In the book, the main character sets off unexpectedly one morning to walk a distance of 627 miles to visit an old work colleague who is terminally ill with cancer. Sounds depressing, but if you've read the book you will know that it is ultimately an uplifting story. Last Christmas I give Jacqui a copy of the book's sequel. It turned out to be the most inappropriate choice of present in the history of mankind as it was largely set in a hospice! Thankfully she didn't mind too much. What she did love though were the words that I had written inside the cover of the book, "I would walk even further than Harold Fry if I thought it could save you". She knew that I was never a great walker and our walks together were always shorter than she would have liked because I generally ran out of steam much sooner than she did. When I began looking at possible walking routes in Northern Ireland, I couldn't quite believe it when I discovered that the complete Ulster Way route is actually 625 miles long! The decision was made for me in an instant. The challenge I have therefore set for myself is to walk the entire Ulster Way, but starting and finishing at Greenisland Primary School where Jacqui was an “outstanding” teacher for 25 years. This will add about 5 miles on to the route thus ensuring that I will have walked even further than the fictional Harold Fry! I plan to walk an average of about 15 miles a day and so it will take around 40 days to complete the entire route. However, it simply won't be possible for me to devote 40 consecutive days to the challenge - quite apart from the difficulty in finding the time, I really don't think my legs would be up to it! So instead, I intend to complete the challenge in blocks of days over the Summer, using a combination of weekends and leave from work. I started my walk from Greenisland as planned on Friday 12 June and hope to finish back there in early September. As I stated earlier, my objective is to raise as much money as possible to support the fight against the awful disease that is cancer. THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF DERMOT BREEN

Dermot & Jacquis Story

My wonderful wife Jacqui lost her life to

cancer earlier this year. I want to honour her

memory by helping to raise as much money

as possible to support the fight against this awful disease.

Jacqui and I loved the book "The Unlikely

Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" by Rachel Joyce,

which we both read a couple of years ago

before Jacqui was diagnosed with cancer.

In the book, the main character sets off

unexpectedly one morning to walk a distance

of 627 miles to visit an old work colleague

who is terminally ill with cancer. Sounds

depressing, but if you've read the book you

will know that it is ultimately an uplifting

story. Last Christmas I give Jacqui a copy of

the book's sequel. It turned out to be the most

inappropriate choice of present in the history

of mankind as it was largely set in a hospice!

Thankfully she didn't mind too much. What

she did love though were the words that I had

written inside the cover of the book, "I would

walk even further than Harold Fry if I thought

it could save you". She knew that I was never

a great walker and our walks together were

always shorter than she would have liked

because I generally ran out of steam much

sooner than she did. So she really appreciated

the sentiment behind my words.

Unfortunately, there was no saving Jacqui

and she passed away just a few weeks after

Christmas on 18th January 2015. Although

heartbroken, an idea started to form in

my head. Perhaps I could honour Jacqui's

memory and help save others by walking

further than Harold Fry. When I began looking

at possible walking routes in Northern

Ireland, I couldn't quite believe it when

I discovered that the complete Ulster

Way route is actually 625 miles long! The

decision was made for me in an instant.

The challenge I have therefore set for

myself is to walk the entire Ulster Way,

but starting and finishing at Greenisland Primary School where Jacqui was an

“outstanding” teacher for 25 years. This

will add about 5 miles on to the route

thus ensuring that I will have walked even

further than the fictional Harold Fry! I plan to walk an average of about 15 miles a day

and so it will take around 40 days to complete

the entire route. However, it simply won't

be possible for me to devote 40 consecutive

days to the challenge - quite apart from the

difficulty in finding the time, I really don't think my legs would be up to it! So instead, I

intend to complete the challenge in blocks of

days over the Summer, using a combination

of weekends and leave from work. I started

my walk from Greenisland as planned on Friday 12 June and hope to finish back there in early September.

As I stated earlier, my objective is to raise

as much money as possible to support the

fight against the awful disease that is cancer. According to the most accurate forecast to

date from Cancer Research UK, one in two

people will develop cancer at some point in

their lives. As far as I am concerned, the more

people that know about this the better, as

every person reached is a potential supporter

of the fight against cancer.

