Plan

Earth Hour is a global movement, which brings millions togetheracross the world to call for greater action on climate change. All itinvolves is switching off lights for one hour and organise events toshow we care about the future of our planet. Earth hour is at8.30pm on the last Saturday in March. Our planet is under threatfrom climate change and a staggering loss in biodiversity. EarthHour is our chance to talk about what this means, and take action. Here are some simple actions suggested by World Scouting thatyou can take to participate in Earth Hour.

Do

Earth Hour activity:Have an activity on the evening of Earth Hour, if you are indoorsturn off all lights and electrical devices and run games usingalternative forms of lighting. Better still go camping or bivvying andavoid the use of electricity altogether.

Say no to plastic:The world throws away about 78 million tonsof plastic every year, and a third ends up inthe sea. By 2050 there could be more plasticin the ocean than fish. Get your Scout grouptogether and commit to reducing your useof plastic. Carry your own water bottle, usea bamboo straw, and bring your ownshopping bags. It’s vital we all commit tostop using single-use plastic, such asstraws, plastic cups, and clingfilm. Localsolutions really can change the world.

My Carbon Footprint: You've turned your lights off, so what elsecan you do to reduce your impact on the environment. How do youget to school or work? How often do you buy new things? Have youever planted a tree? Work out the size of each of your group'scarbon footprint and make a commitment to reduce it.

Go plogging: Get your Scout trooptogether, give everyone a big bin bagand go for a plog! Plogging is acombination of jogging and collectinglitter. It's your chance to get fit and cleanup your environment at the same time.

Dealing with disaster: The changing climate has brought morenatural disasters - from extremes of heat and cold to bush fires, torrential rain and flooding - devastating communities and theenvironment. What are the risks of natural disaster and what doyou need to do to be prepared when disaster strikes? Why notarrange a visit to your local emergency services station to find outhow they deal with disaster, and how you might be able to help.

Get back to nature: Get your group together and go on anexpedition to find out more about the plants and animals in yourlocal area. Think about how your senses help you create a pictureof the world around you. Maybe you can take a barefoot walk, orput on a blindfold to examine a tree. Think about what you'reexperiencing and what nature is telling you.
