We Exist to Share Christ!

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION about St. Peter’s and its activities, please speak with one of the pastors to arrange an appointment by calling the church office at 920-743-4431.

Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Good morning and a blessed Easter to all of you! Welcome to this celebration of Jesus’ resurrection! We consider it a privilege to worship the living Lord with you this morning. We pray that the message of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead fills your heart with faith in Christ and confidence in His gracious gifts of forgiveness and eternal life.

SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP:

Dear Lord Jesus, because of Your sacrifice, we can spend eternity with You. There is no pain You cannot conquer, no hurt You cannot heal, and no life You cannot transform. Your death and resurrection proved that nothing is impossible for You, and that we are more than conquerors because of You. Today and every day, help us to fix our hearts and our minds on You. Grant that we, who have been raised from the death of sin by Your life-giving Spirit, may worship You in the joy of this glorious news. Amen.

John 20:1-18

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15“Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”

(which means Teacher). 17Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

INVOCATION

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION 1 JOHN 1:8-9

M: Upon the hill the cross now stands empty. Morning light breaks upon the tomb. As we come before our God and King, let us confess our sins.

All: Lord God, I humbly come before You. I confess that I am sinful in my thoughts, words and actions. I daily fail to do what You command, and continually do what You forbid. Lord, I am sorry for my sins. I believe that for the sake of my Lord Jesus Christ, You will have mercy on me.

ABSOLUTION JOHN 20:21-23

M: Rejoice, my dear friends! Jesus, our Risen Savior, has forgiven all your sins. His perfect life and death on the cross made the full payment for your sins. “It is finished,” He declared. By His triumphant resurrection He proved to you and me that we stand before God free of sin and its guilt and shame. Blessing and honor, glory and thanksgiving, power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. He is risen!

C: He is risen, indeed! Alleluia

ANTHEM HEAVENLY HOME by Jonathan B. Atchinson

Arranged by Mary McDonald

No more hunger, no more thirsting, no more weeping, no more tears; No more sin, no more temptation, no more doubt, no more fears. In that home, the Lamb shall find them; He shall lead them on their way. Where the living fount is flowing, and shall wipe all tears away.

No more longing for the morning, no more watching for the day;

No more groping in the darkness, no more mists to clear away. Morning splendors are eternal, for in heaven there is no night,

All unknown are mists and shadows, for the Lamb, He is the Light! No more weariness for pilgrims, no more restless tossings there; No more sorrow, no more sighing, no more watching, no more prayer. Ended every pilgrim’s journey, they have entered into rest. Joys eternal, endless praises! In that homeland of the blest.

Refrain: Heavenly home, happy home; never sigh or sorrow come.

“Alleluia,” songs we raise, joys eternal, endless praise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray. Lord Jesus, God of grace, You have filled our hearts with resurrection joy by Your victory over sin, death, and the grave. With the church of every age, we offer You unending praise, for You have crushed Satan’s head and have removed our guilt forever. You conquered death and opened the gate to eternal life. To You be dominion and praise for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and forever.

THE WORD OF GOD

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

First Scripture Lesson Job 19:23-27 Christ is Risen! Because He Lives We too Shall Rise

23“Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, 24that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! 25I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. 26And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27I myself will see him with my own eyes-- I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!”

M: The Word of our Lord C: Thanks be to God!

Second Scripture Lesson 1 Corinthians 15:51–57 Christ is Risen! Death Has Been Swallowed up in Victory

51Look, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54But once this perishable body has put on imperishability, and this mortal body has put on immortality, then what is written will be fulfilled: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55Death, where is your sting? Grave, where is your victory? 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

M: Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, C: The firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Verse of the Day Psalm 118:24

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia!1

GOSPEL OF THE DAY MATTHEW 28:1-10

Christ is Risen! His resurrection guarantees the victory! Alleluia!

M: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28th chapter. C: Glory be to You, O Lord! 1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 Suddenly, there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, and going to the tomb, he rolled away the stone and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. 4 The guards were so terrified of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here. He has risen, just as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead! And look, he is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him.’ See, I have told you!” 8 They hurried away from the tomb, with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They approached, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go, tell my brothers that they should go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

M: The Gospel of the Lord! C: Praise be to You, O Christ!

1 The days of Lent now behind us, we sing our jubilant Alleluias in praise to our risen Savior. Alleluia is a Hebrew word from the Old Testament meaning “Praise the Lord.”

THE SERMON JOHN 20:1-18

Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy

At the conclusion of the sermon we confess our faith.

STATEMENT OF FAITH AN EASTER CREED

I believe in God my Father, Almighty, Who by His powerful Word created this first day of the week on which my Savior arose.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, my Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; Who suffered under the weight of all my sins on Good Friday and died on the cross to redeem me; Who was made alive again by the Spirit of God, and proclaimed victory when He descended to the spirits in hell.

He rose in triumph on that first Easter, and later ascended into heaven to prepare a place for me; He rules in my heart and Christian life today, and one day will come to take me to live with Him.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, Who has called my by the Gospel to be a member of the Holy Christian Church; Who comforts me with the assurance of God’s forgiveness and will raise me from the dead as Christ rose from the dead on Easter; So that with angels and archangels, I might dwell with my Father, my Savior, my Comforter, in the life everlasting. Amen.

M: O God of peace, who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank and praise You for the mercy You have shown us through His glorious resurrection.

C: Fill all who hear the Easter Gospel this morning with the joy of the resurrection, that they may walk in the newness of life in Christ.

M: In every adversity and trial preserve us. Heal the sick,

C: Defend the weak and vulnerable, especially the aged, those who are hungry, homeless, unemployed, and those who are struggling under the load of troubles and trials.

M: We give thanks for all those who have died and now live with Christ in the triumph of Easter, especially all our faithful departed loved ones.

C: Unite us with them in the hope of the resurrection of the dead.

Special prayers and petitions may follow

M: Hear us, O Father, for the sake of Him who is the firstborn of the dead and is now alive forevermore, Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. It is in His name that we bring this and every prayer to You.

C: Amen.

M: Lord Jesus, remember us in Your kingdom as we pray, All: Our Father in Heaven

Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen.

Ministering to our community: This is a trying time for all. We

encourage you to call your neighbors, check in on them, and see if there is anything they need in which you can help them (getting groceries and essentials, making them meals, etc…) We also encourage you to support local small businesses. If you can order a takeout once a week or buy gift cards to local businesses, which will go far in helping our Sturgeon Bay community weather this storm.

Just a Reminder: if you know of anyone who is ill or needs pastoral

care, please let one of the pastors know. Thank You!

Printers needed Over the years we have been blessed with those

individuals that wanted to serve the Lord but do not want to sit in a meeting. Year ago, Paul Eggert and Bob Johnson printed in a storage room downstairs, later on Wally Peterson and Richard Lindemeyer served as printers in the church office. Over the last few years, it has been Tom and Chris Whipple making the bulletin copies. We are thankful for all those that have served St. Peter’s as printers. Tom and Chris are retiring from printing and so we have the opportunity for someone or two people to be printers. If you are interested, please contact Kari Anderson in the church office to find out the details.

Video and Audio Operators: Do you enjoy working with computers?

Have you ever made a video on your phone? Then St. Peter’s has an opportunity for you! St. Peter’s video/audio broadcast is a vital part of our “sharing Christ” with our community. We are looking for volunteers (age High School on up) to help with the video and audio broadcast. Interested? Come and chat with broadcasters in the Broadcast Room after the 10:05 am service for more information or contact Jim Flinn by email – [email protected]. Thank you!
