He Is Risen!

If there weren't enough reasons to celebrate the spring season, all of the holidays and special days of remembrance that take place during this time could provide reason enough. In addition to budding flowers and warmer weather, spring ushers in several major (and minor) holidays that can provide reasons to get together with friends and family.

Celebrate special Spring days* Passover: A time of

reflection for Jewish peo-ple.

* Easter: The holiest day of the year for Chris-tians.

* April Fool's Day: Celebrate April by fooling a few friends.

* Arbor Day: Plant a tree on a warm, spring day.

* Earth Day: Pay hom-age to the planet with some environmental ac-tivities.

* Cinco de Mayo: Cele-brate the Mexican victory over the French army.

* Administrative Pro-fessionals Day: Show that coworker you appre-ciate his or her work.

* Mother's Day: Give thanks to Mom for all she's done through the years.

* Armed Forces Day: Honor the military per-sonnel who keep the coun-try safe.

By Craig W. Armstrong

Spring has sprung and that means the Easter Bunny will be visiting. He is a beloved charac-ter who delivers colored eggs, jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and holiday cheer. While this bunny is famous, he is not alone in the world of renowned rab-bits. Here’s a look at some of the best-of-the-best bunnies.

Bunnies are a staple in litera-ture, and Peter Rabbit is one of the most famous. Peter came to life in 1902 thanks to author Be-atrix Potter. Peter’s love for veg-etables was his downfall. You see Peter had a problem with portion control and decided he needed to sneak into Mr. McGregor’s garden. In the end, Peter found himself with no clothing and a cold. Now you want to read the book, don’t you?

Another literary bunny is the Velveteen Rabbit. This is a heart-wrenching tale about a stuffed rabbit that just wants to be real. But it is not until he cries real tears that his dream is fulfilled. It’s a story about finding your place in the world.

The world of animation has brought us many unforgettable

floppy-eared friends. One of the cutest is Thumper. Thumper is a character in the Disney classic, Bambi. Probably remembered best for the way he thumped his foot, the bunny was also enter-taining to watch on the ice.

A bunny with a time manage-ment problem is the White Rab-bit from Alice in Wonderland. This bunny is not shy about his tardiness problem, exclaiming, “I’m late, I’m late,” to anyone who would listen. He caught the attention of Alice, who proceed-ed to follow him down the rabbit hole, thus beginning her adven-ture in Wonderland.

Another animated rabbit that first came to life in the pages of a book is Roger Rabbit. To say Roger is high-strung is an un-derstatement. Working to clear his name in the 1988 animated film Who Framed Roger Rab-bit, this bunny became a fan fa-vorite. Mixing the world of real life and cartoons, the film was a huge success and made Roger a household name. But, if you are talking about a bunny that everyone knows, there is only one—Bugs.

Bugs Bunny began his legend-ary career in 1940 and never

looked back. He is the star of the Looney Tunes gang and has shared the screen with Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, just to name a few. Bugs has seen countless incarnations over the years and is still loved by mil-lions of children to this day. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Bugs is a bunny that can do it all and is not afraid to dress up like a girl when he has to. Ask almost anyone who is famous for saying, “What’s up, Doc?,” and they will say Bugs.

All of these rabbits have made their mark on history, but how many of them bring you candy? The Easter Bunny was introduced to America by German settlers in the 1700s. Initially deliver-ing eggs as a sign of rebirth like spring, the Easter Bunny soon started to hand out treats, treats that got better and more sugar based over the years. It is doubt-ful that today’s children would enjoy hardboiled eggs as much as they do marshmallow chicks and chocolate bunnies. Easter is a time of celebration and family, but let’s not forget who brings us all the great candy that ruins our Easter dinner.

Rejoice, Christ Has Risen

Even the smallest of Easter egg hunters- Showed up decked in full winter garb to search for eggs during the Easter Egg Hunt at the Craig, MO, Park on Saturday, March 23.

Easter Egg Hunt held in brisk conditionsThe Friends of Craig group held an Easter Egg Hunt for the children of the Craig, MO, community

on Saturday, March 23. Despite wintery conditions that afternoon, a large group of children and parents braved the weather for the hunt. The children gathered over 1,000 candy stuffed eggs that were ‘hidden’ in the Craig park.

Big bags of candy stuffed Easter eggs- Were gathered during a Friends of Craig, MO, Easter Egg Hunt on Satur-day, March 23.

Baskets of brightly colored Easter eggs- Were filled to the top after a wintery egg hunt on Saturday afternoon, March 23, in Craig, MO.

Coloring Easter eggs, hiding them and hunting for them has been a holiday staple for genera-tions. Every now and then, Eas-ter celebrants desire something different to make this year's fun unique.

There are several different ways to celebrate Easter that don't have to involve hidden eggs. Try out these ideas for some enjoyment.

