Thank you for your interest in my work. This brochure is an introduction to some of my recent projects from a variety of locations, some traditional and some contemporary. I am a glass artist creating stained glass, architectural glass and sculptures for schools, hospitals, theatres and churches throughout the UK. I work closely with local communities to integrate my artwork into the environment, and have won numerous national competitions. I design and project manage all my commissions and work with a variety of specialist fabricators and techniques to create beautiful and timeless art works. TRINITY METHODIST CHURCH

EAST GRINSTEAD

"The Waters of Baptism" is the theme of this glass sculpture and side screens for a new build church

in the heart of Grinstead. Created by silk screen printing ceramic pigments onto toughened glass

double glazed units, the screen doors form part of the building's fabric, and the 5m tall sculpture

is fitted to the wall as a focal point for worship.

ST. GILES CHURCH

MEDBOURNE

These traditional stained glass windows are installed in my local village church. The windows make use of

the vibrant qualities of handmade antique glass, combined with hand painting to create a timeless

artwork.

ST DUNSTANS RC CHURCH

WOKING, SURREY

Two large windows on either side of the main sanctuary of this new build Roman Catholic Church fill the interior with modulated colour and textured light. The windows are on the themes of "Bread of Life" and "Proclaim the

Good News". Images are hand painted, etched and enamelled on three layers of toughened glass, with

antique glass and pencil bevelled glass prisms. Total area 27 m2

JOHN RYLANDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

MANCHESTER

This 11m tall glass sculpture is entitled "TOTEM" and is situated in the new extension to the Grade 1 listed

Manchester University Library. Using a combination of digital printing and bonded handmade antique

glass, the sculpture is back lit with an arrangement of LED lights. The design includes various visual

references to the library's archive collections of important first edition books

RICHARD NEWCOMBE COURT

CAMBRIDGE

14 m2 glass canopy to the main entrance of a Residential Care Home, incorporating hand written letters from local

residents and school children from the nearby primary school. The artwork is screen printed onto laminated toughened glass.

Additional glass insets incorporated into the rear perimeter fencing use digital printing onto laminated toughened glass,

with additional bonded antique glass elements.

ST. FELIX RC CHURCH

HAVERHILL

7m hanging glass sculpture in the foyer entrance of a new church. The design is a celebration of the act of Baptism, and contains a scallop shell, the symbol of

Baptism, together with text from the New Testament.

ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH

ALTON

35 m2 glass screen installed round wall of new kitchen and meeting room facilities. The artwork illustrates the

long history of Alton town and includes elements of Roman architecture, indigenous industries, references

to the English Civil war and a map of the town from 1666. Artwork is digitally printed onto a membrane

and laminated inside toughened glass panels.

ST. MARY'S CHURCH

BITTESWELL

These traditional handmade stained glass windows celebrate the commissioning of a new extension to this village church.

The theme of the Burning Bush and the Virgin Mary intertwine to create a vibrant and colourful design.

BLUNHAM PARISH CHURCH

BEDFORD

Artist's impression of a 14 m2 glass screen to be installed later this year, creating a new vestry and meeting room. The design

celebrates the Life of the English poet and Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral Dr. John Donne. Ceramic pigment screen printed

onto 17mm toughened glass.

ST. BARBARA'S CHURCH

COVENTRY

Traditional handmade stained glass window on the theme of "The Young Christ in the Temple" and the "Life of St. Barbara."

The design includes various visual references to the local community. All the artwork is hand painted onto antique glass.

CREATIVE ARTS CENTRE

EPPING FOREST

Digital printed glass panels above an entrance to the new Creative Arts Centre in Epping Forest. The designs combine images on the

theme of performance, and include musical instruments, poems and silhouettes of plants.

ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL

EDINBURGH

A series of sculptures with digital printed images on 10mm toughened glass with hand painted poems on the wall of the entrance foyer of a new hospital wing. The design reflects the theme of walking on the

banks of the River Leith, and encountering various flora and fauna. The glass leaves appear to be meandering down the river and the poem moves

across the wall in the same pattern as the River Leith, which moves through Edinburgh.

ST. MARY'S CHURCH

MELTON MOWBRAY

Artist's impression of a new stained glass window to be installed later this year, in celebration of the community of Melton Mowbray. Famous

for its Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese, the design includes these elements and many others, all wrapped round the theme of the Tree of Life.

HALLE ORCHESTRA STUDIOS

MANCHESTER

3 m dia. Rose window installed in the recording venue of Halle Orchestra. The artwork is called "Eye of Helios" and

is inspired by the Greek legend of the Sun God Helios, who brought light and warmth to all the continents of the world.

The central motif of the Sun radiates outwards in a delicate arrangement of greens and blues, with textures and images

including Manchester's favourite creature the Honey Bee and three musical instruments, the Violin, the Harp and

the French Horn.

