Dear readers,

It was a pleasure to join East Asia College in July this year. As soon as I stepped off the plane from

California, I couldn’t help asking, “What have I gotten myself into?” In such a short time, I have

managed to meet so many wonderful people and to participate in so many engaging activities at the

College. EAC is only in its fourth year of existence, yet it feels as vibrant and lively as a college that has

existed for decades.

Living in EAC has brought back many memories. As an undergraduate at Princeton University, I was

one of the first students to live in a newly created residential college -- Butler College. It was exciting to

be part of new college, and I still cherish many dear friends from my Butler College days!

I wanted to thank Master Professor Iu for setting a scholarly yet warm and friendly tone in EAC. I have

enjoyed participating in the Justice workshops that Professor Iu hosts on Friday evenings. It is so

interesting for me to hear how students outside the U.S. think about deep ethical and moral problems.

And I was very pleased to listen to Philosophy Professor Hans Sluga talk about friendship at a recent

Master’s Tea.

The other members of the EAC staff have been working very hard to ensure the success of the College. I

had the pleasure of assisting Associate Master Andy Ip on the student leadership program in early

September. I was so impressed by the commitment of the many RTs and RSs that I met at that time. They

have been doing such great work on their floors to make all our college students feel safe and at home in

EAC.

I am grateful for the intelligence and dedication of our RFs, Dr. Sancia Wan and Dr. Kevin Huang. And

I wanted to offer a very special thank you to all the members of the House Association, especially

President Harry Chen. I learned so much by meeting people and sharing ideas at college events organized

by the HA: the bike trip in Zhuhai, the Brazilian seminar and BBQ, the Gulbenkian Orchestra concert,

the Mid-Autumn Carnival, the Halloween party, to name only a few.

Finally, I wanted to thank Dominique Jiang and Rebecca Xue, EAC representatives to the Inter-College

Council (ICC). They have been working hard to find ways to get EAC involved with the three other

colleges. The ICC basketball tournament was great fun, and our team played superbly, displaying excellent

team spirit and sportsmanship. We look forward to EAC participation in more ICC events, especially as

additional RCs are established at the University of Macau in 2014-15.

What Does Friendship Mean?

On 22nd October, we had such a great honor to have Professor Hans Sluga, the William and Trudy Ausfahl Professor of

Philosophy at the University of California-Berkeley, joined the Master’s Tea of East Asia College, and discussed with us

the philosophical but very practical topic of “What does friendship mean?”. During the Master’s Tea, a variety of

inquiries about friendship were raised, shaping a profound friendship-seeking journey for all the participants.

Professor Sluga received his B. Phil

before joining the faculty at the University of California in

1970. Professor Sluga has signicant contribution to

continental philosophy. Professor Sluga's most recent

interest in Chinese philosophy led to his co-teaching the

undergraduate course "Friendship, Family, and Love in

Chinese and Western 7inking", spring 2013. 7e course

focused on conceptions of friendship as well as related

notions including family and love in Chinese and Western

philosophy and literature. His interest is both in the

question how friendship is understood and practiced, and in

the question of the special moral considerations to which it

gives rise.

Professor Sluga’s aroused enthusiasm about Chinese

philosophy has brought him all the way from California to

China, well over 10,000 kilometers in distance, trying to

discover the unrevealed wisdom hidden among every

Chinese, and intriguingly. 7is very rst station of the

journey to Macau, was exactly the same starting point as

Matteo Ricci, an Italian Jesuit priest, did four hundred years

ago.

At the beginning of the sharing, Professor Sluga gave a brief

review on the history of the friendship development

between China and western countries. Matteo Ricci arrived

at Macau in August 1582 and began to learn Chinese

language and customs. At that time, Macau was the only

Portuguese trading post in the South China Sea. On the

premise of his mastery of the Chinese culture, one of his

most renowned books, On Friendship was introduced to the

public and remembered by people since then. 7is

extraordinarily in?uential treatise by Ricci greatly facilitated

the integration between the western belief of Christianism

and the traditional Chinese way of thinking, by provoking

the discussion about friendship among the Chinese scholars.

