Activity 1 Refuse or Reuse

Location Classroom Setting Estimated Time 45 minutes

By the end of this activity, members will:

Be able to differentiate between positive and negative thoughts

Be able to differentiate between trash and recycling

Develop qualities of an effective learner

What You Need

1 Recycling bin

1 Packet of index cards with pre written trash and recycle statements

How to Prepare

Warm Welcome 1 Greet members by name as they enter the program area.

2 Engage in meaningful conversations with members.

Community Builder

1

Play Dramatic Adverbs. Give out an adverb to each member and have them say their name in a way that reflects that quality. Explain that adverbs usually end in ly—words like angrily, boastfully, proudly, cautiously, rapidly, slowly, sweetly, shyly, laughingly, eagerly, etc.

2 Each individual then says his or her name the way it is The rest of the group repeats the member’s name in the same way it was shared. (For example, happily, sadly, or slowly, etc.)

Steps to Follow

1 Say, “We live in a world where there are many resources to use. In the midst of using resources, we also dispose of many that can be repurposed and reused.”

2 Ask members what it means to recycle. Allow members to answer. Ask members to share examples of things that can be recycled. Then ask them why it’s important to recycle.

3 Tell members, “Today, we will be exploring recycling and how we can do our part to save the world.

4 Say: “In life we face different things that may make us have negative thoughts. If we focus on these negative thoughts long enough, we can start to believe these thoughts are true.”

5 Ask members to think of a time that they had a negative thought because they made a mistake or had difficulty with a task such as homework.

6 Show members the trashcan and ask, “What is this? What types of things should you place in the trashcan? Is trash something you would ever eat? Why or why not?”

7

Explain to members that sometimes people pollute their minds by putting themselves down. For example, they may talk negatively to themselves by saying things such as, “I am not good enough for the team,” or “This is too hard for me, I can’t do it.” Explain to members that these thoughts should be disposed.

8

Say: “The solution to altering your view is to ask yourself if you have the ability to change whatever you were putting yourself down about. If you can, you should work toward changing it. If it is something you have no control over, think of something to say that will make the situation better. Accept it and figure out how to best respond.

9 Give each member a pre-written statement on an index card and ask them to read it aloud. Tell members to determine if the

Page 10: Early Elementary School O - BGCA

statement should be refused and thrown in the trash, or if it should be recycled and used again. If the statement should be trashed, allow members to throw it into the trashcan, and if it should be recycled, allow members to put it in the recycling bin.

10

Explain to members that when they dispose of negative thoughts, they will have more energy to work toward goals and care more about themselves and others. This will help them not say negative or harmful things, have better friendships and have a strengthened sense of respect for self and others.

Activity 2 Recycled Thoughts

3

Share that it is important for everyone to recognize what is going on in the lives of those around them so that we can come together to celebrate, support and encourage each other in times of need. We should say kind words to one another similar to the ones that we will identify in our next activity.

2 Read the story to the members.

3 Ask members: “What types of jobs did you hear me read? What types of jobs did you see in the photos from the book?” (Record responses on chart paper).

4 Ask members if Strega Nona and Big Anthony are paid for their work, who pays them and why their work may be important to the people paying them.

5

Ask members to compare the work of Strega Nona and Big Anthony. Ask the following questions:

● Who is not responsible? ● Who is responsible? ● What is Big Anthony responsible for? ● Did he do anything irresponsible? What did he do?

Do you think he will make this/these mistake(s) again?

6 Discuss responsibility and the word responsible with members. Ask members what they learned from the story. (Give members time to answer.)

7 Ask members if they have responsibilities at school or at home and if so, they are. Tell members that responsibilities build character and make us better people.

2 Ask members to share something kind they have done this week. Allow members to share their stories.

3 Say, “Today, we will learn more about being kind through the activities we will do.”

5 Allow members to respond to questions and share thoughts with the whole group.

6 Say, “Today, we are going to be good friends and write a letter to two people in our group. The people you write your letter to will be selected when you pull their names from a bag.”

7

Allow members to pull names from the bag. Tell members to write a letter to each person they pulled and include nice qualities they admire about the person. Tell them to put the qualities into three complete sentences. Tell members to draw a picture on the letter.