* Pin the tail on the Easter bunny: Make a variation on the donkey game by drawing (or buying) a picture of a bunny. Glue some cotton balls to a piece

Creative alternatives to Easter Egg Hunts

of cardboard to make tails, using double-sided tape on the back. Spin kids around and have them try to attach the tail

* Treasure hunt: Instead of children racing around to find hidden eggs, parents can draw up a treasure map that takes the children, via different clues, to a special treasure hidden. It could be a chocolate bunny or a basket of treats.

* Who Am I? Print Easter-related phrases onto cards that then attach to a headband or hat with a small piece of tape or Vel-cro-type material. The person has to guess the word (without see-ing what it is) by the clues others provide.

* Easter crafts: Scour the craft store for wooden eggs, crosses, baskets, and similar items. Pur-chase colored pencils or water colors and encourage children to decorate their items. This can keep children busy after the meal when adults want to socialize.

* Relay races: Enjoy any num-ber of outside games (weather permitting), including relay races with the family.

* Fashion show: Little girls can model their Easter bonnets and frilly dresses for a family audi-ence.

* Lucky duck: Parents can cre-ate the carnival game at home by marking a painted dot under a few of several rubber ducks that are afloat in a bucket, bathtub or kiddie pool. The children who pick a duck with a mark on the bottom win a prize.

Easter is a time when Christian families gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious cus-toms abound on Easter, but a number of secular tradi-tions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the coloring of Easter eggs.

Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring. Con-sumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs this year.

* Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store and purchase wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated however you de-sire. The wooden eggs will be durable and can be stored away for use each and every year. Because they are made of wood, a naturally recycla-ble material, they are easy on the environment.

* Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vege-table juices -- even packaged

Clever alternatives to traditional dyed Easter eggs

drink mixes -- can be used to tint Easter eggs in vari-ous colors. Because you're controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use.

* Experiment with papier mache. This ancient paper crafting technique uses re-cycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday.

* Purchase corn starch eggs. Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials to children's craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material. When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for compost-ing. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water.

* Make edible eggs. Tra-ditional Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting eggs out of meringue as well.

* Dough eggs: Have the children get out their favor-ite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can pur-chase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After drying, the eggs should be

ready to paint.* Drained eggs: Those in-

terested in using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

Every year, the White House holds an Easter egg roll for kids age 12 and younger. Activities range from storytelling to games and egg rolling, of course. The Easter bunny also arrives to greet the crowd.

Many people believe First Lady Dolley Madison started the egg roll. She had heard about the Egyptian custom of egg rolling and planned her own event to take place on the Monday after Easter on the grounds of the Capitol building.

Egg rolling on the Capitol grounds continued until 1878 when Congress decided there had been too much damage to the grounds and passed a law against it. President William Howard Taft moved the event to the White House lawn and egg rolling has been held there ever since, except during times of war and bad weather.

8 Easter Egg Hunt Ideas1. Treasure Egg Hunt: Make a map of the your house and/or yard area. Draw a line on the map

that the hunter is sup-posed to follow to reach the prize, a big plastic egg with a surprise Easter gift in it.

2. Secret Egg Hunt:Place messages in the eggs for big prizes. Exam-ples might be an ice cream treat at a local shop, play putt putt golf, movie tick-ets or money for the Red Box, a bowling pass, fa-vorite place to eat coupon, etc.

3. Math Egg Hunt:Place numbers in each egg and the person with the highest number after adding them all up wins an extra little prize.

4. Golden and Silver Egg Hunt:Place money in the golden or silver eggs, and candy in colored eggs. Place a golden and a silver egg among the other Easter eggs and hide them, with the golden and silver eggs being hid the hardest.

5. Name Egg Hunt:Write the kids’ names on the eggs and whoever finds their name first wins a special prize.

6. Hide the Easter bas-ket Egg Hunt:Hide the kids’ Easter bas-kets and set clues in the eggs for them to find the basket.

7. Nighttime Egg Hunt:May work well with older kids, or smaller kids can have adults with them. Make sure the area is a safe place. Glow sticks can be placed in the eggs, or hide light colored eggs. and grab a flashlight and go on a hunt to find the eggs under the moon and stars. A previous count of the eggs will make the hunt easier.

8. Inside Egg Hunt:Hide eggs in the house and the kids find them. Also can hide candy for first thing Easter morning, and when the kids wake up, they can begin to find and collect can-dy. For fairness, candy can be hidden in different rooms and assigned to kids.

