εκθεση «Γκίκασ, CRAxTON, LEIGH

FERMOR: η γοητεία της ζωής στην Ελλάδα», που φιλοξενείται εφέτος στο Μου-

σείο Μπενάκη, αντανακλά τις μαγευτικές εξερευνήσεις των τριών μεγάλων δημι-

ουργών στην Ελλάδα του περασμένου αιώνα. Η έκθεση παρουσιάζει, μέσα από

τα κείμενα του Πάτρικ Λι Φέρμορ και το ζωγραφικό έργο του Νίκου Χατζηκυ-

ριάκου-Γκίκα και του Τζον Κράξτον, τις μαγευτικές εξερευνήσεις τους κατά τη

διάρκεια της ζωής τους, με έμπνευση από την Ύδρα, την Καρδαμύλη, την Κρή-

τη και την Κέρκυρα. Το έργο τους δεν καταδεικνύει μόνο την αγάπη τους για την

Ελλάδα –την ιστορία, τον μύθο, την ύπαιθρο και τον ελληνικό τρόπο ζωής. Μέ-

σα από πίνακες, φωτογραφίες και κείμενα των τριών δημιουργών, η έκθεση επι-

διώκει να αντικατοπτρίσει τις συναρπαστικές αναζητήσεις τους, τις μεταξύ τους

αλληλεπιδράσεις, καθώς και την αφοσίωσή τους στη χαρά της ζωής. Το 1945

και το 1946 είναι τα χρόνια γνωριμίας των τριών δημιουργών.

Ο Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας γνωρίζει τον Τζον Κράξτον και τον Πάτρικ

Λι Φέρμορ στο Λονδίνο, ενώ αργότερα οι δύο τελευταίοι συναντιούνται στην

Αθήνα. Η φιλία ανάμεσα στους τρεις άνδρες αποδείχθηκε ιδιαίτερα ανθεκτική,

αφού διήρκησε για πενήντα περίπου χρόνια και αναπτύχθηκε με κοινό σημείο

αναφοράς την αγάπη τους για την Ελλάδα. Η Ελλάδα αποτελούσε αναπόσπα-

στο μέρος της σχέσης τους και συνάμα έμπνευση, που φανερώνεται σε κάθε

πτυχή του έργου τους. Εκτός από την Αθήνα και το Λονδίνο, τέσσερις ακόμη

τόποι επισφράγισαν τη φιλία τους: η Ύδρα, η Καρδαμύλη, η Κρήτη και η Κέρκυ-

ρα. Είναι ακριβώς οι τόποι όπου επέλεξαν να ζήσουν. Η Ύδρα συνιστά ένα ση-

μαντικό κεφάλαιο στη ζωή και των τριών φίλων, αλλά και έναν πόλο έλξης Ελλή-

νων και ξένων διανοούμενων και καλλιτεχνών.

Για τον Γκίκα ήταν το σπίτι των παιδικών του χρόνων και αργότερα το καταφύ-

γιό του, ο τόπος έμπνευσής του. Για τον Λι Φέρμορ, «μια πηγή ευτυχίας», όπως

έλεγε ο ίδιος, ένα ησυχαστήριο για συγγραφή. Το 1947 ο Τζον Κράξτον επι-

in Greece” is the title of the exhibition hosted this year by benaki Museum. The

exhibition reflects the magical moments of the expedition of three major artists

in Greece of the past century. nikos hadjikyriakos-Ghikas and John Craxton’s

paintings are exhibited along with Patrick leigh fermor’s manuscripts and pho-

tos of all three of them reviving their trips in hydra, Kardamyli, Crete and Corfu.

Their literary and artistic work is an evidence of their deep love for Greece –its

mythology, history, landscape and lifestyle, but most of all, of their own friend-

ship, their shared values for the joy of life and their willingness to explore it.

Artists met each other for the first time between 1945 and 1946. nikos hadjik-

yriakos-Ghikas made the acquaintances of John Craxton and Patrick leigh fer-

mor in london, and later on Craxton and fermor met in Athens. The friend-

ship among the three men was strong enough to last for a life time mainly

stemming from their love for Greece. This love would form an integral part of

their art works, inspired by the places they chose to live in during their stay in

Greece. So apart from london and Athens, their meeting points were hydra,

Kardamyli, Crete and Corfu.

The Saronic island of hydra was a top destination for both Greek and foreign

intellectuals and artists, and the place where the three friends spent a signifi-

cant part of their lives. Ghikas spent his childhood in hydra, where he repeat-

edly returned to, whenever been seeking shelter of inspiration. Patrick leigh

fermor used to call it “a spring of joy” or the perfect place for writing in peace.

in 1947, John Craxton visited Crete for the first time in his life and one year lat-

er, he goes back to the island in order to draw Cretan shepherds. Craxton was

fascinated by Cretan people and landscape and thus, in 1960 decided to make

his dream come true and moved to Chania, Crete.

σκέπτεται για πρώτη φορά την Κρήτη και, όταν ξαναγυρίζει έναν χρόνο αργό-

τερα, ζωγραφίζει έργα με θέμα τους Κρητικούς βοσκούς. Ο τόπος και οι άν-

θρωποι τον γοητεύουν και έτσι το 1960, αποφασίζει να ακολουθήσει το όνειρό

του και να ζήσει στα Χανιά.

Ο Λι Φέρμορ ανακαλύπτει τον δικό του παράδεισο-καταφύγιο στην Καρ-

δαμύλη. Ο φίλος του, ο Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας, γοητευμένος από τη φύση του

τόπου, ζωγραφίζει τοπία της περιοχής και δημιουργεί έργα για τη διακόσμηση

του σπιτιού. Εκεί ο Λι Φέρμορ θα αφοσιωθεί στη συγγραφή. Ανάμεσα στα έργα

του είναι: «Το Δέντρο του Ταξιδιώτη» (1950), «Μάνη - Ταξίδια στη νότια Πε-

λοπόννησο» (1958), «Ρούμελη» (1966), «Η Εποχή της Δωρεάς - Πεζός στην

Κωνσταντινούπολη: Από το Χουκ της Ολλανδίας στον Μέσο Δούναβη» (1977),

«Τρία Γράμματα από τις Άνδεις» (1991).

Τελευταίος σταθμός, η Κέρκυρα. Ένα παλιό ελαιοτριβείο στις Σινιές της

Κέρκυρας θα αποτελέσει τον νέο τόπο συνάντησης και δημιουργίας από

τη δεκαετία του ’70 για τους Γκίκα, Κράξτον και Λι Φέρμορ. Εκεί ο Γκίκας

θα δημιουργήσει ένα νέο «ειδυλλιακό σκηνικό», «ένα καταφύγιο μοναδικής

ατμόσφαιρας και γοητείας», που θα μοιραστεί και θα εμπνεύσει και τους

τρεις φίλους. Εκεί η τέχνη τους, τα λογοτεχνικά τους κείμενα και οι ζωές τους

ενώθηκαν μέσα από μια στενή φιλία και επηρεάστηκαν από την εξερεύνηση

ενός τόπου που ήταν η πατρίδα του ενός μονάχα. Δουλεύοντας πλάι πλάι,

μοιράστηκαν και εμπνεύστηκαν από το ελληνικό φως και τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό,

αλλά και από την κοινή εμπειρία του να ζεις στην Ελλάδα εκείνης της εποχής

και εκείνων των συγκυριών.

Patrick leigh fermor discovered his own hidden paradise in Kardamyli, Pelo-

ponnese. his friend, hadjikyriakos-Ghikas charmed by the natural beauties of

the area, paints inspired by the local scenery while also creating pieces for home

decoration. in Kardamyli, fermor devoted to his writing, he would complete

“The Traveler’s Tree”(1950), “Mani - Travels in the Southern Peloponnese”

(1958), “roumeli - Travels in northern Greece” (1966), “A Time of Gifts - On

foot to Constantinople: from the hook of holland to the Middle Danube”

(1977), and “Three letter from the Andes” (1991).

Their last destination was the island of Corfu. An old oil mill in Sinies would be

their new meeting point, in the 1970s, where Ghikas, Craxton and fermor were

devoted to their art. Ghikas described Sinies as his “new ideal scenery” and “a

refuge of unique atmosphere and charm” to share with his friends. Their paint-

ing and writing would be inspired by their common time together exploring

the home country of only one of them. Working side by side, they enjoyed the

Greek sunlight and culture and shared their experiences of living in Greece un-

der the circumstances that prevailed at that time.

ναΛΛακΤίκα, θα Τον ονομαζαμε σύμφωνα με

τον τρόπο που έγινε παγκόσμια γνωστός: ως το «αστέρι του Μπακού». Ναι, ο κο-

ρυφαίος –για πολλούς, όλων των εποχών– παίκτης σκακιού στον κόσμο γεννήθηκε

στο σημερινό Αζερμπαϊτζάν, που τότε αποτελούσε τμήμα της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης.

Στη συνέντευξή μας εμφανίστηκε απλός αλλά και χειμαρρώδης στις απαντήσεις του,

κάτι που μαρτυρούσε μια σκέψη που με κόπο ακολουθούσε ο λόγος. Εκτός από τα

τέσσερα παιδιά του, αν έπρεπε να αναδείξουμε έναν αφανή ήρωα αυτής της συνέ-

ντευξης, τότε σίγουρα αυτός θα ήταν η Αρμένισσα μητέρα του, Κλάρα. Αυτή που

του έλεγε πως πρέπει πάντα να κάνει τη διαφορά.

Πώς θα εξηγούσατε σε κάποιον που δεν σας ξέρει το πάθος σας για το σκάκι;

Δοκιμάζετε τη μνήμη μου. Το πρώτο μου παιχνίδι στο σκάκι ήταν τον χειμώνα του

’68 προς ’69 –δεν θυμάμαι τη μέρα, γιατί κανείς δεν υπήρχε τότε να κάνει ένα tweet

γι’ αυτό (γελάει)– και ήταν ένας έρωτας με την πρώτη ματιά! Είχα μαγευτεί απ’ αυτά

τα ξύλινα πιόνια της σκακιέρας που είχαν αγοράσει οι γονείς μου καθώς και από τις

μυστήριες κινήσεις τους. Από την πρώτη στιγμή, και αυτό το συναίσθημα δεν άλ-

λαξε μέχρι σήμερα, ένιωθα πολύ άνετα με το να παίζω, να βλέπω, να μελετώ σκάκι.

Τώρα μπορεί να μην παίζω, αλλά απολαμβάνω απεριόριστα το να βλέπω παιχνίδια.

Είναι μέρος του εαυτού μου. Νιώθω πολύ τυχερός που βρήκα αυτό που ήθελα να

κάνω στη ζωή μου: το κατάλληλο σημείο για εμένα.

