The move has been handled with grace by our students and parents and great care by our Operations and Facilities Departments. We hope to add some new features to the playground area in Term 4 to further freshen up the appearance and offer new activities for our young and energetic students. The big school wide events in Term 3 were our Indonesian Independence Day Celebrations and our just completed International Day Celebrations. Both events actively included the joint participation of Primary and Secondary students and teaching staffs together which has helped to create a closer sense of family amongst the students, parents and staff here at NZIS. Our Primary students were also able to enjoy the opportunity to explore Jakarta and the surrounding regions of West Java on their school and camping trips. For the past two weeks our Secondary Seniors have been very busy studying and writing their Mock Exams for IGCSE, AS and A Level Cambridge Examinations. The students have worked hard and received their scores, predictive grades and feedback to help them prepare during the upcoming Term Break for the start of their Cambridge Final Exams which kick off in early October for some students. Good luck Senior’s with your preparations. I would like to give a special thanks to the International Day Committee and all the Year Level teachers in both Primary and Secondary for all their dedicated work and support in helping the students to prepare well for today’s festivities. It was a great success and the turnout from the parents was phenomenal. I would also like to offer a big thank you to our wonderful pa- rents for your patronage and all your support during the year. Working together, the parents, teachers and school management have the capacity to create a wonderful, supportive and enriching learning environment for our children. In closing, on behalf of NZIS I would like to wish everyone a fun, exciting, safe and enjoyable school break and we look forward to seeing you all back at NZIS at the start of October. Greetings NZIS Parents,This week has brought the curtain down on Term 3 here at NZIS. It has been a jam packed period of time which began with the migration of the Secondary Campus over to the Primary location. The move has been handled with grace by our students and parents and great care by our Operations and Facilities Departments. The transition went very smoothly and we are all pleased with the new layout and the successful amalgamation of Primary and Secondary into one facility.

I would also like to offer a big thank you to our wonderful parents for your patronage and all your support during the year.

Kea & Kiwi class

Here in our Early Years our expert early childhood teachers facilitate children’s active involvement in the scientific process by providing materials, encouraging them to observe, predict, describe, and theorize about what they are doing. Teachers raise questions and problems as children play, helping them to grow in their thinking.

What is it the children get out of their water study, which looks so much like simple fun?

Free play with water can build the foundation for understanding of a multitude of scientific concepts, including • phy sics (flow, motion), • chemistry (solutions, cohesion), • biology (plant and animal life) & • mathe matics (measu rement, equivalence, volu me).

Memory GameWe nurture a child’s love of learning by expanding on his or her own inquisitive nature. As early childhood teachers, we know that teaching means much more than lessons and standards. We’re responsible for creating an environment of support that allows children to develop their own ideas, express their feelings, take risks, make choices, and most of all, grow to be strong, thinking individuals.

So how do we take on this task? We foster a love of learning not so much by the special materials or activities, but through a responsive, inquisitive attitude. When we provide plenty of time for openended, constructive play every day, we create opportunities for children to explore the joy of learning. At the same time, we can extend children’s learning experiences by engaging children in meaningful conversations about their activities.

Year 3 - uenuku class

This week the Year 3 students have been finalizing their math/science and spelling work to wind down the end of our 3rd semester here at NZIS. We’ve also given extra time during PE and Music Class to finalize our performance act so we can be ready for International Day. The kids have done amazing. They have learned and absorbed everything so quickly.

PrImary POST!

Year 5 & 6 - Ikanui

This term, Ikanui have been focused on Nurture. They have watched each other grow and learn cooperatively, as well as independently. Reading groups have read together and answered many highlevel thinking questions related to the books.

One group read Hassan’s New Friend, a story about a Muslim family moving into a nonMuslim community and the challenges they face. Another group read Being Billy, a story about the challenges and accomplishments of a child with Down’s Syndrome. A third group is reading Wonder, a story about a boy with a facial deformity and his years in middle school. The conversations that have happened in class during this time have shown how much they have grown just over the year. Students have also been writing and preparing speeches about a topic they enjoy. They have recently recited these speeches in front of the class.

In math class, Khan Academy has really helped hype up the students about math. They enjoy having math class and studying at home. Many students have embraced Khan Academy and gone on to practice programming and a higher level of math.

In Science class, we did projects about habitats and the plants and animals living there, as well as how they adapted to that environment.

