Easter: The Celebration of Hope by Pastor Scott

We conclude our Lenten journey of rehabilitation hope on Easter morning.

All of the personal and communal issues we uncovered and discovered along the way as we explored the image of Rehab:

(MORTALITY WILDERNESS INTERVENTION PROGRAM RECOVERY, AND PROMISE) somehow look different when held to the light of Christ.

Consider these words of the gospel of John chapter 1 verses 3-5:

    Everything was created through him;

    nothing—not one thing!—

    came into being without him.

What came into existence was Life,

and the Life was Light to live by.

    The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;

the darkness couldn't put it out.

    (The Message, Eugene Peterson)

We gain new perspective in the eternal hope that all shall be well and that nothing is too great for God to overcome, “the darkness couldn’t put it out.” Even death does not have the final word!

This coming Easter season we celebrate the Life-Light blazing. Don’t miss out on our Easter celebration of hope!

    Blessings,

    Pastor Scott

“Thank you”s to: Barbara McDonald, attendance tracking

Katie, attendance tracking – Sunday School

Dave Richards and crew for family meals and for those who attend and keep the program self supporting.

For all those “kitchen mice” spending time helping Dave Richards with family meals and hardly being seen. Also for those whose donations of food that just “appear” weekly.

We have had 2 people who have filled out their attendance cards weekly and have had perfect attendance this year. Quite an accomplishment with the flu season hitting us hard! No names, but a hint to one – teachers appreciate perfect attendance!!

Please fill out your cards weekly, they are important to us in many ways. Newbies, please fill out the contact information as well.

The Home Builders adult Sunday School class challenged the congregation to assist in donating to the Solon Community School to help reduce the deficit in the school lunch program. Thanks to all who gave generously— we were able to donate

    Mental Health Awareness—NAMIWalks

Date: Saturday, April 28 Location: Terry Trueblood Recreation Area Iowa City Check In: 8:30 am Walk Starts: 10:00 am

United Methodists around the world are called to be in covenant relationship with persons with mental illness and their families. To further advocate and provide support for mental health awareness we have formed a team to participate in this year’s NAMI-Walks. The team is called the “Solon United Methodist Wesley Walkers.” NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization. It provides support, education and advocacy for millions of Americans affected by mental illness. As such, it is a lifeline for many people and families who need a place to turn—NAMI gives them help and hope. This year’s walk is being held Saturday (April 28) at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City.

Please consider joining us on this walk, and/or donating to the team through the NAMI website. We have set a fundraising goal of $750 but would love to raise much more, as all donations directly supports the mission of NAMI. We will also have a sign-up table at Fellowship time on Sunday April 15 and 22.

For more information, go to https://www.namiwalks.org/team/20076 The link will take you to a page that contains details of the walk as well as links to register (“join our Team”) and to donate to this event (“support”).

If you have any questions, just let Kris Frisbie know at 624-6024. Thank you for your support.

  • How will you Celebrate Earth Day—April 22, 2018?

While the bright radiant sun in centre glows, The earth in annual motion round it goes; At the same time on its own axis reels, And gives us change of seasons as it wheels. –The 1793 Old Farmer’s Almanac

As beneficiaries of this divine creation, we should care for the earth, be wise stewards over it, and preserve it for future generations. At SUMC we’ll be getting together to beautify our stretch of Highway 1. The Adopt a Highway (AAH) program allows our church a way to transform our world. AAH activities reduce litter along highways, enhance the environment, beautify roadsides, and build community support for anti-litter and highway beautifi-cation programs, and provide a chance to enjoy the outdoors with friends.

On Sunday, April 22nd at 1:00 pm meet in the Family Life Center parking lot to carpool. We will work till 3:00 pm. To find out more, talk to Pastor Scott. Rain date April 29th.

    a conversation with Pastor Scott.

Looking ahead for next school year: We will be in need of Sunday school teachers for next year! We will continue to use teams of teachers at each grade level. Trailblazers meet every Wednesday from 3:20 to 5:15 at the FLC. (Note the start and ending times have changed slightly). The Trailblazers spring program began on March 21 with a focus on “The Easter Garden” as a Lenten event where we hear stories of Holy Week and prepare table decorations for a final celebration on April 25 as we end the program. We are discovering how each Holy Week event unfolded – Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday - the Last Supper and Garden of Gethsemane, the Tomb and the Cross, and Resurrection Sunday (Easter) - as we experience the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice and God’s love for us and then learn how we can care about others as we are called to do. children can still register to participate, just go to the website:

  • On April 15th we will celebrate an important moment in the faith journey of thirteen youth in our church, - - Confirmation.