Ποια θα ήταν η συμβουλή σας σε κάποιον που θέλει και αυτός να βρει το δικό

του «κατάλληλο σημείο» ή, αλλιώς, τον προσωπικό, μοναδικό δρόμο του στη

ζωή; Μπορεί να κάνεις τα πάντα σωστά, αλλά χρειάζεσαι και λίγο τύχη. Η μόνη μου

συμβουλή είναι να προσπαθήσεις. Και είναι πολύ σημαντικό να θυμάσαι ότι ο κα-

θένας έχει ένα ταλέντο. Στο 99% των περιπτώσεων, το ταλέντο δεν ανακαλύπτεται,

ίσως από έλλειψη ευκαιριών. Σε μέρη όπως την Αφρική ή την Ασία, δεν υπάρχουν οι

ίδιες ευκαιρίες. Θα συμβούλευα τους γονείς, όμως, να είναι πιο «επιθετικοί» σε ό,τι

αφορά στο κυνήγι των ευκαιριών. Πρέπει πολύ απλά να βρεις το «κατάλληλο ση-

μείο» στο οποίο το παιδί σου είναι καλύτερο από τα άλλα. Η τεχνολογία και τα μέ-

questions and revealed a profound way of thinking. Talking about his four children,

he could not but mention Clara, his own mother and unsung heroine of Armenian

origin and her motto “Garry, you should always make the difference”.

How would you describe your passion for chess? let me think. My first game was

in winter of 1968-69 –i cannot recall the exact day as there was no Twitter at the

time (he laughs)– and it was real love at first sight! i was amazed by the mysterious

movements of those wooden chess pieces that mum and dad had bought me. i

fell in love from the very first moment i touched them and this is exactly how i feel

ever after. for me the pleasure is equal either in playing, studying or watching chess,

with the latter being what i mostly do lately. i feel very lucky to having found my

walk of life in chess or to put it better, chess is a part of me; it is actually who i am.

so, what would be your advice to someone trying to find their own “walk of

life?” you may do everything right but you still need some luck to make it in life. My

only advice would be to never quit trying. it is very important to remember that we

all have a talent. in 99% of cases, people would not reveal their talent out of luck of

opportunities. in places like Africa or Asia, there are no equal opportunities. how-

ever, i would advise parents to be –let’s say– more “aggressive” in chasing these

opportunities. We, parents, simply have to find out what our kid does better than

the others. Technology and social media help a great deal in this. it is not that dif-

ficult to find out. being a father of four myself, i know pretty well that all it takes is

to give your child a boost to try. it is kind of an investment, like banks do. School is

important too but family has the primary role in this part.

What was the most daring moment in your career? in chess too, i always

did what i knew to do best. i would not say that i had any daring moments at

δεν απαιτεί κάποια ιδιαίτερη προσπάθεια. Το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα για την οικο-

γένεια, μην ξεχνάτε ότι κι εγώ είμαι πατέρας τεσσάρων παιδιών, είναι να ωθήσει τα

παιδιά να κάνουν μια προσπάθεια. Είναι σαν τράπεζα, κάνεις μια επένδυση. Το σχο-

λείο είναι σημαντικό, αλλά σε αυτό που ρωτάτε, η οικογένεια έχει ζωτική σημασία.

Ποια ήταν η πιο τολμηρή στιγμή στην καριέρα σας; Στο σκάκι, έκανα αυτό που

ήξερα καλύτερα. Δεν θα χαρακτήριζα κάποια στιγμή μου ως τολμηρή. Έπαιζα το

παιχνίδι, ήθελα να γίνω παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής, πήρα μεγάλες αποφάσεις, αλλά

ό,τι έκανα ήταν πολύ φυσικό. Τώρα σε άλλα πράγματα, για παράδειγμα το 1985, στο

πρώτο μου ματς με τον Κάρποφ στη Μόσχα, ενώ υπήρχε ακόμα η Σοβιετική Ένω-

ση, πριν τον Γκορμπατσόφ και την Περεστρόικα, πήρα το ρίσκο να διαφωνήσω με

το καθεστώς και την απόφαση του florencio Campomanes να αναβάλει το παιχνί-

δι. Εκείνη την εποχή, οι άνθρωποι του περιβάλλοντός μου έλεγαν ότι ήμουν ηλίθιος!

Έγινα παρ’ όλ’ αυτά ο πιο νέος παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής. Δεν ξέρω αν ήταν τολ-

μηρό, το έκανα ενστικτωδώς, γιατί ήθελα να πάρω μια θέση απέναντι στο καθεστώς

της χώρας μου. Στο σκάκι, όπως και στις business αλλά και στη ζωή, μια σωστή κί-

νηση μπορεί να κάνει τη διαφορά. Πρέπει να συγκεντρωθείς και να αφουγκραστείς

την κατάλληλη στιγμή. Τότε παίρνεις το ρίσκο. Αν χάσεις αυτή τη στιγμή, η επόμενη

ευκαιρία θα αργήσει να εμφανιστεί. Τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1990, σε μία αναμέτρησή

μου με τον Κάρποφ, αρνήθηκα να παίξω με τη σημαία της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, ζή-

τησα τη ρωσική σημαία. Ήταν 15 μήνες πριν την κατάρρευση της Σοβιετικής Ένω-

σης. Αυτή ήταν επίσης μία μεγάλη απόφαση!

Τι θα λέγατε για την αποχώρησή σας από την επίσημη διοργάνωση του παγκό-

σμιου πρωταθλήματος σκακιού; Αυτή δεν ήταν τόσο τολμηρή όσο ορθολογική

απόφαση. Ήταν και συναισθηματική. Τι βοηθάει για μία μεταβατική κατάσταση τέ-

τοιου τύπου; Δώδεκα χρόνια μετά την αποχώρησή μου, δημιούργησα ένα σημα-

ντικό κομμάτι της ζωής μου εκτός σκακιού. Αν και εδώ που τα λέμε, έχει πάλι σχέ-

all. i played the game wanting to become a world champion, i made serious

decisions on the way, and all this is pretty normal to me. i could recall some

special moments, though, such as my first game with Karpov in Moscow, then

uSSr, back in 1985, before Gorbatsev and Perestroika, when i decided to argue

with the regime and florencio Campomanes’ decision to postpone the game.

People then close to me told me that i was nothing but an idiot! Maybe, but i

did become the youngest world champion in the history of chess. i cannot tell

whether this was a daring thing to do, for i only did it spontaneously aiming to

stand up against the regime that then ruled my home country. in chess like in

business and in life alike, a correct movement can make the difference. All you

need to do is to focus and wait for the right moment. Then you take the risk.

in September 1990, i competed again Karpov while denying to take part as a

member of the uSSr team. instead i asked for a russian flag. This happened

15 months before the fall of the Soviet union. This too, i consider it to be an

important decision in my life!

do you have anything to say about you having quit the official world chess

championship tournament? This was a rather rational than daring decision of

mine. And an emotional one too. Does this do any good to a transitional stage

of this kind? Twelve years after quitting the championship, i took care of an

important part of my life outside chess. Well not exactly to be honest, when

considering that my new endeavors still have to do with chess: i created the

Kasparov foundation for the promotion of chess and helped young profes-

sionals to get involved with the game at a much higher level. Meanwhile, i am

a political activist with a very strong presence in the social media. Well, i may

still hear my mother’s voice telling me that “chess is not whether you win or

lose; it’s whether you make the difference or not.” So, the right time to make

the difference is when you are still in the game. This takes you higher enabling

to discover new things on your way to perfection! OK, i could still be no.1 for

πεδο. Παράλληλα είμαι πολιτικός ακτιβιστής, με τεράστια παρουσία στα μέσα κοι-

νωνικής δικτύωσης. Όλα αυτά τα κάνω υπό την καθοδήγηση της φράσης που μου

έλεγε η μητέρα μου, «το σκάκι είναι θέμα νίκης ή ήττας. Αλλά το πιο σημαντικό είναι

να κάνεις τη διαφορά». Όσο λοιπόν είσαι δεσμευμένος με το παιχνίδι, τότε πρέπει

να κάνεις τη διαφορά. Αυτό σε ωθεί σε καινούργιες ανακαλύψεις. Γιατί προσπαθώ-

ντας να κάνεις τη διαφορά, προκαλείς την ίδια την τελειότητα! Θα μπορούσα λοι-

πόν να είμαι νούμερο 1 για δύο ακόμα χρόνια, αλλά προς τι; Δεν θα είχε καμία δι-

αφορά. Ήταν μια απόφαση που πήρα τον Μάρτιο του 2005 και έβλεπα ότι όλοι οι

παράγοντες συνηγορούσαν υπέρ της.

Μπορείτε να εξηγήσετε την απόφασή σας με ένα παράδειγμα; Ναι, θα σας πω το

παράδειγμα που μου έδωσε συναισθηματική ώθηση. Το 1997, έπαιξα σε τουρνουά

και κέρδισα. Στη συνέντευξη Τύπου που ακολούθησε μετά τη λήξη, οι δημοσιογρά-

φοι με ρώτησαν, «κύριε Κασπάροφ, είστε παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής εδώ και χρόνια.

Υπάρχει κάτι που δεν έχετε εκπληρώσει στο παιχνίδι του σκακιού, έχετε όνειρα;»

Ήταν Ιούνιος του 1997, ο γιος μου από τον προηγούμενο γάμο μου είχε γεννηθεί

τον Οκτώβριο της προηγούμενης χρονιάς. Και είπα, «θα ήθελα να μεγαλώσει ο γιος

μου, για να δει τον πατέρα του να κερδίζει στο σκάκι». Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2004,

έπαιξα στο ρωσικό πρωτάθλημα και το κέρδισα, ενώ εκείνος ήταν 8 ετών. Όταν πή-

ρα το χρυσό μετάλλιο και το έβαλα στον λαιμό του, κατάλαβα ότι το «τέλος» μου

ως επαγγελματία παίκτη πλησίαζε. Την επόμενη χρονιά, αποχώρησα από το σκάκι.

Από πότε αρχίσατε να ανακαλύπτετε ομοιότητες ανάμεσα στο σκάκι και τη

ζωή; Ο κόσμος με ρωτάει για αυτή τη σύνδεση, που έκανα και σε ένα βιβλίο μου για

το σκάκι και τη ζωή. Η απάντησή μου είναι ότι δεν υπάρχει καμία απευθείας σύνδε-

ση, αλλά οτιδήποτε κάνεις επαγγελματικά σε βοηθά να αναλύεις άλλα πράγματα.

Όταν ασχολείσαι με το σκάκι σε αυτό το επίπεδο, τότε αρχίζεις να αναλύεις κάθε

απόφαση που παίρνεις. Και τότε αρχίζεις να την εφαρμόζεις και σε άλλους τομείς

to quit in March 2005.

Could you please explain this decision by giving us an example? yes, to give

you an example that had emotionally driven me is that of a winning tournament

in 1997. At the press conference that followed the game, journalists would ask

me “Mr. Kasparov, you are a world champion for many years now. is there any

missing target for you chess-wise speaking? Do you still have dreams?” That

was in June 1997 and my son from my previous marriage was born in October

of the previous year. So i just said that “i want my son to grow up enough to

see his dad winning in chess.” by December 2004, when i played at the russian

championship and won, my son had become 8 years old. So i took the golden

medal and wore it around my son’s neck to realize that this was the end for me

as a professional chess player and the following year i quit.

How is the game of chess similar to life? People keep asking me about this

connection that i made in one of my books between chess and life. My answer

is that there is no direct connection whatsoever. however, our work life

experiences can help us in analyzing many other things too. Playing chess at

such a high level makes you analyze every single decision on all aspects of your

life. your ability to play chess has to do with the game itself. Thereon, it depends

on you and there are only few chess players who use their chess skills in other

things they do with their lives. it is not an automatic process. it is a connection

you have to make on your own, as if you were to build a bridge to walk on it. but

again, thanks to my mother, i personally saw chess as a part of the big picture. i

wanted to become a world champion aiming to change something. So, for me

chess was and still is my most powerful mean to cope with reality.

