Early modern Europe is know for many great
accomplishments such as, the colonization of
America, the advancement in theatre, and the
invention of the movable type printing.
History of Early Modern EuropeThe period is noted for
provoking The French Wars of Religion and the Thirty Years’ War.
Science and advancement in technology became a
formal practice.
The Age of Enlightenment also said to be the Age of Reason was
happening in Europe during this time. The
growth of logic, ethics and rationality lead to the French and American
revolutions and the rise of liberalism.

Early Modern Europe and EnglandThe Elizabethan Era refers to the period between
1558-1603 during the reign of
Queen Elizabeth I (pictured below)
in England.
The Elizabethan Era is greatly know for its
literature. The literature of this time ranged from romance to realism but was primarily dominated
by romance.
Under Queen Elizabeth I England
became a protestant country. This lead to
the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1603).
In 1665 England suffered from a break out of the Bubonic Plague.
Elizabethan’s reign saw a great increase in literacy and achievements in arts.
England established “Poor Laws” which
provided relief for those who were too old or ill
to work.
Wool trade became very
important, and with it came “ wool
churches”. Inscriptions can be found inside churches that read:
“I thank God and ever shall, for it was the
sheep that paid for all”
Daily Life in Elizabethan England
Houses became more about
comfort and less about defense. They began to
have more windows.
Woodwork became very popular in
churches and houses.
During the Elizabethan Era the English built a reputation for
cleanliness.

Feather bedding began to
replace the straw
mattress .
Daily Life in Elizabethan England(Food and Entertainment)
Many new foods were introduced to the English during this era. Among those were chili
peppers, pumpkins, coffee, and avocados.
Lower class consumed mostly bread, beer, dairy
products, and porridge.
Meals for the upper class and nobility were very elaborate. They primarily consumed meat and the presentation of the food was just
as important as the food itself.
Plays became extremely
popular and the English
constructed many theaters. The
most famous of them was The
Globe (pictured left).
William Shakespeare is
the most famous
playwright to come out of Elizabethan
England.
