Dedicated in September, 2002, the Thomas

D. Trainor Scout Museum is the former D-

bar-A Scout Ranch administration building. It

was provided to the Order of the Arrow’s

Migisi Opawgan Lodge 162 to be converted

into a 1,100 square foot museum.

Constructed in 1950 at a cost of $8,000, it

was the first new building at the recently ac-

quired Boy Scout property known as D-bar-A

Scout Ranch. It is constructed of cinder

blocks and clad with wood paneling. During

the OA Lodge remodeling of the building, a

small apartment with a kitchen was added for

weekend hosts to stay. The apartment also

serves as a meeting location for curators to

evaluate and log Scout memorabilia donated or loaned to

the museum for display. The building today is valued over

$90,000 excluding the contents and is the largest Scouting

Museum in Michigan.

Saturdays 9:00 to 11:30 am and 1:00 to 5:00 pm

Units wanting to visit the museum on Friday evening,

Saturday evening or Sunday must coordinate with the

weekend museum hosts.

at the Martin Building check-in to confirm museum

6. Tug-of-War – parallel to the walkway and halfway between the B. P. House and Museum.

7. Noodle Hoops Challenge – immediately behind the B. P. House.

8. Blind Man Maze – between the B. P. House and Museum, but more close to the road running to the Friendship Center.

9. Sumo Wrestling – adjacent to the Museum on the east side of apartment.

10. Milk Crate Stacking Challenge – Across the parking lot on the hill towards the flag pole.

11. Snow Fort & Igloo Building – on the north side of the patch leading from the parking lot to Wyckoff Lodge.

12. Dog Musher Demonstration—on the hill by the main flag pole.

13. Sled Hill— East of the Wyckoff Lodge. UNIT LEADERS NEED TO SUPERVISE YOUR SCOUTS FOR THIS ACTIVITY. SLEDS ARE NOT PROVIDED.

History of the “Scouts own” Statue

The Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, MI acquired one of Alphonso Pelzer’s Lincoln statues in 1914. The Lincoln statue was placed in the Packard Administration Building visitor’s lobby where it remained until 1919 when it was placed in storage because of building alterations. It remained in storage, more or less forgotten, until at the suggestion of William C. Greany, Scoutmaster of Troop 194, that the statue be given to the Detroit Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. It was moved to Boy Scout Camp Brady in Water-ford, Oakland County, Michigan and was offi-cially dedicated as a memorial on July 25, 1936.

In April 1946, Camp Brady was sold and the statue was moved to Charles Howell Scout Reservation, Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan. In December 1986, Charles Howell Scout Reservation was sold. In 1988, the O-A Lodge raised $5000.00 to restore the statue and it was moved to D-Bar-A Scout Ranch and in April 1990 a gazebo was constructed in the name of Harold Oatley, longtime Scouter and former O-A Lodge Adviser. Outside the gazebo are two memorials – one to Harold Oatley in 1990 and the other to George R. E. A. Thomas in February 1996. George Thom-as was a Lincoln historian and one of the founders of the modern Lincoln Pilgrimage; which began in 1936. The 1990 gazebo was destroyed by falling trees during a storm and the Lincoln statue was moved across the road to a brick pedestal and new gazebo outside the Thomas D. Trainor Scout Museum paid for through a generous donation of Jeff Camp-bell. There it lies in state as being the ONLY Boy Scout Owned life-sized Lincoln Statue in the Country.

Every year, hundreds of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts make the pilgrimage to D-bar-A Scout Ranch for a re-dedication ceremony to honor the life of a truly great leader, Abraham Lincoln. The event is traditionally held in February each year.