What are the key mindset qualities of successful chess players? Decisiveness,

της ζωής σου. Η ικανότητά σου να παίζεις σκάκι έχει να κάνει με το ίδιο το παιχνίδι.

Από εκεί και πέρα, εξαρτάται από σένα –και είναι πολύ λίγοι παίκτες σκακιού που

το έχουν κάνει– να εφαρμόσεις αυτές τις επιδεξιότητες σε άλλα πράγματα. Δεν εί-

ναι όμως αυτόματο, είναι μια σύνδεση που πρέπει να κατασκευαστεί. Μοιάζει πε-

ρισσότερο με το χτίσιμο μιας γέφυρας. Και πάλι, χάρη στη μητέρα μου έβλεπα το

σκάκι ως μέρος μιας μεγαλύτερης εικόνας. Θέλω να γίνω παγκόσμιος πρωταθλη-

τής, για να αλλάξω κάτι. Άρα, για μένα το σκάκι είναι το πιο ισχυρό εργαλείο για να

διαχειριστώ την πραγματικότητα.

Ποια είναι τα «κλειδιά», σε επίπεδο ψυχολογίας, που κάνουν κάποιον επιτυχημέ-

νο παίκτη στο σκάκι; Πρέπει να είσαι αποφασισμένος, φιλόπονος, ανθεκτικός στις

ήττες, να επιβιώνεις κάτω απ’ αυτή την πίεση. Είναι οι ίδιες αρετές που θα σε έκαναν

νούμερο ένα στο επάγγελμά σου. Οι τοπ παίκτες του σκακιού όπως ο Κάρποφ, εγώ,

ο Κάρλσεν, έχουν διαφορετικά στυλ, σύμφωνα με τον χαρακτήρα τους. Εγώ παίζω

πιο επιθετικά από τον Κάρποφ. Αλλά αυτό δεν είναι καλό ή κακό. Το να παίζουν οι

Ιταλοί αμυντικό ποδόσφαιρο δεν είναι κακό, είναι θέμα στυλ. Οι Βραζιλιάνοι μπορεί

να είναι πιο επιθετικοί. Όποιο και να είναι το στυλ σου, αυτό δεν σε εμποδίζει να νι-

κήσεις. Γι’ αυτό δεν πρέπει να ψάχνεις για ιδιαιτερότητες αλλά για πιο βασικά πράγ-

ματα, όπως το πώς επιβιώνει ο καθένας κάτω από συνθήκες πίεσης. Παίξαμε πολ-

λά παιχνίδια με τον Κάρποφ. Το σκορ ήταν πάντα κοντά στην ισοπαλία. Όταν όμως

ο κίνδυνος του να χαθεί η παρτίδα έφτανε στο αποκορύφωμα, τότε κέρδιζα εγώ.

Τι σας έκανε τόσο ανθεκτικό; Είναι ένα ακόμα μάθημα από τη μητέρα μου: χάνεις,

μόνο όταν σταματάς να παλεύεις. Ακόμα και αν χάσεις μια μάχη, μπορείς πάντα να

κερδίσεις τον πόλεμο.

hard work, ability to recover from failure and work under pressure. These are the

key qualities of success in any vocation one might choose. Top chess players like

Karpov, me or Carlsen have our own individual style. for instance my game is more

aggressive than Karpov’s. This is not necessarily bad or good. italians play football

less aggressively than brazilians but this does not prevent them from winning. Style

has nothing to do with wining the game. instead of seeking for particularities, it

is better to stick on basic things like how to survive under pressure. i competed

Karpov many times and games would almost seem to come to a draw, before i

made my last movement and won.

What did it make you so strong? Oh, that’s another lesson that i learned from

my mother: you only lose when you stop fighting. you may lose a battle but you

can still win the war.

μπιονίκης (Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες Ατλάντα 1996), αργυρός ολυμπιονίκης (Ολυμπια-

κοί Αγώνες Αθήνας 2004), έχει κατακτήσει τρία Παγκόσμια Πρωταθλήματα (1996,

2000, 2001) και επίσης δύο αργυρά μετάλλια (1995, 2003) και ένα χάλκινο (1992),

κυκλοφορεί τόσο διακριτικά ανάμεσά μας.

Γιατί ο Νίκος Κακλαμανάκης είναι ένας χαμηλών τόνων αθλητής, ο οποίος χαμογε-

λά και πάντα έχει κάτι να σου μεταδώσει. Σε κάθε απορία ή ερώτηση, υπάρχει μια

συγκροτημένη, ψύχραιμη και τεκμηριωμένη απάντηση, η οποία έρχεται να επιβε-

Πώς είναι η ζωή ενός ολυμπιονίκη, κύριε Κακλαμανάκη; Αυτή είναι μία ερώτηση

που θα μπορούσα να σας την απαντήσω σε ένα λεπτό αλλά και σε πολλές ώρες…

Σίγουρα είναι μία πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ζωή, από δύο πλευρές: και από την πλευρά

που ζω εγώ, αλλά και από αυτή που με αντιμετωπίζουν οι άλλοι. Η ζωή μου, πρέπει

να παραδεχτώ, είναι πλέον πίσω από έναν μεγεθυντικό φακό. Όμως εγώ προσωπι-

κά ζω με τον ίδιο τρόπο, προσπαθώ να μην αλλάζω, αν και όλα και όλοι γύρω μας

αλλάζουν. Συνεχίζω να λατρεύω τον ήλιο, τη θάλασσα, τα παιδιά, όλα όσα λάτρευα

και πριν. Το μεγάλο στοίχημα για μένα είναι να μην αλλάξω, την ώρα που όλα γύρω

μου αλλάζουν –και μιλώ για τη ματιά του κόσμου. Η τεράστια ανταμοιβή μου είναι

η αγάπη του κόσμου. Για κάποιους, το ολυμπιακό μετάλλιο είναι το πιο σημαντικό.

Για μένα, πάνω από αυτό είναι η ολυμπιακή ιδέα. Το στεφάνι από αγριελιά, ο κότι-

νος. Και το ανώτερο μετάλλιο είναι η αγάπη του κόσμου και τα χαμόγελα. Οι ανώ-

τερες ιδέες μάς οδηγούν στα μεγάλα πράγματα. Αυτό προσπαθώ να μάθω και στα

παιδιά στα οποία μιλάω κάθε φορά. Στο τέλος, τους λέω πως τα δικά τους χαμό-

γελα είναι τα πιο σημαντικά μετάλλια για μένα. Το να έχεις αξίες και να αγωνίζεσαι

για κάτι ανώτερο είναι ό,τι πιο σημαντικό. Στα παιδιά λέω ακόμη ότι όταν ξεκίνησα,

δεν ήμουν πλούσιος, γιατί δεν είχα τα μέσα. Ήμουν όμως πλούσιος, γιατί είχα ένα

όραμα και πίστεψα σε αυτό.

Τα παιδιά συνήθως τι σας ρωτούν; Από τα πιο συχνά ερωτήματα είναι το «πώς

αισθάνομαι». Είναι κι ένα μεγάλο κομμάτι του βιβλίου που ετοιμάζω αυτή την πε-

ρίοδο. Το πέρασμά μου από το ξενοδοχείο hilton είναι συμβολικό, γιατί είναι ένα

μέρος στο οποίο καταγράφω ένα μεγάλο κομμάτι του βιβλίου μου. Το υπόλοιπο

A GOLD MEDALIST AT THE ATLANTA OLyMPIC GAMES (1996) and a

silver medalist at the Athens Olympic Games (2004) in Sailing, an athlete who

has won three World Championships (1996, 2000, 2001) and also two sil-

ver medals (1995, 2003) and a bronze medal (1992), lives amongst us in the

most discreet way.

for this is who nikos Kaklamanakis is in brief: a low profile athlete with a big

smile and the will to share his experience with other people. his answers to

our all questions in a poise, calm and well documented way, come as an evi-

dence of the theory of successful people being plain and absolutely goal-ori-

ented. During our conversation, nikos Kaklamanakis happily accepted to be

photographed with the guests of the hilton Athens that recognized him and

asked for an autograph. he never stopped smiling while being polite and total-

ly cooperative in his own shiny way, stemming from a strong inner energy and

power that comes with all accomplished personalities such as these of Olym-

pic medalists, who manage to share their visions based on common ideals and

vational speaker and leadership trainer in schools, sport clubs and private en-

Mr. Kaklamanakis, how would you describe the life of an olympic medalist?

To make the long story short, i would tell you that it is certainly a very interesting

life, both from the way i see myself and the way people see me. however, i have

to admit that i have lost part of my privacy being constantly under the spotlight.

i may live my life as i used to do trying to change nothing, yet everything changes

around us. i still love sun and sea and children and everything else that makes

me happy since i was a kid. So the big deal for me is to remain the same man i

used to be no matter how people see me. And fortunately, i get so much love

from people in return. Many people think that winning an Olympic medal is a

very important life achievement. for me, what is important is the Olympic ideals,

the olive wreath (kotinos in Greek). People’s love and smiles are priceless and

there is no medal in the world that can buy me that kind of love. Our shared

values and ideals is what leads people in greatest achievements. This is exactly

what i am trying to teach to young people whenever i get the chance to talk to

them. in the end, all that matters is that happy look on their faces, their smile.

To believe in certain values and ideals and fight for them is the most important

achievement in one’s life. i also tell kids that i do not come from any wealthy

background, i did not even have the means to make it. yet, i felt like the richest

man in the world for i had a vision to believe into.

What is the kind of questions children usually ask you? Their most frequently

asked question is how i feel. And actually, this is the main topic of the book that

i am about to publish. My visit to the hilton Athens is kind of symbolic, meaning

that this is a place where the plot of my book evolves. The rest of the plot

revolves around my experience at sea. i refer to certain moments of my life, to

my relationship with other people and to how i chased my dream. i take pride

in saying that i dared to make my dream come true without compromising any

of my values. And then, kids go on and ask me how is this manageable? how is

it possible to succeed without compromising your values? So, i explain to them

that it may be difficult but it can be done. There are also some pretty innocent

Πώς το κάνεις, δίχως να τραυματίσεις τις αξίες σου. Τους εξηγώ ότι αυτό είναι δύ-

σκολο αλλά όχι ακατόρθωτο. Υπάρχουν και τα πολύ αθώα ερωτήματα από τα μι-

κρά παιδάκια όπως για παράδειγμα, «στη θάλασσα έχετε δει καρχαρία;». Υπάρχει

παιδί που μου έχει στείλει γράμμα και μου γράφει πως είχε σταματήσει στη ζωή του

να τολμά το οτιδήποτε από τότε που πέθανε το μικρό του αδελφάκι από καρκίνο.

Στη συνέχεια έγραφε πως θα δοκίμαζε ξανά, μετά την ομιλία μου στα παιδιά στο

σχολείο του. Για μένα λοιπόν είναι πολύ ανώτερο το να πρεσβεύω και να μεταλα-

μπαδεύω την ολυμπιακή ιδέα αλλά και ένα διά βίου ευ αγωνίζεσθαι.

