University of Milano Bicocca is a young and nationally bright university. It has been recently ranked as
the second university in the Country for the quality of the research; and the department of sociology
and social research, within which is situated the bachelor and master in social work, has gained the
first place as the most important sociology department in the country.
The department of Sociology and Social Research provides bachelor courses on Sociology, social
work, science of organization, science of tourism and local community. At the same time it promotes
research and post graduate and doctoral course in related disciplines.
All the degree courses provide students with a solid background in the field and the tools to be
competitive in the job market. The educational experience within the Department enables students to
“read” different social contexts and to critically interpret them. Through an interdisciplinary approach
social work students are exposed to other academic fields such as law, philosophy, psychology,
history, data analysis techniques, economics that strengthen the handling of their own subject. In-
class lectures are enriched by seminars, lab work and stages and filed work, which allow students to
put their lessons into practice, and to learn how to connect theory and practice.

WELCOMEWELCOMEWELCOMEWELCOME
The economic crisis that hit Europe in the last five years has created serious difficulties in the welfare
system and in social services, especially regarding social workers. As social work educators, we have to
ask ourselves how far our programs and educational methods are effective to prepare professionals able to
cope with daily challenges stemming from a constantly changing context.
Therefore, the Conference of Milan would like to promote a wide and thorough discussion based on sharing
of theoretical and practical experiences. From that the conference aims to develop the debate around
competence and educational standard needed in nowadays welfare systems crossed by neoliberal policies
and pressure of dismantling of welfare systems.
In particular the conference will focus on:
• what kind of fundamental competences qualify the social worker and differentiate him/her from the other
professional workers, in a perspective that overcomes marketisation policies - which tend to
standardized professional practices - and is able to respect diversity and differences between countries
and cultures
• Which are the specific contributions of the social work discipline which form the core of social work
• what kind of educational methods are the most adequate to prepare reflexive, critical , flexible, and open
to changes social workers, who’s able to look for innovative answers to social problems, in the light of
human right and social justice?
• which are the best methods to teach how to integrate theory and practice, in order to strengthen social
workers’ ability to develop a research approach in their daily practices
• how it’s possible to offer opening perspectives on the international dimension and the politic
commitment that permits the achieving of the global agenda goals.
In order to discuss together the above mentioned themes, we are glad to welcoming you in Milan, EXPO
2015 venue, with the purpose of promoting social work also in this great and important worldwide known
event.

Milan Bicocca UMilan Bicocca UMilan Bicocca UMilan Bicocca Universityniversityniversityniversity
The University of Milano-Bicocca was
established on June 10, 1998, to serve
students from Northern Italy and relieve
some of the pressure on the over-crowded
University of Milan. Groups of professors
and researchers chose to come and
participate in the enterprise. They were
driven by their enthusiasm for the new, and
by the chance to broaden academic
horizons without having their work
undermined by traditional methods of education. From the start, this very fertile climate became a
unique training ground, which offered something new even in the most traditional disciplines. The
University stands in an area on the northern edge of Milan, which was occupied by the Pirelli
industrial complex until the late 1980s. This area is now the location of the
biggest urban renewal project carried out in Milan since the end of the
Second World War. The world-renowned architect, Vittorio Gregotti has
transformed the ex-industrial area and its warehouses into a new district,
which includes our Athenaeum, research laboratories and student residence
halls; Hangar Bicocca, the contemporary art museum; the Italian National
Research Council (CNR), multinational company offices and the new
headquarters of the Pirelli Group.
The name Bicocca derives from the historic Villa Bicocca degli
Arcimboldi (202, Viale Sarca), a mid-15th century rural residence of
the Arcimboldi family, which now belongs to a financial holding
company. In the heart of the Bicocca neighborhood, University
buildings are characterized by red walls and white window shutters: the main complex facing the
squares Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo and Piazza della Scienza was developed from two pre-existing
Pirelli warehouses. In this cityscape the University of Milano—Bicocca arose and hundreds of
lecturers have contributed their talents and brought international networks and research groups.
This synergy makes the University a laboratory where tradition and modernity are combined to
ensure an innovative future.