Eggs are symbolic of Easter. They’recolored, decorated, hidden, and used indecorative items for the home. The one

caveat to eggs is that they are quite fragile, andeven hard-boiled eggs can be rendered uselesswith one accidental drop or blow. Instead ofrelying on breakable eggs for Easter fun, consider making stronger ones instead.Symbolic of rebirth and renewal, eggs are anintegral part of setting the scene come earlyspring. Selecting a less fragile material to createthe looks of real eggs can increase the potentialfor using them in many different applications. One of the easiest ways to create harder-to-break eggs is to make them out of clay.Modeling clay is a versatile medium that can beused to make everything from clay eggs tobunny figurines to religious items synonymouswith Easter.A visit to the local craft store or even a chainretailer will likely turn up different clayproducts, which come in a variety of colors. Youcan create pastel-colored clay by mixingprimary colors with white clay if you cannotfind pastel colors in the store. There are two main ways to create egg shapesout of a ball of clay. One way is to roll a ball outof the clay and then roll it vertically betweenyour hands to make the smaller end of the egg.Another is to use a plastic egg as a mold andstuff the clay inside. Pop open the top of theplastic egg and then gently tap the clay out. You don’t even have to color your clay if youdon’t feel up to it. You may also use white clay,

allow to dry, and then paint them using acrylicpaints. Mix two clay colors together beforeforming into an egg to achieve a marbled effect. Also think about adding embellishments likestickers, ribbon, bows, and flowers to the eggs, much in the same way you would decorate realeggs. To display clay eggs in a vase or to attach to aspring wreath, thread a dowel or piece offlorist’s wire into the egg before allowing toharden completely. Then attach them as needed. Clay eggs can be used in place of regular eggsin just about every traditional egg use — exceptof course for making egg salad! Plus, makingclay eggs is a fun and safe craft for all ages.

Eggs in a NestHere’s a creative way to show off clay eggs.

Materials:2 to 3 eggs depending on sizeMoss or raffia RibbonFlorist wire

Weave or shape the raffia or moss into a nestshape large enough to fit the clay eggs. Secureas necessary with the wire. Decorate with bowsmade out of ribbon.Place the eggs into the nest and display wheredesired.

About one-third of the planet, orroughly 2.1 billion people, areChristians. Each spring, this

large subset of the population celebratesthe religious miracle that is the death andresurrection of Jesus Christ. The Lenten season is one of the holiesttimes of the year on the Christiancalendar. This is a period of 40 days andnights that begins with Ash Wednesdayat the beginning of Lent and laststhrough Easter Sunday. Many Christianscelebrate Easter but may not know thesignificance or meaning behind certaindays on the Lenten calendar. Here is aprimer on the Lenten season forChristians and non-Christians alike.

Ash WednesdayIn the Roman Catholic Church, AshWednesday marks the first day of Lent, the season when one prepares for theresurrection of Jesus Christ. AshWednesday always falls 46 days beforeEaster and will vary according to thecalendar. Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day ofObligation, which means parishionersare expected to attend mass to mark thebeginning of the holy season. During themass, celebrants receive ashes in theform of a cross on their foreheads. Theashes are made from burning the blessedpalm fronds from last year’s PalmSunday mass.In ancient times ashes were worn as asymbol of sorrow, repentance andacknowledgment of sins. Nowadays, ashes allow Christians to humbly displayan outward sign that they are aware oftheir shortcomings and are cleansingtheir souls in the preparation for thecelebration of Christ’s resurrection.

Palm SundayPalm Sunday marks the beginning ofHoly Week and it is a day of obligationwhen Christians attend mass, and theyreceive fronds of blessed palms.

Occurring a week before Easter, PalmSunday commemorates the entry ofJesus into Jerusalem to celebrate thePassover. The gospels record the arrivalof Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks andpalm branches on the street and shouted“Hosanna to the Son of David” and“Blessed is He who comes in the nameof the Lord” to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King.

Holy ThursdayHoly Thursday is the Thursdaypreceding Easter Sunday. It marks JesusChrist’s last supper with his disciples. His act of breaking bread and offering itas His “body” and sharing wine as His“blood” has become an integral part ofthe Christian mass. It is representative ofChrist giving up His life in place of oursins.

Good FridayGood Friday is also known as BlackFriday but should not be mistaken withthe post-Thanksgiving Black Friday. It isthe day that Jesus had to march to hiscrucifixion site while carrying anextremely heavy wooden cross. Jesuswas mocked, spit on, tortured, and forcedto wear a crown of thorns during Hisjourney after being arrested by Judas andthen suffering at the hands of PontiusPilate. After being nailed to the cross atHis palms and ankles, Jesus suffered forsix hours before He died. Jesus died onthe cross for the sins of the people.

Easter SundayThe holiest day of the season is EasterSunday. On this day, Jesus rose from Histomb. Mary Magdalene went to the tomband found Jesus missing. Jesus thenapproached her and showed how he wasagain alive. His disciples were shockedat the appearance of his resurrected self, furthering their faith in him as the Sonof God.