Κάθε φορά που καλείστε να μιλήσετε μπροστά σε κοινό, τι είναι αυτό που παί-

ζει σημαντικό ρόλο στο τι θα πείτε; Είναι κάποιοι παράγοντες, όμως το σημαντι-

κότερο είναι ποιον έχω απέναντί μου. Όπως στην ιστιοπλοΐα η κάθε μέρα είναι δι-

αφορετική, από τη θύελλα στη νηνεμία, έτσι και το κοινό στο οποίο απευθύνομαι,

αλλάζει. Πρέπει να είμαι έτοιμος για τα πάντα. Έτσι λοιπόν και το κοινό μου είναι μία

διαφορετική συνθήκη. Η συνθήκη μού υπαγορεύει πώς θα αντιδράσω. Η θάλασ-

σα με έμαθε να ακούω, να προσαρμόζομαι, αλλά ακόμη και να προλαμβάνω κατα-

στάσεις. Όταν ο ανταγωνισμός κάνει προπόνηση reaction, εγώ κάνω προπόνηση

preaction. Μου θέτουν συνήθως το ερώτημα «ποια είναι η σχέση μου με τον αθλη-

τισμό και τη θάλασσα». Το ενδιαφέρον στοιχείο για μένα είναι το πώς αυτό συνδέ-

εται με το επιχειρηματικό κομμάτι καθώς πολλές ομιλίες μου γίνονται σε πολύ μεγά-

λες εταιρείες. Αυτό είναι και ένα πολύ μεγάλο στοίχημα, το πώς δηλαδή μπορείς να

μεταδώσεις στοιχεία του πρωταθλητισμού στις ομιλίες που απευθύνονται σε κοινό

που αποτελείται από σημαντικά στελέχη.

Πώς θα μου περιγράφατε τη σχέση σας με τη θάλασσα; Είναι μία σχέση σεβα-

σμού και όχι φόβου. Μέσα από τη θάλασσα ισορροπώ την ενέργειά μου. Είναι “the

biggest natural equalizer of energy”. Μπαίνεις μέσα και ζεις το τώρα, παίρνεις ενέρ-

γεια και όχι μόνο. Στη θάλασσα μπορώ να είμαι ένας καλύτερος άνθρωπος και να

ζω το σήμερα και το τώρα. Δίχως αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν κοιτάζω μακριά. Κι αυ-

τό είναι πολύ σημαντικό.

questions usually asked by little kids like for instance when at sea, have you

ever come across to a shark? There was also one kid that once sent me a letter

telling me that they had stopped trying for anything in their life since the death

of their younger brother from cancer. And that he/she was eventually convinced

to start over after my speech at their school. So, for me, there is nothing more

important than to believe in the Olympic ideals and try to pass them on to the

next generations, while also teaching them the value of fair play in life.

What defines your speech whenever found in front of an audience? There

are certain defining factors, but the most important is who i am addressed to.

it’s pretty much like sailing, where not every day is the same; sometimes it’s calm

and other times there is storm in the sea. likewise, the audiences differ from one

another, and i simply have to adopt myself and be prepared for anything. The

circumstances are what defines my reaction. The sea taught me how to listen

and adjust myself and even better how to be proactive. When competitors train

themselves in reaction, i train myself in preaction. i am usually asked what is the

relationship between sports and the sea. The interesting thing for me is how

my experience from sailing can be associated with business, for i often speak

to large business audiences. And this is really challenging, meaning that i have to

share the experience of championship with business executives.

How would you describe your relationship with the sea? My relationship with

the sea is based on respect and certainly not on fear. When at sea, i manage to

balance my energy, as it is indeed the biggest natural equalizer of energy. When

i am at sea, i live for the moment taking so much more than energy. i can be a

better person just for today, while looking ahead with optimism. And this is so

very much important!

νομιλία μαζί του– και άλλαξε την οπτική της τέχνης μιας ολόκληρης χώρας, κα-

τασκευάζοντας το πρώτο μεγάλων διαστάσεων γλυπτό από γυαλί!

Στον κολοφώνα των κακόγουστων γάμων του λαϊκού με την disco και του μπου-

ζουκιού με την ακρυλική βάτα, το δημοτικό δίδυμο Μιλτιάδης Έβερτ και Σταύ-

ρος Ξαρχάκος δραπετεύουν από την πεπατημένη αισθητική και αναθέτουν στον

Κώστα Βαρώτσο την κατασκευή ενός μεγάλων διαστάσεων γλυπτού, που δίχασε

χωρίς προηγούμενο αλλά τελικά εκτιμώ ότι εκπαίδευσε τους πολίτες.

Ένθερμοι υποστηρικτές και μαινόμενοι πολέμιοι μάχονται στη βάση του γλυ-

πτού, που διασώθηκε μεταφερόμενο από την πλατεία Ομονοίας που δέσποζε

στην πλατεία της Μεγάλης του Έθνους Σχολής, απέναντι από το hilton Αθηνών.

Οι διαστάσεις του σε ξεγελούν καθώς οι κτιριακοί όγκοι της Εθνικής Πινακοθή-

κης, του hilton Αθηνών και των ιδιαίτερης αρχιτεκτονικής κτιρίων που το περι-

βάλλουν, δεν επιτρέπουν λόγω κλίμακας να αισθανθείς το δέος που εισπράττεις

από απόσταση αναπνοής. Αφού το χορτάσετε από απόσταση και από κάθε πι-

θανή γωνία, σας συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα να δρασκελίσετε τη χαμηλή περίφρα-

ξη της πλατείας και να βρεθείτε στη βάση του.

Το αιθέριο, αέρινο και φιλικό γλυπτό από κοντά μετατρέπεται σε άγριο, αιχμη-

ρό και επικίνδυνο. Η απελευθερωτική του «κίνηση», που από μακριά σε ξεγε-

λάει ερμηνεύοντάς την ως επιλογή μιας απαλλαγμένης από βάρη φιγούρας που

χαίρεται τη ζωή, από κοντά μοιάζει σαν επιβεβλημένη κίνηση μιας απελπισμένης

φιγούρας που την κυνηγάει η ζωή. Δεν είναι τυχαίο που το πραγματικό όνομα

του γλυπτού είναι «Ξένος».

IN THE 1980S, A yOUNG ARTIST, AGED 32, TOOK THE “RUBBLE” –as

mentioned by a taxi driver who once talked with him– and changed the way

art is perceived by a whole country, simply by creating the first large sculpture

made of glass!

On the crest of kitsch combination of Greek folk and bouzouki with disco music

and vinyl clothing fashion, Miltiadis Evert, then Mayor of Athens, and Stavros

Xarchakos, then Deputy Mayor of Athens, assigned the creation of a large

sculpture to Costas Varotsos, in an effort aiming to escape the mainstream

and rather tasteless lifestyle of the time. Varotsos’ runner (Dromeas in Greek)

caused an unprecedented debate that although it has divided Athenians, yet it

somehow educates them in new forms of artistic creativity.

The sculpture has still passionate advocates and furious opponents, even after its

transfer from Omonoia Square to Meghali tou Ghenous Scholie Square across

the hilton Athens.

runner’s large size is not easily perceived due to the huge dimensions of the

surrounding buildings, such as the national Gallery, the hilton Athens and other

edifices of particular architectural style. looking at it, from a certain distance, it

gives the impression of an aery, flowing man figure running in the street. however,

once you approach it, you get to understand its magnitude, as it turns out to be

a wild and dangerous giant made of sharp glass.

its free “motion”, when looking at it from afar, makes people believe that this is

about the representation of a happy jogger enjoying life. yet a closer look to the

sculpture gives the impression of a rather desperate man chasing life in vain. This

may explain why the real name of the sculpture is “Stranger” (Xenos in Greek).

συμβολή των οδών Καρυάτιδων και Καλλισπέρη, ένα παλιό σπίτι έχει πολλές

ιστορίες να διηγηθεί. Ιστορίες δεμένες με χρυσό και στολισμένες με πολύτιμους

λίθους, παραμύθια κεντημένα στο ασήμι και καλά φυλαγμένα σε κουτιά επεν-

δυμένα με ακριβό βελούδο. Το πατρικό σπίτι του Ηλία Λαλαούνη, γιατί σε αυτό

αναφερόμαστε, είναι κάτι περισσότερο από μια αστική κατοικία που φέρει ακόμα

το άρωμα μιας εποχής με άλλη ποιότητα. Είναι ένα μουσείο, στις αίθουσες του

οποίου φιλοξενείται ο (οικογενειακός) κόπος πολλών δεκαετιών. Ένα μουσείο

ξεχωριστό, που αν για τον ιδρυτή του ήταν (όπως ο ίδιος το αποκάλεσε) «το πέ-

μπτο παιδί μου», για τον επισκέπτη είναι μια θαυμάσια ευκαιρία να γνωρίσει και

να θαυμάσει την τέχνη της αργυροχρυσοχοΐας, αλλά και να κατανοήσει το μέ-

γεθος της προσφοράς της οικογένειας Λαλαούνη σε εθνικό επίπεδο: μιας οικο-

γένειας που κατάφερε μέσα από τη δημιουργία κοσμημάτων υψηλής αισθητικής

και με το εμπόριό τους σε όλο τον κόσμο, να τιμήσει το όνομα της Ελλάδας, να

λειτουργήσει ως πρέσβειρα του πολιτισμού μας σε Ευρώπη, Αμερική και Ασία.

Το Μουσείο Κοσμήματος Ηλία Λαλαούνη, το οποίο, ας σημειωθεί, είναι το μο-

ναδικό αφιερωμένο στο σύγχρονο κόσμημα μουσείο της Ελλάδας, εγκαινιά-

στηκε το 1994 και στεγάζεται στο πατρικό σπίτι του ιδρυτή του. Πρόκειται για

μία κομψή οικεία της δεκαετίας του 1930, η οποία ανακαινίσθηκε από τον Βασί-

λη Γρηγοριάδη πάνω σε σχέδια του Γάλλου αρχιτέκτονα bernard Zehrfuss. Στις

αίθουσές της ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να περιηγηθεί στη δημιουργική πορεία της

οικογένειας Λαλαούνη, μέσα από 4.000 (και περισσότερα) κοσμήματα και μι-

κρογλυπτά. Στον πρώτο όροφο, οι μόνιμες συλλογές έχουν οργανωθεί σε έξι

θεματικές ενότητες, τις «Χρυσή Αυγή της Τέχνης», «Ιστορία του Ελληνικού Κο-

σμήματος», «Συλλογές εμπνευσμένες από Ξένους Πολιτισμούς», «Συλλογές

dence located just below the Acropolis hill, at Caryatidon & Kallisperi Streets.

