Site ContextThe site, an empty lot owned by the City of Boston, is located at the periphery of the Eagle Hill neighborhood of East Boston. The site is within walking distance of some of the densest residential blocks in East Boston. The immediate context includes two public parks, including athletic facilities. As former industrial areas in the area continue to be reclaimed for residential and mixed-use programs, the use of this site will have an influence on the future of the neighborhood.

Site

ProgramEast Boston has many bodegas and corner stores, but only one major full-service grocery store. The site is located on the opposite edge of Eagle Hill from the Shaw’s on Border Street. Using the site to provide the neighborhood with a market selling local produce and dairy would put more residents within walking distance of a wide range of fresh food options.

Building Orientation

Refrigeration equipment and customers are heat sources.

Shallow 5° angle of photovoltaic array emphasizes cooling load during summer

months.

Office/bathroom section is raised to aid passive ventilation as well as allow space

for delivery van parking.
