    n. 490: The ms. reading ritujant in MHd IX.144cd is (apart from the orthographic riinstead of ) metrically faulty (the syllables 2 and 3 in a pathymust not be both short)and has therefore been emended to tujatvt(cf. TJv P 360a2dus su skye ba yin pa'i phyir).My suggestion to read svpc cps tu (instead of ms. svpnnptu) is based onthe fact that there is no negation in the Tib. translation of the krik and on the fact thatthe TJv takes the whole verse IX.144 as an opponent's argument (introduced by ... gzhansmras pa: D 313b2) refuted only in the subsequent verse (introduced by 'di'i lan ni |: D313b6). To be sure, the reading of the ms., presenting verse 144 as negating theopponent's argument and verse 145 as supplying the appropriate argumentation, is by nomeans unacceptable. But in my opinion the structure as reflected in the Tib. translationand the TJv sounds more natural, the more so since we find the same structure in MH dIX.141 (opponent) and 142 (proponent's counterarguments).

Lindtner (in his edition of the Madhyamakahdaya, Chennai: The AdyarLibrary Research Centre 2001: 169) criticizes me for having emended the text of MHdIX. 146d (gadai ca vyabhicria) to gaai ca vyabhicrit, but actually I have merelystated that this is what the Tibetan translation of the verse seems to presuppose, withoutexpressing any preference for this reading, and my comment on the passage clearlysuggests the opposite. As for my emendation of dohaddyaprasiddhata in IX.146b(kept by Lindtner) to aprasiddhat(with Tib. ma grub nyid), it may be doubtful, a causalphrase being preferable for the argument. But aprasiddhata (suffix tas after aparticiple instead of a noun or an abstract) sounds problematic, and I was unable to findanother instance in the MHd. Perhaps we should emend to aprasiddhita.(cf. MHdV.30d).

    n. 508: As regards MHd IX.145cd, Lindtner (op. cit. p. 108) follows Kawasaki'semendation of the ms. (vyabhicrt tu rpntena sidhyati sacittak, see KAWASAKI1986: 204 n.18) to vyabhicrt tu taravo na sidhyati sacittak. From the point of view of

    meaning, this is impeccable, but I still think that my own emendation (vyabhicrttarte [or tair?] na sidhyati sacittat), amounting largely to the same as regards thepurport, is somewhat closer to the ms.
