Learning the Sine, Cosine, and TangentMitchell County High School Mathematics 2 students in Ms. Theresa Bishop's classes havebeen learning to solve problems related to right triangles using the basic trigonometricratios. These ratios are the sine, cosine, and tangent. After learning the basics in the classroom, the students spent one day in the computer lab working to find the correct set-up for problemsbefore the time was up. Students solved real life problems by first drawing a diagram for thegiven problems. These problems required students to answer such questions as: What shouldbe the ramp’s angle of elevation and what is the distance from an airplane to the controltower? Students made their hypsometers using index cards, straws, string and paper clips. Thehypsometer is used to find the angle of elevation or angle of depression. Working in pairs, thestudents determined the angle measure to the top of

each object and thedistance they stood fromthe object. Using thisinformation and the trigratios, the students wereable to find the height ofvarious objects such asthe height of theflagpole, light pole, atree, and the basketballgoal. Purpose of the CCC (Curriculum Coordinating Council) is…By Christy Wray

Curriculum, instruction, assessment, alignment with standards, professional development…these are all the things that the CurriculumLeadership Institute (CLI) help our school accomplish. One of the ways these goals are achieved is through the creation of a CurriculumCoordinating Council (CCC). The CCC is selected according to the guidelines of the model and provisions of the new curriculum policydocument. The CCC is representative of all district educators and includes board, community, and parent members. Our CLI representativeworks with the CCC, teachers, support staff, administrators, service agencies, and the state department.

Long-range plans are developed that help clarify duties and timelines for each subject area. Subject Area Committees (SAC teams) have beenworking on the long-range plans, including use of staff development strategies to assist in the creation of our common assessments for allgrade levels and subjects. SAC teams include a CCC member and representatives from various grade levels and buildings. The council’sleadership provides direction for all teachers and administrators when implementing the standards-based curriculum. The council is nowguiding the district through the research, feedback, and recommendation process of mastery and standards-based grading and reporting.Changes in grading practices are necessary in order to accurately reflect student learning in a standards-based classroom.

Opportunities for differentiated instruction must be provided by teachers in each classroom. The CCC is responsible for creating plans foradditional learning support and enrichment opportunities that are conducted outside of the classroom. These professional learningopportunities are necessary for teachers in order to effectively develop local assessments. The CCC carefully monitors and analyzes progressand uses the results to make specific plans for the next year. Overall, the CCC reviews and acts on all matters pertaining to externallymandated assessment and accreditation. It organizes actions to assure that required data collection, disaggregation, or other procedures aresystematically merged with the school system’s total improvement plan.

Based on our SACS-CASI recommendation - “Explore a research-based instructional framework to be used throughout the district”, thefollowing items will continue to be a priority for the system: 1) Common vocabulary for the work. Clearly understood curriculum (GPS-whatwe are to teach); 2) Pacing Guides (When we are to teach the GPS, a timeline that is revised yearly and tied to the current academic calendar);3) Unit Plan (We are supposed to be using CLI’s Unit Resource Plan); 4) Assessments (both formative and summative); 5) RTI (Whathappens if a child doesn’t get it? When will the intervention take place? What is the intervention? Does everyone understand the plan forsafety nets and structured review?); 6) Formal job embedded professional learning structure (Common planning time? Agendas that reflectworking on the work of curriculum/instruction/student learning rather than social/operational concerns).

Thank you to the following “original” CCC members for your years of service and your commitment to students and high quality education inthe Mitchell County School System. Terms limits are three years, so several of the teachers are rotating off for the 2009-2010 school year.Original CCC Members: Christy Wray, Sherilyn Jones, Rosemary Dudley Sanders, LaJuana Smith, Silvana Jenkins, Lu Bullard, JoanneOdoms, Constance Lee, Ruth Lee, Nathaniel Crimbley (PS Parent/Community Person), Sheila Broadwater (MS Parent/Community Person),Vicki Hicks Jackson, Jacquelyn White, Rodney Bullard, Robert Adams, Barbara Reddick (Board Member), Beauford Hicks.
