledged and valued for their contributions to the organization.” What would happen if we just begin to recognize positive performance in our churches. For example, what would happen if we wrote a note to the little boy or girl who is faithful to bring their Bible to church each Sunday. Everyone seems to love to get a hand written note out of the mail especially kids! What about the adult in Sunday School who hasn’t missed their Sunday School class in months, when was the last time you recognized them? What about the one in church you can always count on to do whatever needs done, have you recognized them? Here are five general principles of recognition to keep in mind .

1. Make it personal, some would rather be recognized quietly while some would find it nice to be recognized in front of

others. Everyone is different, personalize the recognition to the person. 2. Make it timely, don’t wait, the sooner after the event to

be recognized the better.

Evang. & Church Growth (cont.) 3. Make it specific, Don’t just say good job, but be specific for example say “Good job by being so involved in Sunday school, attending 8 Sundays in a row and participating in discussion!” 4. Make it proportional, Some things done might need more significant recognition than others by providing a gift/recognition that is proportional. 5. Make it sincere, let them know they are really appreciated. Look them in the eyes and shake their hand!

Quick ideas for recognition may include: have Sunday School Teachers start class with some specific recognition to boost Sunday School, make recognition a habit by recognizing someone at every service, do hand written notes, offer public praise as appropriate, recognize others on bulletin boards/facebook, recognize individual teachers for growth and entire classes as group recognition, recognize birthdays, encourage classes or groups to create awards, inform pastor of significant achievements of others in the church that can be recognized, give chocolate, take someone to dinner, call and just say thank-you! Finally, just be creative and recognize! Remember a quote by Charles Lauer “Whether in business or our personal lives, treating people well always pays off.” Lets recognize EKD as we have some amazing people in our churches doing amazing things for God!! Good luck and have fun with it!

THE SEASON OF JOY!

A popular Christmas song entitled, “Deck the Halls” has a line reminding us that this is the season to be jolly. However, for some people, Christmas is a time when they feel anything by jolly. I read about one counseling group who stated that calls for help go up 40 percent during the Christmas season. We sing about a “White Christmas,” while for many it is a “Blue Christmas.” Some of the leading causes of depression this time of year are separation from loved ones. My Dad told me his loneliest night was during the Korean War when he stood guard all Christmas Eve. We also know the financial pressures many feel at Christmas is astounding. I recently saw someone in the store and asked how they were faring. She simply bowed her head and wept, telling me it was rough being a single mom this time of year. If somehow we could look through all the Christmas traditions and activities and see the real meaning of Christmas, it would help many of us. Now, we all love Santa Claus, exchanging gifts, and all the holiday activities. But Christmas is not about these things. It’s all about the Lord Jesus1 The shepherds discovered that Christmas is a season to be jolly. In Luke Chapter 2, the angel said unto them, “ Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall to to all people.” The first Christmas was a time of celebration. It was a time of rejoicing God! Yes, Christmas is the season to be jolly! Luke 2 says, “For unto you is born this day as Savior, Christ the Lord.” There is no bad news at Christmas, it is a message of peace and hope. Where could there by a greater message of good tidings? What could be a message of joy than that a Savior has come? Forget the bank account. Pull out all those groans from your prayers. Shove in some hallelujahs! Jesus our salvation has come! This was the faith of our fathers and I trust it is yours. By: Mel Bradley The Christ Child changed the world forever and He can do

the same for us. May we, like the shepherds, leave our

fields...or whatever keeps us busy….and pause to worship

God’s precious Christmas Gift: His Son, Jesus!

Wishing you a beautiful Christmas.