This place of vivid history embroidered in gold and silver with precious stones

well kept in expensive velvet boxes preserves the atmosphere of the glorious

past. Today, it is about an exceptional museum hosting the (family) labor of

many decades or the “fifth child” of his founder, as he liked to call it, offering a

unique experience to its visitors by giving them the chance to meet with the

marvelous world of goldsmith art and appreciate the vast contribution of la-

laounis family in the cultural progress of Greece. lalaounis are a family dedi-

cated to fine jewelry art and trade all over the world, having built an excellent

reputation also honoring their country by acting as an ambassador of Greek

culture in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

ilias lalaounis Jewelry Museum being the only museum dedicated to mod-

ern jewelry in Greece was established in 1994. This elegant residence, typical

of the architectural style of the 1930s, was designed by the french architect

bernard Zehrfuss and renovated by architect Vassilis Gregoriades. With over

4,000 pieces of jewelry and micro sculptures, the museum narrates the glo-

rious story of the long creative course of lalaounis jewelers. Permanent col-

lections are hosted on the first floor, organized by six sections, “The Golden

Dawn οf Art”, “The history of Ancient Greek Art”, “Jewelry inspired from

Other Civilizations”, “Collections inspired from nature”, “Collections inspired

from Space, biology and Modern Technology” and “Special Commissions and

Private Collections”. The micro sculptures belonging to the permanent col-

lections are exhibited on the second floor, where temporary exhibitions are

also hosted. The museum also hosts the Archive of lalaounis’ Collections, in-

cluding designs, models, photos and digital material concerning lalaounis’ cre-

ations from 1940 to 2000.

του Λαλαούνη, με μακέτες, σχέδια, μοντέλα, φωτογραφικό και ψηφιακό υλικό.

Όλα τα έργα που εκτίθενται φιλοτεχνήθηκαν ανάμεσα στο 1940 και το 2000.

Κοντολογίς, τα πρώτα εκθέματα αφορούν την εποχή (1940) όταν ο Λαλαούνης

ανέλαβε τη θέση του διευθυντή στην κοσμηματοποιία «Ζολώτα» (ο ιδιοκτήτης

της ήταν θείος του). Στη συνέχεια ξεκίνησε να δημιουργεί ο ίδιος, αποκλειστι-

κά, τα σχέδια των κοσμημάτων. Το 1968 δημιούργησε τη δική του επιχείρηση,

που σταδιακά εξαπλώθηκε σε όλο τον κόσμο, με περισσότερα από τριάντα κα-

ταστήματα. Αρχικά εγκαινίασε υποκαταστήματα σε ελληνικά νησιά, ενώ γρήγο-

ρα επεκτάθηκε σε μεγαλουπόλεις όπως το Λονδίνο, το Παρίσι, η Ζυρίχη, η Γε-

νεύη, η Νέα Υόρκη, το Τόκιο και το Χονγκ Κονγκ.

Αντλώντας έμπνευση από τη φύση, από τη μυθολογία και την ιστορία της Ελ-

λάδας αλλά και από την τεχνολογία, ο Ηλίας Λαλαούνης δεν ήταν απλώς ένας

ταλαντούχος δημιουργός (και έμπορος) κοσμημάτων. Ήταν ο άνθρωπος που

πήρε μια τέχνη και την εξέλιξε, την πήγε πιο μπροστά, δημιουργώντας νέες τε-

χνικές και νέα εργαλεία αλλά και αναβιώνοντας αρχαίες ελληνικές τεχνικές. Στο

χέρι του, το κόσμημα αναβαθμίστηκε, έγινε ακριβό έργο τέχνης που όχι μόνο

προορίζεται για να στολίσει την καλοντυμένη γυναίκα αλλά και για να εκτεθεί στις

προθήκες των μουσείων. Για την προσφορά του, ο Ηλίας Λαλαούνης έχει λάβει

πολλά βραβεία. Ύψιστη τιμή στην πολυετή καριέρα του, η αναγόρευσή του ως

μέλους της Γαλλικής Ακαδημίας Καλών Τεχνών –και είναι, αν δεν απατόμαστε,

ο μοναδικός κοσμηματοποιός που εξελέγη ποτέ σε αυτή τη θέση.

Σήμερα, στο εργοστάσιό του, που ιδρύθηκε το 1993, εξακολουθούν να σχεδι-

άζονται και να παράγονται κοσμήματα που ακολούθως διοχετεύονται στα κα-

ταστήματα της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού. Επικεφαλής της επιχείρησης αλλά

και του Μουσείου Λαλαούνη έχουν αναλάβει οι τέσσερις κόρες του Ηλία Λα-

λαούνη, Kατερίνη, Δήμητρα, Μαρία και Ιωάννα.

The Archive is divided into periods starting from 1940, when lalaounis took

over the management of his uncles’ Zolotas house of Jewelry, soon becom-

ing the exclusive designer of their jewelry. in 1968, he started his own business

and gradually expanded via more than thirty branches all over the world. Soon

after the establishment of this first jewelry stores in the Greek islands, he went

on with cosmopolitan cities such as london, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, new york,

Tokyo and hong Kong.

inspired by nature, Greek history and mythology, and even by technology, ilias

lalaounis was more than a talented jewelry designer and tradesman. he was a

true innovator who revived ancient Greek goldsmith art and enriched it by in-

venting new craft techniques and tools. lalaounis took the ordinary jewels and

rendered them to luxury pieces of art intended to adorn fancy ladies and most

importantly museum display cases. Many times awarded for his vast contribu-

tion, he was highly honored as the only jeweler ever elected to be a member

of the french Academy of fine Arts.

Today, ilias lalaounis’ four daughters, Caterina, Demetra, Maria and ioanna, lead

both the museum and the goldsmithery, founded in 1993, in keeping with the

family tradition of jewelry design and trade in Greece and abroad.

Walking down Koumpari Street, cross Vas. Sofias Avenue and you will reach

herodou Attikou Street, the by far most expensive residential area of Athens.

The street is lined with luxurious apartments and mansions, foremost among

them the Presidential Palace, and the Maximus Mansion, the official seat of the

Greek Prime Minister, some of the many architectural masterpieces of Athens

just opposite to the hidden paradise of the national Garden.

Once the private botanic garden of Queen Amalia of Greece, the national

Garden of Athens remains to be an evergreen oasis and the city’s retreat. Pass-

τόριο Βυζαντινό του hilton Αθηνών, δύο 24ωρα πριν την εμφάνιση της Ντια-

μάντα Γκαλάς στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής. Η Ντιαμάντα Γκαλάς κατεβαίνει από το

δωμάτιό της. Το κατάμαυρο ντύσιμό της συμπληρώνει ένα ζευγάρι καστόρι-

νες μπότες, απόλυτα συμβατό με τη γειτονιά που μένει.

ει να πιει μόνο νερό.

Αισθάνεστε περισσότερο Ελληνίδα ή Αμερικάνα; «Όλοι με ρωτάνε το ίδιο»

με βάζει στη θέση μου. «Αισθάνομαι περισσότερο Μεξικάνα». «Σίγουρα

όμως δεν αισθάνομαι Ευρωπαία, γιατί δεν είμαι» λέει θυμωμένα. «Αλήθεια; Η

Ελλάδα είναι το κέντρο του κόσμου; Τώρα το ανακαλύψατε; Η Ελλάδα έχει

επιδράσει στην Ανατολή, τη Δύση, παντού. Πριν έρθω εδώ, εμφανίστηκα στο

radio house του Βερολίνου, το οποίο έμοιαζε με τον Παρθενώνα. Κοιτούσα

γύρω μου και πονούσα. Είμαι Ελληνίδα της διασποράς και καταλαβαίνω πώς

είναι να λείπουν κομμάτια σου. Να είσαι κάπου ενώ το κέντρο σου βρίσκεται

αλλού. Τραγούδησα το “Άνοιξε Πέτρα” και ούρλιαζαν από κάτω. Στο Βερο-

λίνο, έτσι; Βέβαια, το Βερολίνο είναι μια άλλη πόλη. Διαφέρει από την υπόλοι-

πη Γερμανία. Έζησα, παλιότερα, δύο χρόνια στο Βερολίνο και δούλεψα στο

στούντιο ηχογραφήσεων hansa, με τον baby boy, τον iggy Pop, τον μουσικό

παραγωγό Gareth Jones. Από την άλλη, δεν μπορώ να μιλήσω για ολόκληρη

τη Γερμανία, για ένα λαό. Κρίνω τον κάθε άνθρωπο ξεχωριστά.

Η Ντιαμάντα, όταν κατέβηκε από το δωμάτιό της, κρατούσε μια αγκαλιά χαρτιά,

τα οποία τώρα έχει απλώσει μπροστά της, πάνω στο τραπέζι που μας χωρίζει.

Μέσα από αυτά διαλέγει ένα σκίτσο με μαύρο στυλό, «έχω σκιτσάρει το μακι-

γιάζ της παράστασης για να το δείξω στη make up artist» λέει. Έντονα μάτια και

αυστηρά ζυγωματικά. Δίπλα στο σκίτσο σημειώσεις στα ελληνικά. «Γράφω κα-

λύτερα ελληνικά απ’ ό,τι μιλάω».

Γράφετε καλλιγραφικά, καταπληκτικός γραφικός χαρακτήρας. Α, σε ευχαρι-

στώ. Ο πατέρας μου ήταν δάσκαλος και μουσικός.

DRESSED IN TOTAL BLACK AND SUEDE BOOTS, Diamanda Galas arrived

at the byzantino restaurant of the hilton Athens, on a rainy afternoon, just a

couple of days before her gig at the Athens Concert hall “Megaron”.

“i live in baja, California” said Diamanda and immediately switched to Spanish.

“i care, i really do. i care for what is going on with narcos (drug traffickers) mur-

dering women in Mexico just to sell their body parts. i care when i hear that

women are abused and oppressed. Greece and Mexico have many things in

common, when it comes to culture. for instance, the notion of sacrifice ob-

tains in both cultures. There you see, you too look like a Mexican”, said by turn-

ing to Stathis, the guy from the music public relations agency. And he really did

admitting it himself.

so, my question on how is her Greek slipped easily to the next subject as

expected. “it is getting better every day but i am never here long enough to

practice”, replied Diamanda in fluent Greek. “Well, what can i say? it’s always

like this,” added while ordering only water.

Giving a snappy answer to my silly question on whether she feels more like

a Greek or an american, she replied by saying: “Why on earth you people

keep asking me this all the time? Once and for all, i feel more like a Mexican”.

“Well, i certainly do not feel like a European, simply because i am not one”, went

on Diamanda in the same mood. “i mean really? Do you think Greece as the

center of the world? So you finally noticed, how come? People are influenced

by Greece from East to West, all over the world. before coming to Greece,

i did a gig at the radio house in berlin, a venue resembling to Parthenon. My

heart sank as i looked around. As someone who belongs to the Greek diaspora,

i do understand what it feels like to miss certain parts of yourself or to always

feel like you are far from the centre of your universe. Ι sang the popular Greek

song “Anoixe Petra” (by M. Plessas) and fans screamed for more. And that was

berlin, right? Well, of course berlin is not a typical German city. i happened to

spend a couple of years in berlin, many years ago, working for the hansa re-

cording Studio, with artists like baby boy, iggy Pop, and music producer Gareth

Jones. however, i can speak neither for all Germans nor for their country as a

whole. i can only judge by personality.

When Diamanda left her room, she was holding a pile of papers that were later

on spread out on our table. She picked one and showed me a sketch in black

pencil, “i have sketched the make up for my show and i want to show it to the

makeup artist” she said, and i see the drawing of a face with intense eyes and

rigid cheekbones along with notes written in Greek. “i write better than i speak

in Greek” explained Diamanda.

you write in calligraphic script! What a nice handwriting! Oh, thank you! My

dad was a teacher and a musician.

