Even though the calendar says it’s spring, March & April has the most rainfall in Northern California than any other month of the year, but we can still get ready for the warmer weather starting with shopping at the local farmer’s markets. Not only do our local farms make eating healthy, easy and inexpensive, it’s a great excuse to get outside, even if it’s raining!

Buying local food keeps our dollars circulating in our community and is fresher and tastes better. Local farmers can offer food produced for taste, rather than for shipping and long shelf life. It’s better for the environment, because local food doesn’t have far to travel, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials.

At our produce stands and farmer’s markets, you’ll fi nd everything from almonds, walnuts & pistachios to plums, persimmons & pears. Enjoy an outing to a local farm for U-Pick cherries, apricots, peaches or berries. Just-picked tomatoes, onions and peppers make for a fl avorful salsa. Any meal tastes better with fresh vegetables, like green beans, peas or cucumbers. You’ll even fi nd items such as honey, oils & vinegars, homemade pies and wines.

Moving With ChildrenMoving is an exciting time full of commotion that can be tough on everyone, including the children. The impact the move will have on kids usually is age-related. Babies, toddlers tend to deal well and young children will have some diffi culty with moving, while adolescents may resist and often resent the move. Here are a few timeless tips that may help all families on the move:

• Clearly explain why you’re moving. Children like to be in the loop and talking to them about the move, what it means and what it will entail can help limit move-related anxiety.

• Familiarize the children with the new location by providing them with exciting information about the area. Highlight some of the location’s points of interest that you think your children will appreciate, like an amusement park or local activities.

• Make sure everyone has packed and clearly labeled their belongings. Keep

the most-used items easily accessible. For a small child, this could include a few favorite toys or a security item. Older kids may not be able to survive without certain electronics or favorite clothing items.

Moving Babies and Toddlers - Babies and toddlers typically are easy to move, but they also can become confused or scared. Consider the following tips for them:

• Pack their rooms last and keep favorite toys and other must-haves close at hand.

• Try to stick to the established routines like lunchtime and naptime.

Moving Preschoolers and School-Age Children - Kids this age can get excited about moving and may be eager to help. If you’re moving with school-age children, consider the following tips:

• Let the children help pack their own rooms and once you’re in the new house, let them help decorate and arrange their new rooms.

• Drive them by their new school or daycare. Also showing them the neighborhood park can give them something to focus on.

Moving Adolescents - Adolescents are deeply involved in their social network. Child development experts suggest these

kids receive news of the move as soon as possible. They will need more time to get used to idea and to say good-bye to their friends. Some other tips to consider:

• Spend time together getting to know the new area by driving around.

• Show them their new school and the surrounding area.

• Check into local activities and youth clubs.

• If your child is a senior in high school, some child-development experts suggest letting the child stay behind to fi nish the school year. These experts emphasize that this decision only makes sense if your child’s living conditions will be appropriate and safe.

Simple Steps to Save Gas Without Driving LessDriving less doesn’t have to be a consumer’s reaction to rising gas prices, according to the Car Care Council. While consumers can’t control the price of gas, they can control how much gas they use by following some simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance.

“Most motorists don’t have the option of driving less when gas prices rise, but they can cancel out the increases by making sure their vehicle is getting maximum fuel economy,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Fuel consumption is directly related to vehicle care and driver behavior and both can have a signifi cant impact on how much motorists pay at the pump.”

The Car Care Council offers these simple steps to save gas without driving less:

• Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.

• Keep tires properly infl ated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent.

• Replace dirty or clogged air fi lters on older vehicles to improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent.

• Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon.

• Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon.

• Check the gas cap. Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air.

• Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph.

• Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is suffi cient.

• Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city.

• Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip.

• Don’t haul unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.

“Some motorists think they are saving money when they put off needed vehicle maintenance,” said White. “What they don’t realize is that neglecting routine maintenance can end up costing a lot more. Keeping your car running effi ciently and modifying your driving behavior is the best way to improve your vehicle’s fuel economy and keep more money in your pocket.”
