Easter Sunday Celebration

At St. James by-the-Sea we welcome and care for all people at every stage of their spiritual journey, and we seek to create opportunities for faith in God

to be discovered, renewed and put into action.

Welcome! Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, despite the

constraints we are all under, we can still gather as one to worship. You will find everything you need to participate here in this bulletin, so do please join in with the prayers and singing. Leave comments to let us know what you think and engage with us over the coming week at www.SJBTS.org. May God be with us now as we center ourselves in prayer and worship.

The Rev’d Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector

The First Lesson Colossians 3:1-4 o if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,

for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Second Lesson John 20:1-10

arly on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and

the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Sermon The Rev’d Dr. Mark Hargreaves

Anthem Christ the Lord is risen again Philip Stopford (b. 1977)

Christ the Lord is risen again, Christ hath broken every chain.

Hark, angelic voices cry, singing evermore on high, Alleluia!

He who gave for us his life, who for us endured the strife,

is our Paschal Lamb to-day; we too sing for joy, and say Alleluia!

He who bore all pain and loss comfortless upon the cross,

lives in glory now on high, pleads for us, and hears our cry: Alleluia!

He who slumbered in the grave is exalted now to save;

now through Christendom it rings that the Lamb is King of kings. Alleluia!

Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed, Christ, thy ransomed people feed;

take our sins and guilt away: let us sing by night and day Alleluia!

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect for Easter Day

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

In union, O Jesus, with the faithful of your Church this day, we offer you praise and thanksgiving for the redemption won for us in your life, death, and resurrection. We present to you our hearts, souls, minds, and bodies with the earnest desire that we may always be united to you. We receive you into our hearts, O risen Lord, and ask you to dwell in us in the fullness of your strength, so that, being made one with you, we may serve you all our days. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed! At this the heavenly choir of angels rejoice, the earth exults, and the Church is glad. Therefore, we join in prayer for all God’s people, praying that all may know the benefits of the paschal victory of Jesus Christ.

Almighty and merciful God, we give you thanks for your Church, united in Christ, and for all people everywhere who know and love you. We offer special thanks this day for the people of St. James and the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. Guide us to know and do your will, that by our lives, we may show forth your love. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We give you thanks for the women who encountered the empty tomb and for all those who found healing through the Risen Christ. Give wholeness, healing, and peace to all those in need: the sick, and especially those suffering from COVID-19, the poor, the unemployed, the fearful, the struggling, the lonely, the hungry, the dying, for all those on the St. James prayer list, and for those who are bereaved. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We give you thanks for all those who work in essential jobs and who sustain the fabric of our common life. Help us to be mindful of them and their sacrifice. Protect them and keep them and their families in good health in body, mind, and spirit. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We give you thanks for those who have gone before us in faith and now rest from their labors, awaiting the resurrection to eternal life. May we, like them, remain faithful to the end and share in the fruits of the victory of Christ, the paschal lamb, who takes away the sins of the world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Hear our prayers on behalf of all those for whom we now pray – silently or aloud - and give us peace, for the sake of your Son, the risen and exalted Lord. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