θυμόσαστε κάτι από τα gigs που κάνατε μαζί με τον πατέρα σας, στο Σαν

Ντιέγκο; Ναι, ο πατέρας μου πάντα μου έλεγε, «δεν χρειάζεται να διαβάζεις

μουσική, αρκεί μόνο να την ακούς, να την αισθάνεσαι και μετά θα μπορέσεις να

την τραγουδήσεις. Αρκεί να αισθάνεσαι».

Διαχωρίζει τη θέση της από τους pop καλλιτέχνες. «Μιλάω έτσι γιατί, όπως αι-

σθάνομαι, δεν είμαι pop artist, αλλά ακόμα κι αν ήμουν, πάλι έτσι θα μίλαγα». Παι-

δί Ελλήνων με καταγωγή από τη Μάνη, μεγάλωσε ακούγοντας ελληνική, τουρ-

κική και αραβική μουσική, αλλά σε καμία περίπτωση beatles ή pop της δεκαετί-

ας του ’60. Η free jazz είναι η μεγάλη της αδυναμία, έχοντας ερμηνεύσει συνθέ-

τες όπως ο Xenakis και έχοντας παίξει με μουσικούς όπως ο John Zorn και ο

Peter Kowald. «Όταν τραγουδάω jazz ή μπλουζ, επιλέγω να προσθέσω κάτι από

βυζαντινή μουσική. Είναι το δικό μου στυλ, η δική μου δυναμική στη μουσική».

Η Ντιαμάντα Γκαλάς είναι απεριόριστη. Δεν τη χωράει καμία ταμπέλα. Ειδικά η

ταμπέλα του avant-garde που τη συνοδεύει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Τη ρωτάω πώς

αισθάνεται με αυτό. «Δεν καταλαβαίνουν τι κάνω ακριβώς» μου απαντάει σε κο-

φτά ελληνικά και μετά το γυρίζει πάλι στα αγγλικά. «Στη μόδα το avant-garde εί-

ναι μια χαρά διαφοροποίηση, αλλά στη μουσική, όχι. Είναι λίγο. Είναι ένα ακόμα

brand. Δεν ένιωσα ποτέ ότι ταυτίστηκα με αυτό. Αλλάζω συνέχεια τη μουσική

μου, μεταβάλλομαι μέσα από αυτήν. Διαβάζω συχνά σε κριτικές “η Ντιαμάντα

δεν συνεχίζει αυτό που έκανε πριν. Τώρα κάνει αυτό ή το άλλο”. Αλήθεια; Τι μου

λες; Το κάνω, όντως; Πες μου τι κάνω γιατί μάλλον εσύ ξέρεις καλύτερα από μέ-

να. Βάλε μια ταμπέλα, σε παρακαλώ. To avant-garde δεν σημαίνει τίποτα για μέ-

Διάβασα ότι σας αρέσει ο Καζαντζάκης. Ναι, το «Συμπόσιον», το αγαπώ. Το

ξεχωρίζω αυτό το βιβλίο του. Λέει ο πατέρας στον γιο του, κάποια στιγμή, «εσύ

είσαι ο θεός, μην περιμένεις τον Θεό. Εσύ μόνο μπορείς να κάνεις αυτό που

θέλεις». Αν διαβάσεις μόνο ένα βιβλίο στη ζωή σου, δεν θα μπορέσεις ποτέ να

διαμορφώσεις τη δική σου άποψη, πάντα θα αναπαράγεις την ιδέα του βιβλί-

ου που διάβασες. Εάν όμως διαβάσεις ένα εκατομμύριο βιβλία, τότε θα έχεις

άποψη. Δική σου. Αυτή είναι η γνώμη μου και αν κάνω λάθος, θα πω συγγνώμη.

Η Ντιαμάντα Γκαλάς κυκλοφόρησε φέτος δύο καινούργια άλμπουμ, το

«All the Way» και το «At Saint Thomas the Apostle harlem».

do you remember anything from the gigs you did together with your dad

in san diego? yes. My dad always told me that “you don’t need to read mu-

sic, you just have to listen to it and feel it and then you will be able to sing. All

it takes is feeling”.

She distanced herself from pop artists: “i speak like this because, the way i feel

it, i am not a pop artist and even if i were, i would still talk as i do”. being the

daughter of Greek emigrants with Manie, Peloponnese origin, Diamanda grew

up listening to Greek, Turkish and Arab music, instead of beatles or 1960s’ pop

music. She is a huge fan of free jazz having interpreted Xenakis amongst oth-

ers and played with famous soloists like John Zorn and Peter Kowald. “When

i sing the jazz or blues, i like to add some byzantine music in my singing. This is

my own style, my own dynamics in music”.

Diamanda Galas knows no boundaries, recognizing no label, especially that of

the avant-garde artist accompanying her all these years. i asked her how she

feels about that, “They simply do not understand what it exactly that i do is”,

replied Diamanda in fluent Greek and then switched again to English: “in fash-

ion terms, avant-garde sounds just fine. it is just like another brand. but in mu-

sic, it cannot be like this. i never felt this avant-garde thing. Music is much more

than words could say. i keep changing myself by constantly changing my music.

i often read reviews about me saying that i am not keeping up with what i pre-

viously did and staff like this. yeah right! i mean com’ on! What are you saying

to me? is this what i do? Ok, then! you tell me what i do for you seem to know

better than me. Put a label on me, please! Avant-garde means absolutely noth-

ing to me. i just sing what i hear. And what i hear is what i learned from all these

years that i keep studying music, that is many different kinds of music, from bach

to Aggelopoulos (Greek popular singer of romani origin) and from Edith Piaff

to Anna Vissi (Greek pop singer of Greek-Cypriot origin)”.

I read somewhere that you like nikos Kazantzakis. Is that right? yes, i love

“Symposium”; it is my favorite book of his. Somewhere in the book, a father says

to his son “Do not expect anything from God; you are god yourself. you and

only you can do what you want to do”. if you read just one book in your entire

life, you will never be able to draw an opinion of your own. instead, you will al-

ways reproduce the idea of the book that you read. however, if you read –let’s

say– a million books, then you will get to have an opinion of your own. This is

how i think of it and if i am wrong, i apologize.

This year, Diamanda Galas has released two new albums: “All the

Way” and “At Saint Thomas the Apostle harlem”.

μότο που κοσμεί τον τοίχο του KK’s lab και αμέσως ο νους συνδυάζει το μύρω-

μα με μία πράξη φροντίδας και αγάπης. Ο Νίκος Κάππας και η Αναστασία Κα-

μαριανού, ζευγάρι στη ζωή και γονείς ενός μικρού αγοριού, αποκαλούν το αρω-

ματοπωλείο τους ως το πρώτο τους παιδί. «Η επιλογή του μότο ήταν έμπνευση

της Αναστασίας», τονίζει ο Νίκος Κάππας, «γιατί αν δεν είσαι καλός με τον εαυ-

τό σου, πώς θα είναι οι γύρω σου με σένα;» συμπληρώνει, αφού θεωρεί τόσο ο

ίδιος όσο και η σύζυγός του ότι το άρωμα είναι μία πράξη ευγένειας προς τον

εαυτό μας. Στο ιδιαίτερο αυτό αρωματοπωλείο, με τα ξύλινα ράφια που κρατούν

επάνω τους μπουκάλια με πάνω από 200 εσάνς επώνυμων αρωμάτων, το μαγικό

είναι ότι ο καθένας μπορεί να δημιουργήσει το δικό του, custom made άρωμα,

με βάση τις νότες που αγαπά. «Φέτος, στραφήκαμε στη δημιουργία της εξειδι-

κευμένης σειράς Pure Arabian και μίας συλλογής αρωμάτων με έμφαση στις φυ-

σικές νότες –πιπέρι, θαλασσινό αλάτι, πούδρα, άνθη νεραντζιάς, σύκο, βετιβέρ,

βαμβάκι–, τα οποία φοριούνται ατόφια ή αναμειγνύονται μεταξύ τους, επιτυγχά-

νοντας την ιδανική, για την όσφρηση του καθενός, μυρωδιά. Η διαδικασία δημι-

ουργίας ενός προσωπικού αρώματος γίνεται μπροστά στα μάτια του ενδιαφε-

ρόμενου και θυμίζει ιεροτελεστία. «Κλείνουμε ένα προσωπικό ραντεβού με τον

rectly connecting perfume wearing with an act of love and care. nikos Kappas

and his life partner Anastasia Kamarianou already have a son, yet they think of

their perfume shop as being their elder child. “The slogan belongs to Anastasia”

underlined nikos Kappas while adding that “if you are not kind to yourselves,

how would you expect others to be kind to you?” in line with his wife consid-

ering perfume as a courtesy to ourselves. Their perfume shop has a unique at-

mosphere created by wooden shelves with more than 200 different scents of

famous perfume brands that can be used as the basis for the creation of cus-

tom made perfumes. “This year, we created a special Pure Arabian line and a

collection of fragrances inspired by natural products such as pepper, sea salt,

powder, bitter orange blossoms, fig, vetiver and cotton, that may either be used

separately or as a mixture in order to achieve the ideal fragrance matching the

preference of our clients. Custom made fragrances are created in the presence

of our clients who witness a true ritual. for this, we arrange an appointment

with our customer in order to know better their personal preferences, the per-

fumes they used to wear in the past, the scents that remind them of pleasant

moments in their lives and then start mixing our ingredients” explains Anasta-

ίναί ενα ξεχώρίσΤο πΛασμα� Δεν θυμίζει τις

υπόλοιπες παρουσιάστριες, γιατί πολύ απλά έχει επιλέξει να είναι ο εαυτός της

και να μη φοβάται να το δείξει στον κόσμο. Κι ο κόσμος, με τη σειρά του, την

ανταμείβει με υψηλή τηλεθέαση αλλά και με συναισθήματα αγάπης και εκτίμη-

σης. Η Μαρία Μπεκατώρου βρέθηκε ένα καλοκαιρινό πρωινό στην πισίνα του

hilton Αθηνών και άνοιξε την καρδιά της σε ό,τι αφορά στο τηλεοπτικό μέλλον

της και στις μικρές απολαύσεις της ζωής της.

Τι πρέπει να διαθέτει κάποιος ο οποίος αποφασίζει να ασχοληθεί με την

τηλεοπτική ψυχαγωγία και μάλιστα από τη θέση της παρουσιάστριας; Αλή-

θεια και αισιοδοξία, με την έννοια της αληθινής χαράς. Επίσης θα πρέπει να έχει

χιούμορ, να αυτοσαρκάζεται με μέτρο.

Εσείς είστε ευχαριστημένη από τη μέχρι τώρα πορεία σας στην ελληνική

τηλεόραση; Ναι, είμαι. Διότι είμαι ευχαριστημένη γενικότερα από το πώς μου

τα έφερε η ζωή. Βέβαια, από όταν ξεκίνησα να παρουσιάζω εκπομπές όπως το

«Junior Master Chef» στο Μega και στη συνέχεια τις εκπομπές που ανέλαβα

στον ΑΝΤ1, νιώθω πως έχω βελτιώσει αρκετά πράγματα σε σχέση με τον τρό-

πο που κάνω τη δουλειά μου.

