Two dialogue sessions were held to gather residents’ feedback for Changi Simei’s Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) on 9 March. Food and drinks were provided during the sessions, as residents looked at the design proposals and mingled with Member of Parliament Ms Jessica Tan and the other panel members. Issues and suggestions that were raised by residents included more design colour schemes and requests for advance notice to be given before upgrading works commence.

EASTER FUNZ @CHANGI SIMEIResidents had an egg-cellent time celebrating Easter on 13 April at Changi Simei CC, with a cracking lineup of activities prepared for them. They caught toy fish in an inflatable pool, used giant chopsticks to grab capsule ‘eggs’ from a basket, matched six Easter egg designs in 30 seconds, and pinned tails on bunny pictures while blindfolded. There was also a Candy House for redemption of party packs, light snacks and chocolate eggs, as well as a booth to tie-dye T-shirts. The highlight of the event was the Easter egg decoration competition, which saw participants unleashing their eggs-traordinary creativity. Member of Parliament Ms Jessica Tan then gave out the prizes for the contest, bringing an end to the egg-citing day!

BEDOK

Chit Chat @ Bedok is a platform to connect the people to the government, government to people as well as people to people. On the morning of 13 April, Member of Parliament Mr Lim Swee Say met residents to talk about the Pioneer Generation Package. Amongst other issues, residents asked questions about the Package as well as MediShield, which Mr Lim clarified with the most up-to-date information. There were also batik painting and paper crane folding booths to engage residents at the session.

PIONEER GENERATION PACKAGE SHARING SESSION

PROJECT K.AN

Fengshan SCEC organised sharing sessions on 12 and 26 April at Fengshan CC, with the aim of helping residents understand the Pioneer Generation Package scheme and to clarify their questions. Amongst others, the audience raised questions on MediShield life insurance premiums, additional subsidies for services at specialist outpatient clinics, as well as the difference between government and private hospitals, which the panel helped to clarify. The sessions saw turnouts of a few hundred residents. They were held mainly in English and Mandarin, and included dialects such as Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and Hainanese to reach out to the elderly residents.

Project K.AN, a canned food donation drive, is an outreach initiative spearheaded by Kampong Chai Chee CC’s Youth Executive Committee (YEC) to show care and concern for the less-privileged living in East Coast GRC. The month-long event came to a record-breaking conclusion on 12 April, when they set the record for “Largest Logo Made of Canned Food” – a 13.8m by 15.5m People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) logo made up of 12,500 cans. Member of Parliament Mr Lee Yi Shyan presented a donation to the Community Welfare Development Fund, as well as tokens of appreciation to the donors and partners. Volunteers then packed and distributed the canned food around Kampong Chai Chee, bringing the project to a heartwarming end.

KINDNESS WEEK 2014 WALKATHON

SIGLAP HEALTH SCREENING110 residents aged 50 and older from Siglap Lucky Valley attended a health screening at Siglap CC on 6 April. As part of the Siglap Silver Blueprint programme, these health screenings are to ensure that elderly residents are aware of their physical well-being, as well as allow Siglap grassroots organisations to plan and implement health and wellness-related programmes according to the health trends of the elderly. Residents were screened for illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes, and those above 60 were tested for decline in functional ability such as poor vision, hearing difficulty and decreased leg strength.

For the fourth consecutive year, Siglap South CC’s Youth Executive Committee (YEC) organised its Kindness Week campaign, an initiat ive started in 2011 to reach out to the needy in the Joo Chiat constituency and inculcate a sense of compassion and empathy amongst youth. This year’s Kindness Week culminated in a walkathon on the morning of 13 April. One of the stops during the walkathon was a community wall at Block 3 East Coast Road, where residents were invited to leave their palm prints. The event ended with a mass picnic at East Coast Park, where residents mingled with family, friends and their Member of Parliament Mr Charles Chong.