Please visit www.justgiving.com/1000K4J to make a donation. As the 625 miles of the Ulster Way equates

to 1,000 kilometres, my challenge has

become 1,000 kilometres for Jacqui, or

"1000K4J”. My progress over the Summer

Training was held at Eden Allotment Gardens, Carrickfergus and Greenisland Allotment Gardens, each Saturday for three weeks in June. The workshops covered basic skills such as preparing and maintaining a plot, sowing from seed and plug, composting and organic fertilizers. One of those who attended at Greenisland Allotment Gardens, Lisa Haggan, said: “The training was interesting

and informative; I was able to learn some great planting and allotment management techniques. A lovely mix of gardeners attended and personal coaching was provided for thelessgreenfingeredamongus-averyinspiringtrainingprogramme.” The project proved so popular that the Council will be now be holding more throughout the year. Local schools have been thanked for their

contribution to the success of Armed Forces Day.

Specially designed poster entries from the two

schools concerned were prominently displayed at

the Arts and Crafts Marquee in Ballymena Show

Grounds during the main Armed Forces Day event

on Saturday 20 June.

This was as an integral part of the special

weekend, held at the end of June across Mid

and East Antrim. The initiative was aimed at

encouraging P7 pupils to think about the work that

the tri-services carry out at home and abroad.

The Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe and Deputy

Mayor Councillor Timothy Gaston have since visited

Upper Ballyboley and Kells and Connor Primary

Schools to express their appreciation of the pupils’

efforts.

Cllr Ashe attended morning assembly at Upper

Ballyboley Primary School and spoke to the

children about the significance of the Armed Forces Day weekend of events which had been widely

recognised as a fantastic success for the Borough.

Cllr Timothy Gaston, visited Kells and Connor

Primary School to speak with the P7 pupils and to

thank the school for their support.

The Deputy Mayor also referred to the current

programme of Council-sponsored events planned

over the summer months and encouraged the

children to come along to enjoy what was on offer

within their Borough.

Representing the Armed Forces, Major Stephen

Montgomery accompanied the Mayor and the

Deputy Mayor during each of their visits and made

a presentation of plaques in recognition of the

pupil’s efforts.

This week’s 99th anniversary of the start of

the Battle of the Somme will again highlights

the sacrifice and service of the Armed Forces and makes the young people’s contribution all the

more relevant.

LOCAL SCHOOLS’ PRAISED FOR PARTICIPATIONIN ARMED FORCES DAY EVENT

Doing the right thing’ has its rewards, as Mid and East

Antrim Borough’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Timothy

Gaston, recently showed. Cllr Gaston was on hand to

congratulate Larne man, Ian Bates for properly cleaning-

up after his dog, a little terrier called Odo.

Mr Bates, from Glynn Road was spotted ‘doing

the right thing’ by Ossie Porter, one of Mid and East

Antrim Borough Council’s staff. Mr Bates found himself

avoiding a possible fine of £80 had he not cleaned-up – and instead being rewarded with a special ballot ticket.

This went into a draw for a £50 voucher sponsored by Larne traders and Mr Bates’ ballot was duly picked

out as the winner. This was the fourth such draw in the

Larne Traders’ Forum-backed initiative and the last to be

awarded as alternative schemes will now be considered.

Mid and East Antrim Borough’s Deputy Mayor,

Councillor Timothy Gaston, left, as he receives

his £50 voucher to spend in Larne stores.

Larne Traders’ Forum and Mid and East Antrim

Borough’s Ossie Porter, who issued the lucky

ballot.

People don’t always buy what they need - they buy what they want. Sometimes as the expert you will be right about what they need. But if the customer incorrectly thinks they need something else, you’re still going to fail. So give them what they want.Gary Halbert, the famous copywriter, would ask his students: "If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side to help you win?"Common answers included superior meat, best location, lower prices. I, myself, only want one advantage and, if you will give it to me,Iwill(whenitcomestosellingburgers)whipthepantsoffallofyou!""What advantage do you want?" they would ask. "The only advantage I want, is... A Starving Crowd!" he would reply. If your customers are starving and you own a hamburger stand, you are giving them what they want. Look for a starving crowd, it will make things so much easier. If your customers aren’t hungry enough for what you are currently offering, it may be time for a pivot or change of focus or direction. When people really want what you are offering everything else is so much easier.2.YourGoal–MissionStatementA business starting out can waste a lot of time on certain tasks, which are very unproductive at this stage. East Antrim Alliance Party MLA, Stewart Dickson, has expressed concern at the chaos created on the A2 Shore Road on Thursday morning as contractors changed the carriageway which traffic is to use. Speaking on Thursday Mr Dickson said: “Several constituents contacted me after 9am this morning describing a scene of confusion on the Shore Road. Contractors had changed the route for traffic to take, but had not put any signage in place to direct traffic along the new route, with many cars reverting to the previous route. “The result was a huge queue of cars heading towards Carrickfergus on the