By o%ering the instance of Ricci’s missionary journey to

China, Professor Sluga reemphasized that, rather than

within the recent decades the friendship between the East

and the West has been established, it has already existed

indeed hundreds of years ago when the Emperor showed his

hospitality by giving this totally foreign visitor free access to

the forbidden city. Such privileged treatment received by

Ricci also implies the signicance of his contribution to the

comparative study of friendship between the oriental and

western cultures.

After Ricci’s story, we talked about whether there exist

di%erent types of friendship. To some extent, not only can

friendship be interpreted disparately in terms of geography,

如: acquaintance、buddy、bro、dude。

but it can also be practiced by taking depth and breadth into

account. Professor Sluga elaborated that, according to this

way of thinking, friends can be roughly divided into two

categories: intimate and occasional friends. Intimate

friends, as comprehended literally, can be those with whom

you would hang out frequently, more likely have emotional

connections, and share insights about things happening in

the surrounding environment and issues occurring around

the world. Occasional friends can be interpreted as “hi bye

friends” and at most those with whom you would have

short conversations.

Dr. Wessling, Associate Master of East Asia College, pointed

out that, in the US, the interpretation of friendship tends to

vary tremendously from the other part of the world. More

speci)cally speaking, in their own particular culture, the

usage of “friend” in daily life can be vague from time to

time. For instance, a girl you just met in the party and a

neighbor you knew since childhood can be called with the

exact same word: “friend”! So, in order to avoid confusion,

people use di.erent terms to call another person they know

but with varied levels of closeness, such as acquaintance,

buddy, bro and dude.

No matter how we are trying to eliminate the cloudy

boundaries of the classi)cation of “friends”, this simple fact

indicates the importance of friendship to us. 0erefore,

Professor Sluga continued to point out an interesting

argument that some people may be convinced that

friendship in a way can be dangerous to us for not violating

the rule of equality during friends-choosing is de)nitely

harder than just saying it. Furthermore, letting an

overwhelming proportion of friendship gets involved in

your life might undermine other social relationships of

yours.

Yu Lingxiao, one of the student participants, also partially

advocated this augment and shared that one should not get

himself or herself too occupied with friendship that it would

exert hazardous e%ect on other relationships. Yu illustrated

his point by taking the example that people might need to

break away from their parents or spouses in order to take on

some political relationships.

Speaking of inequality, when it comes to the relationship of

couple, the traditional perception is that the husband seems

to have a superior social status than the wife does. Luckily,

in modern society, as people tend to be free from the

constraint of degenerate thoughts or customs. 7e concept

of couple relationship has generally evolved into a kind

similar to friendship, which, in return, enhances the equality

among the couple. All in all, friendship can be regarded more

appropriately as somewhat like nuclear resource: make good

use of it, benet keeps ?owing. If used wrongly, it may hit

your back hardly.

Later on, considering the intricacy about the deep inside

reason why we want to make new friends in a new

environment, Professor Iu Vai Pan, our College Master,

could not help himself to ask the participants this question.

Another student Shen Qiaochu, standing on a upper

viewpoint, proclaimed that we human, as a social animal,

have our own eager to seek belongings in a group of the

same kind. Professor Sluga, on the other hand, interpreted it

in a more thought-provoking way. Using the movie “e Lady

Vanishes” as an illustration, he told us the story about the

ladies in the movie who lived in the Nazi period. 7ese ladies

had nothing in common but were all riding in the same

train, and later found themselves become good friends on

the long journey. 7erefore, Professor Sluga explained that

“it was just the situation that created the conditions that

made those people in that environment become friends.”

At the end of the sharing, Professor Sluga raised a

fascinating philosophical question: “Can human beings and

animals or pets become friends?” What do you think?

Inter-College Basketball Tournament

Mr. Tom Kao

Bruce

Jasmine

Sancia

Brazil @ EAC: Getting To Know Brazil Through FIFA World

Cup

Harry
