RECREATION, CAMPING AND THE ENVIRONMENTThe Chiangmai YMCA in Thailand, through its YMCA Peace School, provides youth leadership development and recreation programs to teach children language skills, social outreach, dance and environmental awareness. The Y works with young leaders to organize community action initiatives such as addressing global warming, advancing recycling efforts, serving elderly neighbors and more.

“ The YMCA allows people to gain a better understanding of environmental and energy issues and become more aware about global warming and climate change. Our programs provide a chance for youth to obtain information and work together on environmental initiatives.”

— Chularat Phongthadsirikul Associate General Secretary, Chiangmai YMCA

EDUCATION The Philippines YMCA centers operate in an environment subject to regular natural disasters, including typhoons, earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanic eruptions, which heighten the risk for poverty, unemployment and family displacement. In response, the YMCA provides educational programs for children, adults and families that incorporate resilience, survival and microenterprise skills to prepare them for rebuilding their lives after natural disasters.

“ The Y has been my refuge and source of strength. I spend most of my time at the Y weaving baskets and ornaments to sell, in order to feed my kids. Now, three of my daughters are college graduates and working regularly.”

— Marlyn Cinames Women’s Empowerment Program Participant, Albay YMCA

EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTIn Peru, many women lack access to employment and those who do earn 30% less, on average, than men - sometimes as little as 60 cents per hour. To address these institutional inequities, the Peru YMCA’s Entrepreneurship Program provides business training and microloans to more than 150 women, giving them the opportunity to start or expand a business to earn a stable living.

“ I thought it would be impossible to overcome poverty, but with the support of the YMCA, I made my dreams a beautiful reality. My children do not have to work in the streets any longer.”

— Nancy Vergara Economic Empowerment Program Participant, Peru YMCA

YOUTH LEADERSHIP CIVIC ENGAGEMENT The Sierra Leone YMCA trained 100 young volunteers to advance peace-building efforts in their communities and support a free, nonviolent election. These YMCA Peace Ambassadors received training in the Constitution, electoral laws and conflict resolution, emphasizing mediation and respect of human rights, to help monitor the election process.

“ Our youth volunteers are trained to promote coexistence and mindfulness in the community and have demonstrated outstanding civic leadership to ensure that everyone can participate in a peaceful democratic process.”