wrong carriageway, stuck behind a traffic light intended only to deal with a small volume of traffic coming from the Station Road, Greenisland. An ambulance was even stuck in this chaos for a number of minutes. Meanwhile on the opposite carriageway, Belfast-bound traffic was queued from Jordanstown to Trooperslane. “This is unacceptable, the contractors are supposed to be experienced in these matters and clearly failed to put in place a safe transition from one carriageway to another, causing confusion and ultimately creating a dangerous traffic situation.”

DICKSON EXPRESSES CONCERN AT RUSH HOUR CHAOS ON THE SHORE ROAD

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has been taking the ‘lead’ on Dog Control by actively promoting its services to dog walkers in the Carrickfergus and Islandmagee areas. Two separate dates in June were targeted, with the patrols carried out between 10am and 4:30pm. On the first occasion, dog wardens on foot visited nine separate locations from Carrickfergus Leisure Centre, to Oakfields Glen, Bashfordslands Woods and Diamond Jubilee Wood as well as Castlemara Play Park. They made themselves very visible to both dog walkers and the general public at the popular Marine Gardens and Play Park, Maine Highway and Carrickfergus Castle and Marina, with the Islandmagee area also in focus afterwards. The second high profile exercise saw the wardens taking to bicycles so as to patrol along the length of the Blackhead Path, outside Whitehead. On both occasions, the focus was to be as proactive as possible, interacting with approximately 130-150 number of dog

walkers each time. One day alone saw a total of 2,100 dog fouling bags handed out. Feedback was good with the majority welcoming the activity, while about 90%, of dog walkers used the opportunity to raise the Dog Control Order Consultation. Officers noted there were obvious concerns regarding the original proposal for the exclusion of dogs from some areas - but walkers were advised of the revised, current position on the consultation. The officers’ visibility was also recognised - especially around the Marine Highway, Marine Gardens and the Castle – as they had some very positive comments from the public who said that it gave them a ‘sense of reassurance’ that someone in authority was in the area. The exercise was judged very successful, with the only down side being that they detected one dog walker not cleaning up after his dog. He is now being dealt with for an Unlicensed Dog (Fixed Penalty) and Failing to Clean up after His Dog (Fixed Penalty).

Scoliosis is a progressive condition causing the spine to curve or twist into a “C” or “S” shape. Scoliosis is quite common, affecting two to three in every 100 people. In eight out of 10 cases, the condition usually develops between the ages of 10 and 16, during the growth spurt of puberty. During adolescence, girls are much more likely to be affected. This is probably because girls typically have shorter and faster growth spurts than boys.Scoliosis can go unnoticed in a child because it is rarely painful in the formative years. Early intervention is important, as chances for stabilization and reduction of the curve are higher. Early signs of scoliosis can be detected WITHOUT the patient having pain or symptoms. Parents should watch for the following symptoms:Uneven shoulders/Leaning to one sideProminent shoulder blade(s)Uneven waistline

Elevated or uneven hipsCurving spine that looks like an “S” or “C” when viewed from behindBack and leg pains may develop but are often dismissed as “growing pains.” Many parents consult our office soon after the birth of their child. Then they follow up with periodic chiropractic check-ups throughout their child’s developing years.Chiropractic adjustments can help restore motion to the joints, relax the muscles, and significantly reduce the pain. Through gentle chiropractic adjustments, specific therapies, stretching and home exercises, patients can see improvement. This summer we are offering complimentary scoliosis checks for under 16’s!

Sarah McFall, a colleague from Sainsbury’s

Carrickfergus, has given up her time to volunteer

as part of the Local Heroes scheme.

Sainsbury’s encourages colleagues to volunteer

with a charity or within the community and

donates £5 to the charity or community group for

every hour spent volunteering.

Sarah McFall has been helping Carrickfergus

Central P.S. by assisting in the school’s library.

She runs the library giving out and collecting the

books, participating in story time, encouraging the

children to read and helping the children select

appropriate books for their reading level.

The scheme is now in its second year and has

raised over £130,000 in additional donations.

David Sterrett, Deputy Store Manager, said:

“It’s amazing how many colleagues give up their

own time to help so many great causes. The Local

Heroes scheme recognises the hard work and

dedication our colleagues have for their local

community”.