Παρακολουθείτε τον εαυτό σας για να δείτε τι κάνετε λάθος και τι σας αρέ-

σει περισσότερο; Όχι πάντα, γιατί με πιέζει να με βλέπω. Αλλά κάθε φορά που

νιώθω ότι έκανα κάτι λάθος, το παρακολουθώ για να δω αν, κατά την κρίση μου,

το χειρίστηκα σωστά ή ήμουν υπερβολική.

Πόσο απέχει η Μαρία της τηλεόρασης από τη Μαρία της καθημερινότητας;

Νομίζω ότι δεν υπάρχει απόσταση.

Είναι κι αυτό ένα μυστικό επιτυχίας; Ο κόσμος εκτιμά το ότι είστε ο εαυτός

σας; Νομίζω πλέον, και ειδικά την περίοδο της οικονομικής και κοινωνικής κρί-

σης που διανύουμε, ότι ο κόσμος αντιλαμβάνεται την αλήθεια και αυτό που θέ-

λει είναι το αυθεντικό. Πιστεύω ότι είναι πολλά τα στοιχεία που ταιριάζουν με τη

σημερινή πραγματικότητα.

What does it take for someone to be involved with tV entertainment and

especially to become a tV presenter? honesty and optimism expressed in a

joyful way. humor is also a must and being sarcastic with oneself is useful when

not exaggerated.

are you satisfied with you career in the Greek tV so far? yes i am. but, you know,

i am anyway satisfied with my life overall. Of course, i feel that i have improved my

skills and i am a lot better in my job, since i started presenting shows like the “Junior

Master Chef” on Mega Channel and then the live programs on AnT1 TV.

do you watch your shows to see whether you do something wrong or good

to build on it? no, not always; it makes me nervous. but when i feel that i did

something wrong, i will watch it to see it for myself and realize whether i managed

to deliver or i exaggerated.

How different is Maria viewers get to know from Maria in her everyday life?

not different at all, i dare say.

so, is this your secret for success? do people really appreciate you being

yourself? Eventually yes; and especially nowadays, with all this recession stuff

and social crisis that we go through, people realize the truth and they only seek

for whatever is original. i think there is so much matching with today’s reality.

How do your summers taste? They definitely taste like ice cream! i love summer

so much, i really do. To be honest, i have so many memories, especially of

Τι γεύση έχουν τα καλοκαίρια της ζωής σας; Παγωτό! Τα καλοκαίρια μου τα

αγαπάω πάρα πολύ, τα λατρεύω. Για να είμαι απόλυτα ειλικρινής, έχοντας ανα-

μνήσεις και χάνοντας κάποιους ανθρώπους από τη ζωή μου, κάτι μέσα μου έχει

αλλάξει στον τρόπο που τα αντιμετωπίζω. Δεν έχω την ίδια ανεμελιά που είχα

παλιότερα. Σκέφτομαι δηλαδή τα καλοκαίρια που πηγαίναμε στην Κεφαλονιά

με τον μπαμπά, τη μαμά, τη γιαγιά και τη γειτονιά… Παίζαμε, τσακωνόμαστε, πέ-

φταμε, χτυπούσαμε… Τώρα η γειτονιά δεν είναι ίδια. Αλλά περνάμε ωραία με

τον σύζυγό μου, τον Αντώνη, πηγαίνουμε σε πολλά και διαφορετικά μέρη και

απολαμβάνουμε τη θάλασσα, τους φίλους μας και την καλοκαιρινή ανεμελιά.

Το καλοκαίρι στην Αθήνα είναι ωραίο; Και βέβαια! Έχω μείνει δύο καλοκαίρια

στην Αθήνα και πέρασα υπέροχα. Μου αρέσει η βόλτα στα Νότια, το παγωτό

στη Βουλιαγμένη, το μπάνιο στα βράχια της Βραυρώνας, οι ωραίοι κήποι και τα

θερινά σινεμά. Φυσικά πιο συχνά πηγαίνω να κάνω το μπάνιο μου στην πισίνα

του hilton Αθηνών, είναι υπέροχα με τις φίλες μου. Χαλαρώνω και πίνω τον κα-

φέ μου. Αν και είσαι στο κέντρο της πόλης, νιώθεις πως δεν είσαι. Νομίζεις ότι

ταξίδεψες και βρέθηκες αλλού. Μου αρέσει να πίνω και το κοκτέιλ μου και να

απολαμβάνω τη θέα της πισίνας.

Είστε αισιόδοξη για το μέλλον; Στην τηλεόραση βιώνουμε μία μεταβατική πε-

ρίοδο. Θα ήθελα να γίνουν ωραία ψυχαγωγικά προγράμματα, με ανθρώπους

που αγαπούν και ξέρουν καλά αυτόν τον τομέα.

Πού θα είστε φέτος το καλοκαίρι; Θα είμαι αρχικά στη Σύρο, με πολυαγα-

πημένους φίλους και στη συνέχεια θα επισκεφτώ την Κεφαλονιά, το νησί μου.

people that are not with us anymore, and this has somehow affected the way

i see it now. i am not that blissful and frivolous sort that i used to be. Meaning

that, when i recall the summers i spent with my parents and my grandma in our

neighborhood in Cephalonia island... well, it’s not the same anymore. i remember

being happy playing, yelling, laughing or crying with the other kids, but these days

are now gone for good. but then again, i am still all right hanging around with my

husband, Antonis, and our friends, visiting so many different places and enjoying

the sea and the summer fun.

What about summer in athens? ιs it any nice at all? Of course it is! i spent

summer twice in Athens and i had a wonderful time. i so much like southern

Athens, walking by the sea, eating my ice cream in Vouliagmeni, swimming at the

rocky beach of Vavrona or hanging out in beautiful gardens and watching films at

the open air cinemas. Well, most of the time, i take a swim at the pool of hilton

Athens hotel, as it is the ideal meeting point with my friends for a relaxing cup of

coffee. it feels like a real getaway from the noisy city, while being in the heart of

it. Pretty amazing, isn’t it? i also love to have my cocktail at the Oasis Pool bar %

Grill enjoying the pool view.

are you optimist for the future? in TV we go through a transition. i long for nice

entertainment programs by people who know how to do them and love TV.

Where are you going for the summer? We will be visiting Syros island along

with our friends and then go to my home island, Cephalonia.

ίναί Το μαρμαρο που κρυβεί στα σπλάχνα της, βα-

ρύ και ασήκωτο, εκείνο που την κρατά σταθερή στη θέση της. Αλλιώς, ο αέρας που

συνήθως κατεβαίνει με δύναμη από το ψηλότερο βουνό της, τον Τσικνιά (κατοικία

του Αιόλου σύμφωνα με μία παράδοση), θα μπορούσε να την ξεκολλήσει και να την

παρασύρει σε κάποια άλλη γωνιά του Αιγαίου. Φτιαγμένη από πράσινο μάρμαρο και

από άνεμο, η Τήνος, «αγκυροβολημένη» ανάμεσα στην Άνδρο και τη Μύκονο, και

έχοντας απέναντί της, σε απόσταση αναπνοής, τη Σύρο, προσφέρεται στον επισκέ-

πτη ως μια ακόμα θαυμαστή ψηφίδα του Αιγαίου, ιδανική για εξερεύνηση. Γιατί μπο-

ρεί να έγινε περισσότερο γνωστή ως το νησί της Μεγαλόχαρης, αλλά στην πραγ-

ματικότητα έχει περισσότερα να προσφέρει από την κατάνυξη που «επιβάλλει» μια

θαυματουργή εικόνα. Εδώ το θαύμα υπερβαίνει τη θρησκεία, είναι ένα θαύμα που

έφτιαξαν οι κάτοικοί της με τα ίδια τους τα χέρια («χειροποίητο νησί» την είχε απο-

καλέσει ο Κορνήλιος Καστοριάδης), μέσα στο πέρασμα των αιώνων, μεταμορφώ-

νοντας αυτό τον τόπο τον μικρό σε κάτι σημαντικό και μεγάλο.

Γιατί η Τήνος είναι η πατρίδα της μαρμαροτεχνίας (που περιλαμβάνεται πλέον στον

Κατάλογο της Άυλης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της unESCO). Είναι το μέρος που

γέννησε τον Χαλεπά, τον Γύζη, τον Λύτρα και τον Φιλιππότη, για να αναφερθούμε

σε μερικούς μόνο από τους σημαντικούς καλλιτέχνες που χάρισε στην Ελλάδα. Εί-

ναι ένας τόπος όπου η Ιστορία και η παράδοση διηγούνται ιστορίες σε κάθε γωνιά,

και στα πιο μικρά χωριά: με τα υπέρθυρα-έργα τέχνης, με τους βενετσιάνικους θυ-

ρεούς, με τους περιστεριώνες που όμοιοί τους και τόσο πολλοί (περισσότεροι από

600!) δεν υπάρχουν σε κανένα άλλο νησί, με το Ιερό του Ποσειδώνα και της Αμφι-

τρίτης και το κάστρο Εξωμβούργου, με τη Σχολή των Ουρσουλίνων και το Μου-

σείο-μοναστήρι των Ιησουϊτών, με το βραχώδες τοπίο του Βωλάξ (ή Βώλακα), με την

άγρια, ανεμοδαρμένη «Έξω Μεριά», με τα εύφορα περιβόλια των Καθολικών, με,

BUILT ON SOLID MARBLE ROCK RESISTING the strong wind gusts flowing

down Tsiknias, its highest mountain –legend has it that it was once inhabited

ΜιΑ ΠΑρΕξΗΓΗΜΕΝΗ ΧωρΑ

Η πρωτεύουσα του νησιού, η Χώρα, είναι το «φράγμα» που όλα αυτά τα χρόνια

«εμπόδιζε» τους επισκέπτες να γνωρίσουν τα δεκάδες χωριά και χωριουδάκια του.

Ο Ναός της Μεγαλόχαρης, που δεσπόζει σε ένα από τα ψηλότερα σημεία της,

αποτέλεσε (και εξακολουθεί να αποτελεί) προορισμό χιλιάδων προσκυνητών κά-

θε χρόνο. Η τουριστική ανάπτυξη που έφερε ο θρησκευτικός τουρισμός δεν ήταν

ΠυρΓΟΣ ΑΠΟ ΜΑρΜΑρΟ

Το πιο εντυπωσιακό και ωραιότερο χωριό της Τήνου (από τα 40 και βάλε…) και ένα

από τα ωραιότερα χωριά της Ελλάδας, ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα του Γιαννούλη Χαλεπά και

μαρμάρινα τα τέμπλα των εκκλησιών, οι κάσες στις πόρτες και στα παράθυρα των

σπιτιών, τα υπέρθυρα. Ακόμα και η στάση του λεωφορείου είναι όλη σκαλισμένη

pyrGHos VIllaGe, HoMe to MarBle

The most impressive out of more than forty villages in the island of Tinos is

also one of the most beautiful villages all over Greece. Pyrghos is the birth-

place of yannoulis Chalepas and nikiforos lytras, located 30km to the north

from Chora, at Exo Meria, the rocky outer side of Tinos. it is about a total

white settlement built in the natural cavities of rocks in order to hide from pi-

rates and invaders. Pyrghos looks more like an open air monument of folk art

and traditional architecture, where marble has been more than generously

used almost everywhere: Marble-paved streets, marble fountains, marble al-

tarpieces in churches, and marble door and window frames and lintels. Even

the bus stop is engraved in marble! The perennial plane tree in the middle of

the central square surrounded by picturesque coffee shops form an amazing

movie set. Once in Pyrghos, do not forget to visit the house of Chalepas, the

Museum of Tinian Artists and the Piraeus bank Cultural foundation, Museum

of Marble Crafts. The old cemetery of the village is a true open air sculpture

museum. if you want to go for swimming or if you like fresh fish and seafood,

prefer the rochari, Aghia Thalassa or Cavaroulco beaches in Panormos, the

Pyrghos’ haven. Close to Pyrghos, Marla, Mamados, Venardados and Platia vil-

lages are also worth visiting.

cladic architectural style of total white small houses climbing up the hill, built

one next to the other with shared terraces and narrow paths among them.

