Easter traditions in the
Czech Republic
Easter is the beginning of the spring and it is also a Christian feast. Animals have babies in the spring and at Easter people celebrate the new life that´s why the symbol of Easter is an egg.
Easter eggs
The typical symbol ofEaster in the Czech
Republicare decorated eggs.We colour eggs or we putstickers on them, too.
Wecan also put them into
lace.
Boys come to the homes
of girls, recite a poem and
theyget a decorated egg and
ribbon. They also get chocolate eggs which
they eat afterwards.
Plaited willow cane
On Monday morning boys usually visit girls and sing carols. Then boys lightly whip girls with plaited willow canes to wish them freshness and good health.
Girls give boys painted Easter eggs and sweets. If the boys arrive after twelve o´clock, the girls
can pour water on them. People say once every four years girls can also go
and sing carols and whip boys.
Easter food
At Easter people bake a chocolate or vanilla sheep shaped cake. Grandmothers bake a typical Easter cake.We usually have it for breakfast. Then we have roast duck, cabbage and dumplings for lunch.
Besides the Easter cake and sheep shaped cake we enjoy lots of other sweets at Easter, for example chocolate eggs and chocolate rabbits.