The scheme recognises volunteering including

School Governors, Scout and Guide leaders, Sports

Coaches and charity event helpers.

Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus has raised £3379 for

PAKT part of Carrickfergus YMCA, as part of the

Local Charity of the Year scheme.

PAKT stands for Parents and Kids Together

and the ethos is mainly to bring the family unit

together by concentrating on relationships

between parents and children within the family

unit and this is an important factor which

distinguishes PAKT from any other programmes.

The programme is split into 4 elements, namely

programmes for primary school aged children

(from P2 to P7), programmes for the teenagers,

programmes for the parents and the 4th

element combines all of the above and brings

the family together. We do this by developing

the intellectual, social, spiritual, physical and

emotional needs of those in the community.

The group was chosen by customers and

colleagues last June and has received support from

the store for the past year.

Activities have included Collection days and

supporting their Bible and Cookery classes.

Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus colleague Christine

Shannon also volunteered for the charity allowing

the charity to receive an additional £200 through

a Local Heroes grant. The Sainsbury’s Local Heroes

scheme recognises the hard work and dedication

our colleagues have for their local community.

David Sterrett, Deputy Store Manager of

Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus, said: “We’ve had an

excellent year supporting PAKT, our customers and

colleagues have got involved with a number of

fundraising activities. We’d like to thank everyone

at PAKT for making it such a brilliant partnership.”

Maurice Shearer, PAKT/YMCA Family Coordinator

said: “We’d like to thank the customers and

colleagues at Sainsbury’s in Carrickfegus for their

support over the past year. It has made such a

difference to PAKT and we’re extremely grateful for

the donations and awareness we’ve been able to

raise.”

Customers can vote for the store’s new partner

from 15th – 28th June in-store and online at

Larne Music Month will see Mid and East Antrim Borough Council celebrating the rich musical talent and culture found in the area – as well as offering a taste of ‘Fame’ to young up-and-coming musicians. Throughout the month of July, a diverse range of local musicians will be performing weekly at Broadway Bandstand, in live town centre gigs. Organisers will also be creating a musical ‘Piazza’ where visitors will be able to buy a coffee or ice cream from local shops and listen to some beautiful music - hopefully in good summer weather. As well as providing a showcase for local musicians, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council will be offering song-writing workshops for young people ages 13– 18yrs. Participants will group together to form a band over the three-day workshops, learning how to write original songs as well as playing music from some of Northern Ireland’s most exceptional performers. Workshops will take place on Wednesday 15th July - Friday 17th July from 10.30am-4.30pm each day, at Larne Town Hall. The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough

Council, Councillor Billy Ashe fully supports the event.Speakingasheattendedtheofficialopening of The Music Yard facility in Larne, he said: “Larne Music Month is a marvellous

opportunity for our musicians, singers and song writers to expand their talents and a great initiative to allow the people of Mid and East Antrim to enjoy some of the coolest sounds of summer.”

Younger children will also be given a chance of ‘Fame’ starting with free beginner ‘taster workshops’ over a period of six weeks. These will commence on 21st July at The Music Yard, Larne. The course will allow participants to discover music through practical learning, using guitars, vocals and percussion. Students will be supported and mentored by the professional tutors at The Music Yard, in four fully equipped music studios. In true ‘Fame’ (or ‘X-Factor) style, the course will then culminate in a public group performance in Larne Town Hall. Places are limited for both workshops and booking is essential. Contact Marian at Larne Museum and Arts centre on 028 2827 9482 or email [email protected].

A few years ago I started suffering with foot and leg pain. Every time I took any exercise I was in pain afterwards. The pain was mainly in the arches of my feet which would really throb. I also started getting sharp pains in my feet and my lower legs. I am a nurse so I need to spend long periods on my feet and this was becoming increasingly difficult. I tried different insoles and supports but nothing seemed to work. The pain started to really restrict the amount of exercise I could take and after work I literally had to come home and ice my feet to reduce the pain. I couldn’t even go for walks without pain.I was referred by a friend to see David Hallowell at the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic. I was told that they made their own custom foot supports and as I’d tried off the shelf supports and they hadn’t helped, I really wanted to get the best treatment. I got an appointment with David who pointed

out that my feet were flattening and that this was causing severe foot strain. He took some casts of my feet and had a set of supports manufactured. The devices were ready within a week. The difference they have made has been great. My feet no longer ache and I am back taking exercise without pain. I can strongly recommend The Northern Ankle Clinic for anyone with this type of pain in their feet or ankles.David say’s – This type of foot pain is very common and it is essential to get it treated as early as possible and to use really close fitting supports. As all our devices are custom made on a cast of the patient’s foot they fit very closely. This gives much greater control of the foot as well as greater comfort. Our patients like being able to rely on our after care support service which allows them to call in and talk to member of staff and if need be to have a small modification made to their supports while they wait.