Other highlights of the term include: camp week, hosting a singing assembly, and (according to the students) P.E. class! Camp week brought the students closer together and was a ton of fun for everyone. Our singing assembly went off nicely, with our new students of the term, Beatriz and Minori, rising to the occasion and leading the way perfectly. In P.E. class, students have done testing and all of them have improved in most of the cardio and strength activities.

We all look forward to a fun and exciting Term 4!

Indonesian Bahasa class had been creative in making Indonesia short comic on the subject “Meeting New Friends”. They were given the pictures with blank captions, some basic vocabulary as the clue, and at the end they needed to create the story and share it in front of the class.

They have completed this language activity beautifully and also creatively.

Well done, Year 4.

YEAR 9The Year 9 students learned about the foundation of a database. Starting from analyzing the given data, they must identify the field names, data type for each field and assign a primary key and foreign key to a proper field. They were using MS. Access software while learning this topic. They also learned how to use a Simple Query Language (SQL) to perform tasks such as updating data on a database, or retrieving data from a database. At the end of this topic, students completed a fun assessment with a case study, where they have to write an SQL statement based on the requested data.

Mr. Don

YEAR 7Year 7 has been learning the simplest programming language to exercise their logic. We used a programme called MSW Logo. In this topic, all students tried to use all the possible commands or syntax to draw shapes. They also learned how to draw shapes by using loop functions. They thought this topic was challenging because other than logic, they also need to imagine the position of the turtle and direct the turtle to move to draw correct shapes. Students practiced this topic both with computer and on paper.

YEAR 8Year 8 students learned about logic gates. The objective of this topic was to train their mathematical and logical thinking skills. They must identify the different types of logic gates symbols and rules. They also learned how to perform a calculation by using a multiple combination of logic gates. This topic was very challenging for them because they have to perform multiple calculations, and it needs to be done step by step. Students competed against each other while carrying out this activity, and they had so much fun.

Secondary art class

The Secondary Art classes are preparing for their Art Exhibition which is included in the International Day event. Students were asked to create artworks that related to the event. They did art works based upon the chosen topics such as world peace and flags.

Bahasa class also took part in the Art class activity, the students were asked to contribute by drawing, coloring and painting the flags from countries that are located in the continents of Asia, Europe and America.

Students explored their creativity into various art media by using things such as beads, yarn and spray paint. Their successful creations were then put on easels in the Front Lobby for their fellow students, the parents and NZIS teaching staff to enjoy on International Day.

Secondary business studies

In IGCSE Business, students have been studying the basics of the following topics this term: understanding business activity, people in business, and marketing. In summary, students learn the basics of what businesses want to achieve by pleasing their stakeholders (the owners, management, employees, and customers). They also learn techniques to motivate and empower their employees, by learning the basics of motivational theory. In addition, through marketing they learn how businesses are marketed, and how to make their businesses seem attractive to the public.

As Fica and Ivan are around the same level (they joined Business at around the same time), I often pair them together to study and understand these topics together. Most of Business entails practicing past papers, however sometimes they can do fun activities such as giving a company presentation on a particular topic from the syllabus. In some cases, the presentations have to be persuasive (as in pitching a new business idea), however sometimes they just pick a particular company and explain how the company is marketed. Most recently they chose the company Microsoft, and how they market the business, and also how to keep and attract new customers.

Tea BagImpatiently waiting inside the dark box

Light has made its daily presence from above

I feel a pinch on the tag, which is connected to my head

And feel myself hanging from the thread

I feel myself getting free from the closedspace package

As I wave my own kind goodbye

Still hanging by a thread, I feel the hellfire under me

I hear myself plop into the boiling water

As strong heat enters my thin skin

I scream in agony as I am soaked by the boiling water

Suffering forever, I think I am in hell.

That is until I taste the sweetness of my misery.

INTERNATIONAL DAY PREPARATIONSThis past week the Secondary students who were not busy studying every day for their Cambridge Mock Exams were busy rehearsing their skits and dance routines and completing their artworks in preparation for today’s ( September 15th) International Day celebrations at NZIS.

The students across all Year Levels in Secondary were broken up into 3 groups with each group choosing a Continent (Asia, North America & Europe) that they then needed to represent through their clothing choices as well as in a skit and dance that reflected aspects of their chosen continent.

As you can see in the photos the students had a great time preparing for their presentations and it made a nice relaxing break from the last couple weeks of hard study. The students showed a lot of creativity in their artwork, dance choreography and with their short skits.

Well done Secondary!
