The Commonwealth Games 2006- Stage 1Overview: This unit provides students with the basic understanding of the Commonwealth Games and the spirit of multiculturalism and internationalism. Teacher Information Sheet TASK 6 Teacher Resource Sheet

What are the Commonwealth Games? The Commonwealth Games is held every four years and is considered the showpiece for elite sporting athletes. The Games is only available to members of the Commonwealth which are countries that are (or have been in the past) ruled by the British Government. The commonwealth Games is referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’ because most competitors can communicate in the same language as a result of being governed by the British.

How many nations participate in the games? There are 71 nations that compete in the Games representing 6 continents; Asia, Europe, Oceania, North Americas, South America and Africa.

How long have the Games been in operation? The first Commonwealth Games was held in Canada in 1930. Australia has hosted the Games 4 times in total; Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and Melbourne in 2006! There has only been two times in the history of the Games where they have been cancelled due to World War I and World War II.