When the flip flops come out, the soles of our feet take a beating, after showering, use a pedicure file on each of your feet to help keep hard skin at bay. Too much effort? Pay us a visit and we will do it for you and we will finish it off with one of our gorgeous summer polishes. Do you ever wonder why your toe nails are an unsightly colour when you remove your nail polish? Don’t forget to use a base coat when polishing your nails, as nail polish can stain your nails, making it rather embaressing when it starts to come off. Don’t forget a top coat as well to help seal the colour in and make it last longer, put fresh top coat on every 2 to 3 days to make your polish last longer and stay shiny. When it is hot outside our bodies become dehydrated, if your body is dehydrated then your skin is also dehydrated. Dehyrdrated skin can cause unwanted wrinkles, thats why it is so important to drink a healthy amount of water, which will also help to flush out toxins and impurities in your skin. To keep skin looking young and fresh, sunblock is a must. I would recommend a

minimum of SPF30. Sun damage to your skin may not show up immediately, but years down the line you may regret neglecting to protect your skin against the suns harmful rays. The only safe tan is a Spray Tan. A microdermabrasion facial is a great solution to help give your skin a healthy glow for summer time, it reduces the appearance of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles and acne scarring. Its especially effective if you have clogged pores, blackheads and or whiteheads. Microdermabrasion is a great alternative to botox and chemical skin peels, treatments are inexpensive comparatively and there is no pain or unwanted side effects. It is effective on all skin types. Do you have trouble taming your frizzy hair in the summer? For some unlucky people, the slightest bit of humidity can leave their hair looking less than desirable. A Brazilian Blowout will help tame the frizz for up to 12 weeks. Contact Hair By Mizkelli to find out about their fantastic summer offer on Brazilian Blowouts on 02893 362191.

Carrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club’s recent series of grasstrack events at Six Mile Water have once again proved to be a tremendous success for motorcycle racing in East Antrim with riders and spectators turning out in their numbers. The series of events which were hosted on Michael & Ingrid Scott’s land at Ballyclare saw in excess of three hundred competitor entries over four events staged for adult and youth racers. There was a great mix of competitors talking part, ranging from kids as young as six racing in the 50cc automatic class right up to veteranridersintotheirfiftiescompetinginthe various Expert & Clubman classes.

With such a wide range of competitors, spectators witnessed some fantastic racing throughout as Club Chairman Peter Denney explained: “Grasstrack racing is the grassroots level of motocross, tracks are safe and suitable for all abilities of rider, nothing is extreme which tends to provide great entertainment with some close racing. It is a fantastic place for people to get into the sport and is exactly what we set out to do when we formed the club initially. C&DMCC were re-formed back in 2007 by a small group of motocross riders that wanted to bring off road motorcycle racing into East Antrim. Peter has been at the helm of the

club from the start and as a rider himself, knows the value of this form of racing. “Our aim when we started the club was to provide a place for people in the area to go ride their bikes legally.

Ideally we’d have had our own permanent circuit by now but that hasn’t been possible through one thing and another. I’d say we’ve done a pretty good job of providing a place to race though and have brought many people into the sport over the years. All ages and abilities can race at our events in a safe, controlled environment under supervisionofafullteamofqualifiedofficialsandfirstaidpersonnelshouldanythinggowrong. These events don’t just happen though and as is typical of many sports clubs, C&DMCC could do with a few extra bodies to help out. Anyone interested in volunteering should get in contact via www.carrickfergusmcc.co.uk and equally, for anyone that wants to know how to get started racing, these are the people to speak to.That’s the end of Carrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club’s Grasstrack season for 2015 but there is still one event to go for them this year. The spectacular HTM Off Road EnduroCross is scheduled for Thursday 23rd July in Glenarm and is worth checking out.

Last year four time world enduro champion, David Knight

raced at this event and put on one superb

show in front of a big crowd. The event forms part of Dalriada Festival week and spectators admission

is priced at just £5 per adult with kids under 16

admitted free.