ST. FRANCIS CONVENT

MELTON MOWBRAY

Traditional stained glass on the theme of " The Canticle of the Creatures," by St. Francis of Assisi, featuring

both a Sun and a Moon window. All the elements are hand painted in the traditional manner and kiln fired.

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST

SEVEN KINGS, ILFORD

Great West window on the theme of "Light of the World", celebrating the Gospel of Christ through a combination of classical and contemporary ideas. The design brings

together references from St. John's Gospel and combines them with specific elements that are particular to St. John's

Church, Seven Kings. 18 m2 traditional stained glass window, with additional screen printed elements.

GUILDFORD BAPTIST CHURCH

GUILDFORD

Glass cube installed into position above a new chapel area in refurbished church. The design is based on the colour

scheme of rich yellows and gold, reflecting God's Glory into the chapel interior. The artwork is made using screen printed

ceramic pigments kiln fired onto 17mm toughened glass panels, which are held in position with steel clamps. Others glass features

included bonded antique glass elements onto clear toughened glass, suspended in front of existing windows.

GETTING STARTED

Sometimes the idea of commissioning a work of art can be daunting and so I'm happy to give guidance and help throughout the process. One of the most important first steps is to establish the scope of the brief - what is it you would like the artwork to achieve? Sometimes it can be helpful to form a steering committee to take the project forward, and I'm more than happy to arrange a first meeting to discuss your ideas, and to show the group the type of work I do. Estimated Budgets How much it will cost depends on what you would like to achieve. I can offer a guide costs for the project, however the final figure can only be agreed when we have established all the details of design, manufacture and installation. Costs are usually broken down into stages. First is the design stage, and this will attract a design fee which can be agreed after initial meetings and discussions with the steering committee. Second stage is the fabrication and fitting cost, and this can be established when we have agreed a final design, timescale for the work, method of manufacture and installation. Design Once the scope of the brief and budgets have been decided, initial designs ideas will be presented to the client and other stakeholders for discussion. Any revisions or amendments to the initial designs can be made before a final set of designs is agreed. Samples will be produced to ensure that the concepts are clearly understood by the client and planners prior to fabrication of the artworks. Payments Design costs are separate to fabrication and fitting costs. The agreed design fee is paid in advance, and this is a self contain element, with no obligation on the client to proceed to the next stage. A 50% deposit is payable before fabrication and fitting begins, with a further 25% payable during work in progress, and the balance due on installation of artwork. Throughout the commissioning process, from design through to completion, my aim is to make the journey an interesting, engaging and enjoyable process for everyone involved.

Derek Hunt is a glass artist who designs artworks for public spaces, including libraries, schools, hospitals, theatres, and churches. He works with sculptural objects which can be hung on wires or fixed to walls, and also makes traditional stained glass. Every project is different and unique, with a focus on collaboration and community engagement being at the heart of many commissions. In addition to contemporary public art, Derek Hunt makes traditional stained glass from his Leicestershire studio using handmade glass sourced from Britain and Europe.

Fabricated in handmade antique glass, with pencil bevelled prisms and a selection of hand painted or screen printed images. The object of the design is a celebration of the art of performance, and includes elements of dance, drama and music within the design. Client The Arts Council/ The National Lottery in conjunction with Latimer School.

• Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Oadby, Leicester. 1995 Series of 5 stained glass windows each measuring approximately 700/2500 mm. Fabricated in handmade antique glass with pencil bevelled prisms. Design contains elements of the Miracles of Christ, including the Miracle of the Loaves & Fishes, the Holy Sacrament, and the Miracle of the Water & the Wine.

Stained glass window for Baptistery area of St. James Church, Birstall. Window measures approximately 2m/5m and is fabricated in handmade antique glass with pencil bevelled prisms. The object of the design is to create a focal point for the act of baptism.

• Private Swimming Pool, Solihull. 1994 25 sq. metres of stained glass installed into a roof of a private swimming pool. Fabricated in handmade antique glass, etched and textured. The object of the design is to provide a reflection of water lilies on the surface of the swimming pool.

• Saffron Group Practice Doctor's Surgery, Leicester. 1993

Each window measures 800/ 3000 mm. Fabricated in handmade antique glass with painted details. Part funded by East Midlands Arts, together with a Trust Fund set up by the doctors to buy works of art for the practice.

Two 3.5 m tall lancet windows in hand made antique glass.

• Belfry Shopping Centre, Redhill. 1991 Large stained glass contemporary abstract window, measuring 10 sq.m installed in atrium area of Redhill shopping centre. Fabricated in handmade antique glass with sandblasted back. Window is backlit and lighting is computer controlled to compensate for changing daylight levels. The object of the design is to celebrate conspicuous consumption. Client Lesley Jones Architects and Burtons Property Group.