Dazzling white marble is the predominant building material in these settlements

too. A sandy beach adorns isternia bay. This is where “Thalassaki”, the most fa-

mous restaurant of Tinos, is located. Just below Cardiani, there are other two

wonderful sandy beaches, Calyvia and yannakis, with crystal clear waters that

are so typical of Greece.

VulaCus’ lunar landsCape

The most surprising attraction of Tinos is a plateau hidden far from the sea, in

the heart of the mountainous area of the island. This is Volakas or Vulacus (in

latin), a unique lunar landscape, full of huge and mainly round rocks and moon

(granite) stones that scientists have not yet decided whether this unique place

derived from a fallen meteorite, a volcanic eruption or granite erosion, with

the latter being the most prevailing theory up to now. Volakas village stands

right on the top of these rocks. This beautiful settlement is inhabited by tradi-

tional wicker basketware makers using round reed and osiers in an old craft

way passing down from one generation to the other.

and tHe lIst Goes on WItH More VIllaGes and BeaCHes…

The Kechrovouni Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Aghia Pelaghia,

named after the nun who used to live there, since the day that the famous

artwork of Virgin Mary (Panaghia Evangelistria) appeared to her in a vision in-

dicating the location to be found, forms a whole village with white houses and

colorful gardens. leaving Kechrovouni behind, visitors reach Arnados and Tri-

antaros, two villages with panoramic sea view. Tripotamos village is another

hidden treasure almost next to Chora. if found in Kticado, have a lunch either

at “Drosia” or “Agnanti” tavern. And if in falatado, try “lefkes” tavern. Xinara

and Crocos are two small settlements definitely worth seeing. When found

in loutra, do not miss a guided tour in the ursuline Monastery and the Jesuit

Museum; it would wonderfully take you back in time! Then, there is Campus,

where the Costas Tsoklis’ Museum is located always hosting interesting exhi-

bitions. This year, the main exhibition’s title is “The sea as i recall it…” A few

kilometers away from Tarampado, have a stop in the Dovecote Valley. fol-

lowing the central road passing through dark tunnels, under the houses, you

will meet Smardakitto, Aetofolia, Callonie, Comie and Aghapi, in a row. These

are small traditional settlements of high architectural interest. On the moun-

tainous Sclavochori village, you will get to see the house where painter nicolas

Gysis was born. To take a swim, try Colybithres, the sandy beach with crystal

clear waters; it is ideal provided that no north wind blows. Another option is

the Pachia Ammos beach. in Greek, pachia ammos means thick sand; so you

will know you are there, when you see it! Again provided that no wind from

north blows, the pebble beach of leivadha is worth driving through the long

dirt road leading there. in case of a north wind day, there are alternative op-

tions of well protected beaches on the west side of the island facing Syros. fi-

nally, if you want to take a swim close to Chora, visit Kionia, Aghios romanos,

Aghios fokas or Aghios Sostis.

ροτεχνίας (του Πολιτιστικού Ιδρύματος του Ομίλου Πειραιώς). Το παμπάλαιο νε-

κροταφείο του χωριού είναι μία εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα γλυπτοθήκη. Στο επίνειο

του Πύργου, τον Πάνορμο, οι παραλίες Ρόχαρη, Αγία Θάλασσα και Καβαλουρκό

είναι ιδανικές για μπάνιο. Εδώ θα φάτε φρέσκο ψάρι. Γύρω από τον Πύργο, τα χω-

ριά Μαρλά, Μαμάδος, Βεναρδάδος και Πλατιά έχουν πολλές κρυμμένες ομορφιές.

ΚΑρΔιΑΝΗ ΚΑι υΣΤΕρΝιΑ: ΤΑ ΜΠΑΛΚΟΝιΑ ΤΟυ ΑιΓΑιΟυ

Πολύ κοντά στον Πύργο, η Καρδιανή και τα Υστέρνια διαθέτουν κάτι που δεν έχει

το αρχοντικό κεφαλοχώρι: ανεμπόδιστη θέα στο απέραντο γαλάζιο. Είναι όμως την

ίδια στιγμή και τα δύο χωριά οικισμοί που εκτός από τη θέα έχουν ενδιαφέρον για τα

παλιά σπίτια τους, κολλημένα ή ακόμα καλύτερα σκαρφαλωμένα το ένα πάνω στο

άλλο, και για τις γραφικές γειτονιές τους. Και εδώ κυριαρχεί το εκτυφλωτικό άσπρο.

Και εδώ το μάρμαρο έρχεται να δώσει επιπλέον λάμψη. Στον Όρμο Υστερνίων

εκτός από μια θαυμάσια αμμουδιά θα βρείτε το πιο διάσημο εστιατόριο της Τήνου,

το «Θαλασσάκι». Κάτω από την Καρδιανή, οι παραλίες Καλύβια και Γιαννάκης, δίπλα

η μία στην άλλη, είναι απλώς θαυμάσιες. Άμμος, διάφανα νερά και αυτή η κρυστάλ-

λινη αίσθηση που μόνο οι ελληνικές θάλασσες σου χαρίζουν.

ΣΕΛΗΝιΑΚΟ ΒωΛΑξ

Στο κέντρο της Τήνου, μακριά από τη θάλασσα, κρύβεται μία από τις μεγαλύτερες

εκπλήξεις του νησιού. Ένα τοπίο μοναδικό σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Πρόκειται για ένα

οροπέδιο γεμάτο τεράστιους, κυρίως στρόγγυλους αλλά και σε άλλα σχήματα βρά-

χους (γρανιτένιους ογκόλιθους), ανάμεσα και πάνω (!) στους οποίους έχει χτιστεί

ένα κουκλίστικο χωριό, το Βωλάξ. Πολλές οι θεωρίες για το πότε και πώς δημιουρ-

γήθηκε το σεληνιακό τοπίο: πτώση μετεωρίτη, ηφαιστειακή έκρηξη, σφαιρική απο-

σάρθρωση γρανίτη (η επικρατέστερη)… Οι κάτοικοι του Βωλάξ πουλάνε καλάθια

σε διάφορα μεγέθη, τα οποία φτιάχνουν με καλάμια και λυγαριές, συνεχίζοντας μια

τέχνη πολλών χρόνων που πέρασε από πατέρα σε γιο.

ΟΛΑ ΑυΤΑ ΤΑ ΧωριΑ –ΚΑι Οι ΠΑρΑΛιΕΣ!

Η Μονή Κεχροβουνίου –γνωστή και ως Μοναστήρι της Αγίας Πελαγίας καθώς εκεί

ζούσε η μοναχή που έπειτα από όραμα υπέδειξε πού βρισκόταν η περίφημη εικόνα

του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου– είναι από μόνη της ολόκληρο χωριό, με τα λευκά

σπιτάκια του και τα λουλουδιασμένα στενά του. Σε κοντινή απόσταση τα Δύο Χω-

ριά, ο Αρνάδος και ο Τριαντάρος, χαρίζουν ανεμπόδιστη θέα στο Αιγαίο. Από τα

πιο ενδιαφέροντα και όμορφα χωριά της Τήνου είναι ο (κρυμμένος) Τριπόταμος,

πολύ κοντά στη Χώρα. Στον Κτικάδο, η «Δροσιά» και το «Αγνάντι» σερβίρουν νό-

στιμο φαγητό. Στον Φαλατάδο λειτουργεί το εστιατόριο «Λεύκες». Εξαιρετικά γρα-

φικοί οικισμοί είναι η Ξινάρα και ο Κρόκος, ενώ στα Λουτρά μια ξενάγηση στη Μο-

νή των Ουρσουλίνων και στο Μουσείο των Ιησουϊτών μάς ταξιδεύει σε άλλες δεκα-

ετίες. Ο χρόνος μοιάζει να έχει παγώσει μέσα στις αίθουσές τους. Στον Κάμπο, το

Μουσείο του Κώστα Τσόκλη παρουσιάζει πάντα ενδιαφέρουσες εκθέσεις –η φετινή

θέμα «Η θάλασσα όπως τη θυμάμαι». Λίγο έξω από τον Ταραμπάδο, στην Κοιλά-

δα με τους Περιστεριώνες, βρίσκονται μαζεμένοι μερικοί από τους πιο όμορφους

περιστεριώνες του νησιού. Σμαρδάκιτο, Αετοφωλιά, Καλλονή, Κώμη και Αγάπη (με

τον καταπληκτικό κεντρικό δρόμο να περνά μέσα από σκοτεινές στοές, κάτω από

τα σπίτια), είναι μερικοί ακόμα οικισμοί με μεγάλο αρχιτεκτονικό ενδιαφέρον. Στο

ορεινό Σκλαβοχωριό βρίσκεται το σπίτι που γεννήθηκε ο Νικόλας Γύζης. Για μπά-

νιο, οι Κολυμπήθρες με την πεντακάθαρη άμμο και τα διάφανα νερά είναι ιδανική

λύση, αν δεν φυσάει βοριάς. Η Παχιά Άμμος είναι ακριβώς αυτό που λέει το όνομά

της! Η Λειβάδα, με τα μεγάλα βότσαλα, αποζημιώνει τον κολυμβητή για τον χωμα-

τόδρομο που θα διανύσει με το αυτοκίνητό του ώσπου να φτάσει, αρκεί (όπως και

στην περίπτωση της Κολυμπήθρας) να μη φυσάει βοριάς. Σε αυτή την περίπτωση

(και είναι πολύ συνηθισμένη), τη λύση δίνουν οι (πιο προφυλαγμένες) παραλίες που

κοιτάζουν προς την πλευρά της Σύρου. Γύρω από τη Χώρα, για μπάνιο ενδείκνυνται

τα Κιόνια, ο Άγιος Ρωμανός, ο Άγιος Φωκάς και ο Άγιος Σώστης.

ίφίΓενεία εν αυΛίδί - ευρίπίδησ (εώσ 18 σεπΤεμβρίου)

Μία από τις ωραιότερες δημιουργίες του Ευριπίδη, αφηγείται την τραγική ιστο-

Within modern art history context, Techni Group (Art Group or Omadha

Techni in Greek) is a synonym for the birth of Modernism in Greece. Emi-

nent artists such as painters nicolas lytras, Pericles byzantios, Odysseas fokas,

Constantinos Parthenis, Constantinos Maleas and sculptor Michael Tompros

were members of this group. formed in the early 1900s, Techni Group was

personally supported by Eleftherios Venizelos, then prime minister of Greece,

who provided by law the possibility to organize art exhibitions with the aim

to promote local artists and the country abroad. This anniversary exhibition

organized by the Greek national Gallery aims to reintroduce the three major

sing one of the most important pieces of world literature to the Athenian