Our Wesleyan tradition is clear in insisting that every person must accept for himself or herself the Christian journey of faith. Our par-ents and the church can take us only so far. There comes a point when the rest is up to us. It is the reason we still have the practice of confirmation.

At its best confirmation prepares us to make the decision of faith for ourselves. After our teachers of the faith (parents, Sunday School teachers, pastors, mentors) give us the experiences and the support we need to make this decision, then it is up to us as individuals.

I am a believer that confirmation is a moment when we work with what we’ve got, instead of wishing for something else. Confirmation is not the end after all. Confirmation is not the final destination for our youth, it is an important mo-ment in the decision to join in the Christian journey. It is one moment of com-mitment, but we all need to continue in making that commitment long after Con-firmation Sunday.

I hope you can join us April 15th in supporting our 2018 Confirmation Class as they make their commitments.

On Sunday, March 25, our SPRC Chair, Sue Wilkinson, provided the answer to the question we’ve all been asking —

Who will become the next Lead Pastor at Solon United Methodist Church? Her announcement is below:

I’m pleased to announce that Bishop Laurie Haller has appointed Rev. Ken Ferguson as pastor for our congregation.

Ken has served for the past 8 years at Valley UMC in West Des Moines. Prior to that he served for 9 years at Carroll.

Ken is originally from Ames. After graduation from Ames High School, he joined the Marines and served on the USS Guam. Following the military he attended DMACC, Iowa State and then seminary at the University of Dubuque where he met his wife, Chrisa, who has also served as a United Methodist pastor.

They have three married daughters, Meredith, Naomi and Auna.

Ken and Chrisa are looking forward to life in a small town, although our church is actually larger than Ken’s church in West Des Moines.

The Fergusons should be arriving in late June. SPRC will provide more details as they become available.

Questions - contact Sue Wilkinson or any SPRC member (Cathy Boggs, Bill Musgrave, Jim Leighton and Art McPheron).

    SPRC News

  • The Solon United Methodist church relies on financial support of its members to function. There is no other money source. Just like any entity that has a budget, the church receives income (donations) that pay expenses such as salaries, heat, lights, snow removal etc…

SUMC income comes in two forms, pledges and faith giv-ing:

Pledges are based off monies that the congrega-tion indicates to the church they will be able to contribute for the following year. This allows the church to plan a budget for the upcoming year, assuming pledges turn into donations and that promise to the church is fulfilled.

Faith giving is the difference between what is pledged for the upcoming year versus last year’s actual expenses. It is required when pledged dol-lars do not equal planned expenses.

Most churches have members of their congregation that do not submit a formal pledge, but continue to give money each year. For the SUMC, this faith giving is a sig-nificant amount of money, nearly $13,000/month. That can be compared to pledged giving of just over $15,000/month. Another way to state this is nearly 50% of SUMC income is not pledged, but assumed will be provided each year. As I mentioned, faith giving has always been a part of the budget and most every year this money is provided and we are able to meet our financial obligations. This allows us to gather in faith at the SUMC each week.

Our required income for each month in order to cover all financial obligations averages roughly $29,500/month.

What is concerning for this year’s budget is that faith giving will need to be at a higher level than normal as our pledged contributions are down significantly. Roughly 40 more SUMC families did not submit a pledge card this year versus the previous year. In 2016, pledges were $18000/month, in 2015 they were $19,000 (see table at top of next column)

SUMC is not off to a strong start fiscal start for 2018. As you can see from the graph below, the total income for the months of January and February is not keeping up with our expenses, and that’s without paying apportion-ments or insurance. Our Paid Expenses have been under budget for both months, however, we are yet to pay a significant insurance bill (due in March) that will bring us back to our average monthly expense.

BOTTOM LINE, if you pledged to the church this year, please keep current with your pledges and on behalf of SUMC and the finance committee, thank you very much. If you have not pledged, please consider a financial contribution to the church so financial planning can be more feasible and stable and bills can be paid. If you don’t pledge but give money yearly, now is a good time to contribute, and on behalf of the SUMC finance committee, we thank you too!!

    Year Pledged amount/month

    2015 $19,000

    2016 $18,000

    2017 $19,000

    2018 $15,000
